In 1995 the college I was going to at the time got a visit..from the makers of a Virtual Reality game machine.  It was a 'simple' one with just gloves and a helmet, and the games were very simple (but very realistic).  When you fell in the game, you got the sensation of falling, but for the most part only sight and sound were affected.  Keep in mind this was 15 years ago (almost 16 years ago now).

I can tell you by experience that these games were more realistic then even the current games we have.  However, I am assuming the cost to build such machines was the major factor as to why they never quite went mass production.  Virtual Reality has been around for at least 16 years, most likely they are waiting until the parts needed cost much less.

As for full immersion in VR..I am sort of with 'Batman' with that.  "If you can put such things in a person's brain..what else can you put in..or take out." (paraphrasing of course)

Edit : Hehe, guess I should sort of describe the rest, as the helmet and gloves were not ALL of the machine, just the part that people wore.

The rest of the machine was something I can only describe as 'arena' like.  A metal circle, with a special floor (looked kind of like a metal checkerboard).  One person stood on one side, and another stood on the other.  The games that were demonstrated were 'head to head' type games.  There was tennis (of course), jousting (that one was fun to watch lol), and a sort of futuristic/prehistoric (this one is gonna be fun to explain) First person shooter.

The last game was a sort of hide and seek thing, that was set in the 'future' (the weapons fired 'lasers') and had a lot of stairs and such (many places to hide).  The prehistoric part was there was a random Pterodactyl that could come along, grab a player, and drop them from a great height (if the game was going to long lol).  This is how I know that you could feel as if you were falling .  I won (7-5 kills) but it would have been 7-4 if not for that blasted flying chicken.

Increased appeal to the senses: full visual immersion; continually better graphics. Video games will become increasingly more popular for older audiences. Basic interactive pornography will replace passive pornography. Voice acting will continue to be mediocre. The concept of a "dungeon master" will take on a new meaning as a paid staff person can schedule games that thousands can participate in for a small one-time or monthly fee. A hand-held controller will continue to be popular over physically moving your arms and/or legs.

I think that video games will be greatly enhanced by the further development of virtual reality, which is an avenue of technology that has both great potential and some hidden danger in it. Many hope the game is based on Flash Gemcraft: Labyrinth, comes with 169 levels and replay ridiculous. Author calls for a few dollars for a number of advanced features, but even the free version will provide weeks of entertainment.
