Will the Republicans balance the federal budget

First off the republicans are only in control of the house so in their defence they cannont balance the budget right now.

But even if they had control of all branches of the federal government they would not balence the budget. For all their talk they have not balenced the budget since Herbert Hoover's day. They have failed many times and will fail many times agian.

On the other hand balencing the budget might increase unemployment so...maybe it's for the best.

No, as you point out it is impossible for them to balance the budget since they control only the House of Representatives. In 2 years they will control the Senate and White House as well, then they can be more effective in undoing what Marxists have done to the US.

For the time being however, they will be able to stop Obama's tyranical health care "reform" bill by refusing to fund enforcement of the bill effectively killing much of it. They requested that Obama fast tract the court case about the health care bill to the Supreme Court. He refuses because he would certainly lose the case there. Instead he is going to drag out the battle over the next couple of years hoping a conservative court justice dies so he could appoint a Marxist in his place.

The Tea Part will, I think, keep pressure on the Republicans and Blue Dog Democrats to do what they can to bring the government in check.

Obama opposed mandatory health insurance during the presidential campaign then did an about face when he was elected. He should return to his original position on the issue and join with the Republicans, who have a mandate from the voters, and call for a repeal of the unconstitutional law.

Oh, here is indication that the Republicans are going to try to cut the deficit.

Clicky

Quote:
The first order of business for the new House majority was passage of a new set of rules to govern the chamber. In a nod to GOP freshmen with ties to the conservative Tea Party, all new legislation will be required to include a "Constitutional Authority Statement," specifying which section of the Constitution allows for passage of the bill.

The Constitution will be read aloud on the House floor on Thursday.

The Republican majority also will require any spending increase to be offset by a spending cut of a similar size. New spending will not be allowed to be funded by tax increases.

Every bill will have to posted online for 72 hours before a final vote.

Also in the GOP's crosshairs is Obama's health care overhaul, widely considered to be the president's signature domestic accomplishment.

Republicans unveiled legislation to repeal the measure Monday night. They plan a key procedural vote on Friday and a final vote the following Wednesday, according to House GOP sources.

Democrats are dismissing the plan as little more than a hollow nod to the GOP's conservative base. Most political analysts say that while a repeal of the measure can pass the new Republican House, it has no chance of surviving the Democratic-controlled Senate or overcoming a presidential veto.

Eisenhower had a mandate.

Reagan *ugh* had a mandate.

These clowns have no mandate.  They gummed up congress and screamed about fiscal sensibility when they were the ones primarily responsible for the size of the deficit.

They have no answers as they refuse to touch their sacred cows of military spending, national defense, and tax cuts for the plutocrats.

Christ, former president Bush sent us to war and still cut our taxes even more!?  There is no sanity to that.  And you are a defender of these jagoffs!?

Go ahead.  Go ahead and parrot Glen Beck when he says he isn't a republican, but a conservative libertarian.  That's what you are...right?

Bullsnow.

Actually, all revenue bills originate in the House, so the House plays a bigger role in balancing the budget than the Senate (or even the president) does.

But to answer the question: no, I don't believe they will, and it doesn't matter how much of the government they control.  Not until the way that bills are written and vetoed is reformed will the budget be brought under control.

As long as both parties keep doing the "back-scratching routine"

Typical Washington luncheon = "If you will agree to this, I will agree to that. Good!, but if we want Tom, Dick and Harry on board; we will both have to go along with their Bacon, lettuce and tomato". "That's true and we can't forget we still owe Moe, Larry and Curly". "What's the Bill for?"

<IMO> only higher taxes and dumb luck "might" balance the budget.

Entertaining to see the champions of the far left and far right in the same thread.

As to the thread, they will not.  Just like the Dems failed to.  Spending isn't going down anytime soon and the more the government gets in our lives, the more we are going to pay for it.

They have consistently balanced the budget for the past 50 years so I don't see why they wouldn't start doing it now also.

I don't know much about the american political system and I am not sure where to find information about it either (apart from what the random wiki search might give me).

How is it now and what should be changed under such a reform, and what would make it better?

Quick example.

Let's say you want to pass a bill that changes the voting age to 18.  This bill is pretty short, coming in at about 200 pages, and the bill costs, say, $500 million dollars to properly fund.

There are upwards of 500 members of the US House of Representatives.  For a bill to pass, a majority have to agree to it.  Now let's focus in on Bob Smith, congressman from the great state of Mossossoppo.  Bob Smith is in favor of the bill, but he knows that votes are valuable things.  He's a member of the Republicrat party, and his party really needs his vote.  So the head of the party comes to him and says, "Hey Bob, we need your vote. Can we count on you?"

Bob smiles and says, "Sure thing.  But you see, Mossossoppo has a real lizard problem.  We could sure use some help with that."

And the party leader promises that, if Bob votes for the bill, they'll include a $50,000 add on that will send money to Mossossoppo to help rid the state of lizards.  Deal!  Bob votes for the bill.

Repeat for every other congressman, not to mention all the senators, and now you'll see why what started out as a $500,000 voters rights bill turned into a 3 million dollar bill that includes everything from lizard elimination to toothbrush research.  When the president gets the bill on his desk, he can't just accept the parts he likes.  He has to take the whole thing or leave it. And since voters rights was a huge part of his election campaign, he signs it into law even though he doesn't give a crap about anything else in the bill.

Now you know what an earmark is, more or less.  Reform that prevents earmarks from being included onto bills would be a major step.  Line-item veto would be another (i.e., where the president can exercise his veto for certain parts of a bill).  Most US governors have this power, but the US president does not.  Bill Clinton had it for a little while, but usually congress doesn't like to give the president this power, or the Supreme Court rules it unconstitutional.

Ike did not balence the budget, Nixon did not balence the budget, Reagan did not balence the budget (he went further into deficit), and Bush did not balence the budget.

House Republicans acctully had a chance to balence the budget by agreeing to repeal the Bush Tax cut towards the wealthy. Instead they reached a compromise where the Tax cuts are not rolled back and unemployment insurence is extending, thereby keeping tax cuts and increasing spending in one swoop.

Clearly neither republicans, nor democrats are intrested in balencing the budget. Frankly I am not ether.

As for republicans shinking government in general; that's just absurd. Republicans have been trying to scratch away at our civil liberties since at least the patriot act and probably eariler. Clearly republicans don't care about our freedom ether.

Actually its more like they don't want the government to do all this random sh*t for people when they can do it themselves. Course they are kinda failing at that too, but who knows what the years to come will bring. These are tumultuous times.
