Kane looked down, thinking. Did the past matter? It had gotten him this far and only ruined him until now. He wasn't sure. Realizing he was looking down, saying nothing, he quickly shook his head. "Alright." he said. "Tell me about my childhood."

Melony took a deep breath. {i]steady, girl, steady... Take your time.
She sat there for a minute, collecting her thoughts and eliminating the things that he didn't need to hear. -They'll only get in the way of what we have going here, anyway.- "Alright. First off, you weren't the happiest kid around. There were many reasons for that, the main two being that your foster parents were abusive and no one seemed to understand or care all that much. You never really got along with the kids of your age group, them picking on you constantly and all, so the majority of your friends were younger than you." She smiled a little sadly, "Even though it got you into trouble with the 'Big' kids, you hung out with little old people like me. Ha, you know what? I don't think that you really cared about what they called you, you were either having too much fun with us, too drugged up to care or both almost all the time."
"Our friends used to walk with us on the river... do you remember it? Crystal clear, all year round. In the spring, it was cool and soothing, overflowing the small banks around it and covering the tree roots." She sighed a little, "I wish I could go back there someday, just laying down to hear the birds sing. Maybe spot a deer or raccoon somewhere along the banks... But enough daydreaming. Back then, you wore black, had the whole cute emo-haircut thing going on, back when it was just becoming popular. Middle school kids would mercilessly tease you for that as well..."
"On the day that I visited the middle school, I think that I was ten at the time, I saw this happening to you and, little old ten year, sixty-four pound me marched up to them and told them to back off. They said, 'Look, it's your girlfriend, Jack" and, 'hey Jack, you need little girls to fight for you'. You took it until they pulled on my hair. One of them had a bloody nose before he knew what hit him, and the other two crawled away. you got sent to the principal's for that one, I think. I do know that you were suspended for a month though. Go figure, one of the few good things that you did, and you get punished for it."
Melony realized what she had said. "Not that you didn't do good things at all! Far from it, during the four months that we knew each other, I could see that you where trying to be good! Everything that we did you were helpful and supportive, defending us from the older kids. You fit in the group perfectly, little outcasts that we were. Cindy was too fat, Jake was too tall, Max had glasses and I was just a little too smart. We still had room for the overly-violent one in our group and the druggy... And, well, you were both." She was silent for a while.
"You always seemed to get along with me the best, since I was really the only one who could keep up with you when we did go to the river. At least, that's what you always told me. I guess that it still wasn't 'Cool' to have a girl in your life for you, yet. Not even if you did care for me... You kept every promise that you made, no matter how dangerous or stupid... Around me, you always were smiling..." She looked down at her appetizer plate. "You know... I have always thought that I was one of the few good influences on your life back then, but now I think that I just made it worse. You see, we used to walk home together and, at first I heard your parents yelling at you without you saying anything back. After three months, you started to go ballistic on them when they did yell at you. I could hear you through the door... That was the night that you blew up their house." For a long time, now she was silent. Staring at her glass of cola.
But she wasn't done yet. "You know, Jack... I actually wasn't too disturbed by that. we had talked enough about them and your home that you had convinced me that they would deserve something like that. It's what you did after that..." Melony bit her finger hard enough to make white indents. "You had run away from home and been missing for two days. In a daze, I walked down the old river. The sun was out, a cool air blew through the forest, and you were laying on your back in the water, barely conscious from your latest overdose."
"I brought you home, Jack. I didn't call the hospital because I knew that they would tell the police and arrest you, so I brought you to the basement. You started to hallucinate and were attacked by something and I..." Kane could see that she was silently crying, she slowly forced herself to stop and continued, skipping part of the story. "... You called the hospital. Before anything else happened, you realized what you had done and called for help. Before I lost consciousness, I could see your self loathing and disgust in your eyes... That same look that you have right now. As if, you never wanted to do anything wrong... Then you disappeared."
"But do you know what?" Melony looked up and gave him a sad smile. "I can see that you have changed. the hardened killer that you were wouldn't have even blinked at the story I was telling. And so I can say that I trust you... Maybe now I have a better reason then I did back then."
You never told me this... Miasma was actually shocked. How could you possibly trust him after...?

Moving around impatiently through the room, I waited as the machine seemed to see something up. Finally my inner clock told me that long enough time had gone to ask the machine what was wrong.
"Having problems?" I asked half-mockingly.
"Yes master, having problem figuring out where to start. What kind of information does the master wish? If you want me to sprout random things about the superheroes and supervillains, then we will be here tomorrow evening as well." The old man asked me and I sighed
"Okay, just tell me things about the catalyst and events surrounding it. Give me information that could help me understand what it is, maybe how it looks like, and what might have happened to it. Is that easier to wrap your little head around?" I raised an eyebrow.
"We'll see master..." The machine stated.

Kane didn't even look up at the boy, his eyes suddenly went blank. He see more of his past, it had started with petty crimes and from there only escalated. He had started being a killer for hire, staging big-scale robberies, being a master-thief and even at occasions a small-time terrorist. He saw everything in flashes, his teenage-years coming back to him bit by bit, piece by piece. What should have been his glory years was memories that would torment him. Somehow he had still heard what the boy had said, but he still didn't look up at him. He reached forward and took Melonys hand in his.
"I cannot say sorry for what I put you through, it would not be enough." he shook his head slowly, clearing his mind. "I am glad I am not the same person I used to be. A new start is what I needed, and I can tell you that I am no longer the boy lost in the woods. I am to put right what I have done wrong, I will somehow do good in this world."
He turned to the boy, angry. "And whoever is controlling this boy, you should learn some manners. Interrupting a conversation like this! You could at least wait until we were finished." Kane rose and turned to Melony. "I am sorry, but I cannot let whoever is doing this kill the boy. I won't have even more blood on my hands than I already have. Alright, boy, lead the way."

He made sure his hidden knives were well in place strapped just beneath his wrists and then followed the boy outside.

In the alleyway stood two figures. One was massive and was hunched over, still towering over the others even then. The other was silvery blonde haired man of a medium build wearing sunglasses. The man in the sunglasses held out his hand and said, "A pleasure to meet you, Kane. The word on the street was that you have returned. Lucky that you have come to where one of my conveniently placed thralls are. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Felix Erling. That big fellow beside me doesn't have a name, so I just call him Minion. It is fitting, yes?"

Kane clenched his jaw. Damn he thought. "I know nothing of Archon except the name. Why would I accept the job offer if it could be of such a great risk to me, when I have just recently stepped back into the world of living men. I would hate disappearing once again." he smiled slightly. "And of course I would never accept the job without knowing the reason you need him gone. No wait..." Kane shook his head. "The less I know the better, I figure. Tell me of Archons powers and how he was beaten last time."

"Well he is a two-sided coin here. Normally, he is just like anybody else. However, whenever he wills it, he becomes bigger and stronger and also gains the ability to manipulate electricity. Normally I would hire a typical hitman to take him out whenever he is in his normal form. Unfortunately, I do not know what he looks like normally. I need someone that will be able to take him out in either form. That someone being you. Last time he was confronted by a large party of supers, and only managed to beat him when someone else joined the fray. I suggest you be slightly smarter about fighting him than they were."
