[WIP] Church Town

This town replaces Stronghold, It is a kind of alternate branch of the Haven army, a renegade army, they are might oriented but should play very different from orcs, it's more like dwarfs actually, the more time you get to prepare yourself, the better it is.

Their racial skill is Spirituality. The creatures gains spirituality points when they cast spells, when the hero uses Prayers (War cries) and when they defend. they lose spirituality points when they are targeted by enemy spells or suffer from some negative effects.

Spirituality points make your creatures better protected against destructive and dark spells and more receptive to light spells, they also give better spells and new abilities. spirituality points do not absorb damage.

here are a few creatures (the model of the level 3 creatures come from Psatkha, I also think of using one of his creatures for Tier 1)

Tiers 1 (Creature by psatkha) :

Tiers 2 :

Tier 3, Priestesses :

Tier 4, Glories :

Tier 5, Crusaders :

Tier 6, Church Guardians :

Naming ideas:
3:
Sister > Seer/Priestess
4:
Glory > Blazing Glory/Searing Glory
5:
Zealot > Crusader/Protector
6:
Stone Guardian > Blessed Guardian/Obsidian Guardian

This seems like a potential good idea, I really like the look of these units too (though the crusader ones, with the exception of the last, might need some work).

I would like it to be NCF though, but that might be to ask for too much, as making a whole new faction is beyond complicated.

I already named most of them, but for some of them, didn't have much inspiration, so I might use some of those name (but not zealot, it is the name of a Haven unit)

I already improved the aspect of the golden crusader, since I released it as a NCF

the last glory is also available as a NCF

making a new faction isn't that hard when you know what to do, though, I have a lot of time to work on it.

Point taken about the Zealot, forgot about him there.

Crusader > Redeemer(offensive)/Protector (defensive)?

As for earlier units, maybe a religious mob as tier 1?

Rabble > Fanatic/Faithful

Rabble are basically more offensive peasants- somewhat high offensive stats, but low defensive.
Fanatics are further improved and cannot be mind controlled.
Faithful have excellent morale and improved defensive stats.

Hmm technically the catapult is a trebuchet, so I would go with that name instead to avoid confusion, and it sounds better.

lizardwarrior : yes, that's the idea.

I slightly reworked the crusaders, the 2 first ones have better skin color (though, for some reasons, I can't make it as good as on the 2nd upgrade )
I added a crossguard to the sword, and some details to the 1st upgrade.

Here is an unfinished version for download. maybe I can get some feedbacks. tiers 1 aren't finished, but are playable.

download

put all the zip files inside the church file in your UserMods directory

so here are the tiers 1

some replays with the faction :

here
for some reason, I haven't managed to win with the spirituality based hero. either she is weak or I don't know how to play her

I put a bit more work into icons :

no feedbacks?

I really like this mod, the units are cool and different enough from Haven, and are rather balanced too I guess. I especially like how you turned the Blood Rage into a  "Religious Wrath"-kinda theme, it really fits.

Really waiting for you to continue your work on this mod. On the city (recolored Haven perhaps?), minor tweaks on Warcries(prayers?) and perhaps minor tweaking on the creatures as well.

Some minor notes:

The two Pikemen upgrades are different enough, but since the unupgraded is called Pikeman, and upgrade A as well, maybe the upgrade A should be Veteran Pikeman or something, and B Elite Guard as it is now? Just so you know what you are going to fight if they are as a neutral stack in the map. Their stats aren't that different either, but I guess its fine.

One thing that I think might be a balance issue:

All factions in the game have 4 small units and 3 large units in their army ranks as default. This army only has two large creatures. I am not sure does it really break the balance, but its a thing to consider.

Changing any of the current tier 1-5 creatures into a large creature won't really work, since they are all human-sized humanoids, not large beasts or war machines like the two last units. Maybe you'll think about changing one unit in the line-up (Personally I'd go with the Glories, they are nice and all but somehow stand out too much from the other troops) and replace it with a large unit? The town is missing a cavarly unit, so could a Cavalier-Paladin-Champion recolor do the job as tier, say, 5, if you lower Crusaders to T4 and delete the Glories (for example). They'd be a bit weaker than the Haven counterparts since the lower tier, but still something.

In a nutshell, a really nice mod, just needs a few creature renames, re-sizes, replacements and small tweakings.

Good luck on your work in the future.

I don't know

there are already archers, and having cavalry too would make it maybe a bit too similar to haven. and glories actually have some crucial abilities. they form a combo of holy creatures with crusaders and priestesses.

and it's not exactly religious wrath, actually, it mostly improves the magic aspect of units. it gives very little might bonus

Yes you are right, the charging pikemen and anti-charge pikemen are really different from each other, my point is invalid

And yeah, having cavarly would make it almost an unit-to-unit copy of Haven, and it might be boring. The Glories abilites are really nice anyway, boosting own archers to be faster, allowing the slow Trebuchet to shoot enemy shooters before they shoot you etc, or giving mana for the priests and crusaders and making the enemy magic heroes useless.

The "Religious Wrath"-comment was just a personal opinion about the troops themselves. I just got that feeling from the units, smiting heretics, disbelievers and fighting fiercely for their own beliefs

war trebuchet can make a very nasty first shot. though, not sure if it worse than getting fried by crystal dragons or a dungeon meteor shower... in another hand, block them and they become useless. if you can't defend them properly, that's a risk to pick them.

FEEDBACK
Okay here's a ton of feedback, some might be a bit “ridiculous” but never mind, I hope you appreciate it.

Critics (bugs, praises and things which should be fixed)
* I don't think they should lose their spirituality when a friendly units stack dies, that kinda ruins it for me(at least early game). But I don't know.
* Dash and Scatter shot is missing icons in the spellbook.(some other abilities as well)
* Half of all the buildings in this Church faction have French names.
* The “Prayer” icon could use some more work.
* The ”prefix” for Spirituality and Prayer is in the wrong order. It should be Advanced Prayer, not Prayer advanced.
* I don't think a Trebuchet should have cowardice, neither should it have Double shot in my opinion. I mean I like the fact that it's a powerful shooter but it just doesn't fit seeing how war machines takes long time to load.(but on the other hand ballista have that same ability, so I don't know.). I also think that Reinforced Tebuchet are a lot weaker then The War Trebuchet, but I haven't tested fully. (Double shot AND fear...)
* The Church Guardian and his upgrades are having a hole in the mouths.
* It doesn't say what the Trebuchet's first “blood rage” bonus is.
* I think you should change the Blazing Glory's icon, it's very irritating, since it doesn't have the color  that the player is having.
* The Renegade heroes are a lot slower then the others on the adventure map.
* huh I can learn a 6 sixth Skill besides Spirituality? (or is this a bug from something else? (I learned it from a Witch hut...))

Questions
* Do they have a faction artifact set? Or is it that same as Stronghold has?
* Is the Radiant Glory's Siphon Mana stronger then the imps? If so how much stronger?
* What it Elemental overkill? What does Heavenly Shield do?

Ideas
* Something that I think would be really cool, would be if you could remove the idle animation for the Church Guardian, making completely still like a statue.
* You could also give the Church Guardian some more abilities, not that you have to but if you could come up with something cool it would be great.
* I don't think you should have BOTH of the Crusaders as Casters. the reason for this is that if you use Siphon Mana with your Glories then they will transfer mana to both the priests AND to the Crusaders.(The mana will be divided) Which you presumable don't want since the priests are a lot better as casters. So you are going for a build that is based on stealing mana and spamming spells with your priests you should be able to choose a Crusader which doesn't use mana. At least that's what I think.
* Concerning the Skill Training, couldn't you add some more perks or something to thing skill? You couldn't you also increase the bonus it gives either by increasing the retaliation bonus or just add something more. (but if it can't be don't without disturbing Haven's Training then nvm.)
  - Maybe you should replace refined mana in Shatter Dark with Corrupted Soil and then move refined mana to training.

I really like this faction, A LOT. It's like a combination between Haven, Academy and Stronghold. It allows you to be defensive and relay on your heavy ranged units like the Renegade Archer and Trebuchet. The Spirituality thing is brilliant, it's really cool.
I like this faction because you really can be defensive and when you have the archer and trebuchet with great area of effect attack you totally force your opponent to come to you.

* There are many interesting combos:
  - Enlightment on High Priestesses for powerful Resurrection. (seriously this one is great XD)
  - Powerful blow on dashed Renegade Sharpshooters. (Very nice for early creeping )
  - Divine Guidance on your Trebuchets (but that's obvious )

Just as I was finishing a long game I thought that, hey maybe I should take some replays of this faction. So here are 2 replays of my playing the Church faction, they are very basic as I had already won, but I think they cool nonetheless.
REPLAYS

Overall I think this faction is great, and I hope you'll continue to work on, develop and polish it. The way you play it is very good, so if you could enhance that and take it to a new level it would be great.
