- The market is over for today. Merchants need rest too you know. The food will be served shortly. For now, enjoy your drinks ang get to know eachother.- Taruss said.- Thorald, if you may, don't sing. Spare our ears.
In the next morning most were preparing for the upcoming journey.
Vishan's head was buzzing like a beehive. He drank way to much ale yesterday. None the less he packed the leather armor that Vulkan made according Heila's description of the hermit's body build and some food for the journey. He was now looking for Snorbald. The elder warrior promised to accompany him over to the hermit. Vishan found him, eating the early breakfast.
- Ready to go? We must leave now if we're to return before the rest depart.- He said and drank some ale, trying to ease his hangover.

Snorbald had gotten up at first light and had streched his legs before he had sat down to breakfast. The food was simple and hearty, bread, fresh goat's milk, boiled eggs and smoked sausage.
Snorbald chuckled and tore off a bit of bread when the young warrior that would accompany him today, arrived in the longhouse of the chieftain.
"I was ready at dawn. I'm eating now. So, I'll be ready when I'm finished eating." Snorbald drank some milk.
"How far is it to this hermit? If the journey is going to take us two days, Joshua might just get out from under his challenge."
Snorbald saw the young warrior drink some stale ale left from the night before.
"To much drink last night, eh? That stale ale is not going to do any good. If you want to get rid of a hangover, you'd best run to the chickencoop and eat two raw eggs. If anything, it'll ease the rotgut." Snorbald advised the youngling before eating a boiled egg in a single bite.

"Hangover? You don't knw me very well then. I'm just having a little drink to relax myself, and this is what was left over from my first and only pitcher last night." Joshua raised the glass in a kind of mock salute to Snorbald. "You could join me, if you want to. Otherwise, I'd better go wake up my men and let them get some of the over-zealous market merchants who come out early in the morning, and then I'm going out for a light jog. Care to join me?"

My father used to drink a few dozen if someone challenged him. - He said.- Still my hangover will wear off while walking.- Vishan grabbed some sausage.- We're leaving to Prohna to get the hermit. Right after Snorbald finishes eating. And I think you should stay Joshua. Your men appear to only listen to you. Some has to keep them on a leash.

Snorbald drank the last of his milk, stuffed the remaining sausage into one of his pouches and picked up the bread.
"I'll finished the rest on the road. Let us go. But be warned. I may be older, but I keep a brisk pace." Snorbald said as he got up. He walked to the entrance of the lodge, with Vishan in tow.

Joshua felt a little confused since the old man had said his name and then suggested a cure for a hangover. What was he supposed to think?
"Don't worry, sir. I'll have my second keep them on a tight leash." He told Vishan. "He can handle them, and has done so in the past."
With Snorbald by his side, Joshua walked out to his men. "Role call!" Instantly everyone was up and yelling out their names, almost all at once. "Good! Everyone except Trellon is here, and that girl told me where she was going last night. So, since we are packing up soon, I suggest that all of you get your fill of the market now. Have fun men!"
"Does that mean that we can get some girls, sir?" On of the mercenaries called out.
"No! We are guests here, and so we should respect the citizenry! Understood?" He yelled back. The soldier looked down at his feet and mumbled sheepishly.
Joshua gave a small sigh as he and the older warrior walked off. "Sometimes I just want to hit some of those men over the head and tell them, 'You have a brain, don't you?!' But I can't since that would obviously lower moral..." Joshua mumbled some kind of curse harshly under his breath. "Oh well, oh well. I'll get my mind off of it with some excersize, right?"

Snorbald left town with Vishan, leaving Joshua to whatever it was he was doing. The mercenary was clearly wrong in the head, ever assuming people were talking to him.

Heila left that morning going south towards a large settlement where the rest of her family waited for her. She only handed Vishan a slip of paper that detailed exactly how to reach Rhain's house. She didn't speak to them, though, and rode away quickly.

The Black Grove was a depressing place. There were no birds chirping their songs, and the trees let little light through their mighty foliage. The two made at least one third of the road.
The gemstone in Vishan's sword was faintly glowing.
- If we stick to the path we're safe. If the stone starts glowing brightly then it means we're bound to fight some fiends.- Vishan said.

"I've been meaning to ask. Are the fiends of this area that agressive or do you people taunt them? In all my years of travel I can count the trouble I had with fiends on one hand. I've even shared a yeti's cave without any incident once. There must be some reason why the fiends here attack you people so much, or there must be a reason why they avoid fights with me." Snorbald said, half thinking out loud.
"And could you step up the pace? If we're about a third there, I think we could make it by dusk if we walk in my usual pace."

- It wasn't always like this. Sure the leshii are causing some mischief from time to time, but never harming us. Mostly the werewolves attack us. Taruss thinks that the forest had become too small for them, and they're looking for new places to dwell.- Vishan said and started walking faster.- Loidha. Well, that's another story. The fiends of the marsh were always aggresive.

Snorbald shook his head. They still were walking to slow for his tastes, but Vishan clearly was not used to walking this far in such a pace.
"Sometimes I wonder if Urusshan aren't too kind for this world. Where I come from, the Wild-men fear the villages of people. And rarely take anything more viscious than stray lambs or rabbits. Werewolves are herded into wild quarantine villages, like leppers and others who endanger their clans. Though not the same villages for leppers and werewolves, obviously. But I've never come across a Loidha."

They passed through the forest without incident and made camp for the night in a field beyond. Due to their brisk pace, they were very much ahead of schedule. The next day, they came close to where Rhain lived.
Rhain just came back from his morning fishing and set them up in the drying rack after he salted them. He then grabbed his staff and climbed up a tree to his roof to meditate. He ran up to the chimney and tossed the staff straight up into the air as he ran. He did a backflip against the chimney and landed perfectly on the staff. He took a couple seconds to balance himself. He then assumed his typical pose on the staff.

- Believe me, not even a suiciding madman would dare enter the marsh of Loidha. There were few would be heroes who ventured there with a pig sticker. It was the last time anyone saw them. The fiends there are extremely violent. It may seem that we go easy on the land, but those who live nearby the Black Grove prefer the way of the sword.- Vishan said.- Each winter we best the beasts in battle. Usually it's not a big scale war, just a try to snatch a cow or few, but this winter it was different. Taruss said that something was massing them to attack. Part of the grove itself was set on fire. We heard the leshii lamenting the trees for at least several days. And then the attacks suddenly stopped.- Vishan drank some spring water, looked at the hermit's home and saw him balancing on a staff on top of the chimney.- Hey, Snorbald, look, that girl was right. He is more than a fisherman. Even the acrobats at a fair can't perform this way. Let's go talk to him.
Domerth and Taruss were sparring near the rye fields when suddenly a black bird swooped nearby and dropped a rolled up wolf's fur right near Domerth's feet. He unrolled the fur with his sword. It's gems were glowing. He then saw it. A miniature copy of himself, with a wound in the chest. The copy was about half a meter in height. Near it, a stiletto, an exact copy of his sword lied. But wait. It wasn't his sword. Instead of a wolf's head and at the end of the hilt there was a bird's, most likely an eagle's talon holding a ruby. Domerth touched the miniature body with the tip of his blade. The body dispersed and seven creatures scattered and fled. A centipede, a toad, a viper, an owl and three bats.
Taruss looked at the small blade and said:
- This will cause us trouble.
- Explain.
- Seven challenges. A dark force is behind this. However, if they think that they can scare us this way, they don't know who Domerth of Kunn and Taruss the Chanter really are!

Rhain looked down at the travelers below. It looked like one was waving at him. Rhain rolled his eyes, jumped up and kicked his staff forward into the air. He then flipped forward and and landed on the staff, which has fallen perfectly vertically onto the ground. One foot was still on the staff while the other was raised up, crooked as if on a spring. His arms were in a controlled defensive formation, and his eyes squinted and keen.
"Is there something you need?" he said.

- Aye. We bring a message from Domerth of Kunn. A girl named Heila stopped in Kunn and spoke on your behalf. She thinks that your skill can aid us in search for The Tomes of Seventy Arts. We also brought you a gift to prove our good intensions.- Vishan took out the armor. A studded leather breastplate, a pair of vambraces and a pair of greaves.

Rhain raised his eyebrows and rolled his eyes, then hopped off the staff and grabbed it. He walked over to Vishan while muttering, "Shouldn't have made that bet..."
He grabbed the armor and tested it out a little bit. Once it passed that inspection, he put it on. It fit him almost perfectly. Having adjustable lengths and straps helped greatly as well.
"Alright, come in. I'll give you some soup and tea. Make yourself comfortable while I gather my belongings." said Rhain.
He then left into the house. He quickly gathered up some dried food, clothes, a waterskin, and his father's great sword, which he strapped upon his back. Soon he went into the small living room, where Snorbald and Vishan sat.
"I am ready to go. Rest here as long as you wish. I shall start ahead." he said.
Rhain ran out of the door and grabbed his staff along the way. He soon reached the little path that led to the main road to Domerth's village.

- No use for us loitering here.- Vishan said to Snorbald. The two quickly cought up to Rhain. They all soon entered the dark woods again.
- Don't wander off the path and you're safe Rhain. That's your name right?- Vishan said.
The trio walked without much adventure, untill they stumbled upon a huge pine which fell onto the path, blocking it. The amethyst in Vishan's sword glowed brightly. He unsheathed it immediatly.
- We've got trouble. Brace yourselves.- He said, looking around and expecting an attack.

Snorbald drew his sword and took his shield off his back. He scanned the surroundings and loudly sniffed the air.
"I think Rhain is right. Large fiends do not mask their stink. I think they're Goblins or Kobolds. So there might, indeed, be snares around here."
Snorbald continued their journey with his weapons in hand.
"But we're too many and too large for a few of the little ones. But we'd still best beware."
