What made Icewind Dale so boring is that you had to create the entire party and that the story was linear. There wasn't any party members arguing with each other or having part in conversations and rarely could you choose where to go or what to do...
I see it as the 'Fallout Tactics', of the Forgotten Realms video game series. But Fallout Tactics was more fun. However I never played Icewind Dale 2. Was that any good?

IWD2 is good. But very similar like IWD was (no hireable party members, no choices where to go) but at least has a good story.

Nothing really touches baldur's gate 2 and planescape torment. However nwn 2 was very good even if its interface sucked and you could not kick out characters you didn't like. Also disappointing romance. Characters, quests, music, storyline, a sense of humour, twists, it was a lot of fun. Original nvw sucked compared to bg but it was enjoyable still and there were plenty of outstanding modules to download and enjoy. As far as expansions go hordes of the underdark(nwn) and mask of the betrayer(nwn 2) were absolutely amazing. Words cannot express how much I enjoyed them Found shadows of undrentide underwhelming and storm of Zehir a disgrace, I play these games for the storyline and this one had no plot to begin with. After a masterful storyline as the one featured in mask of the betrayer I could not possibly accept a pointless dungeon crawling game.

Yup, MotB was one of the best crpg plots so far. And yes, the NWN2 romance was horrible. I wish it wasn't there, it was a disgrace. MotB one also sucked.

There was romance in NWN2? I only screwed Elanee for the lolz, and that was it.
Man, my favorite though was in BG2 with Aerie. After sweet-talking her to death, I turned around and told her "Ewwwwwwww!!!! What are those nasty scars on your back??". Priceless! XD

Who gives a crap about romances? It's not like they add anything real to the game anyways. *shrugs*

Character interactions and all that, is all the rage to me in such games. So romances count too. I mean fighting with monsters? Levelling up and growing more powerful? That's good and all, but you do it in every other game as well. But the characters in both BG and NWN series, now that's something to remember these games by.
Anyway, here's some quality romance according to me, from NWN2.
Baalbisan: But it looks so female. How can I be certain?
Player: I suppose I could show you. Stand back - I'll need a lot of room.
Qara: ...
Baalbisan: It offers to reveal its parts, but my vision is not what it was. I doubt I could make out something so diminutive.
Neeshka: Well, from what I have heard, it is not that small at all.
Elanee: What did you say?
Neeshka: [quietly] Hey, I don't know, I'm just trying to help.
For those who don't know, Qara, Neeshka and Elanee are three of the player's companions. Baalbisan is a Balor Demon who hates females.
That's some quality romance here! XD

Man, that looks good and all but now what wouldn't I give to have an official BG remake made by Bioware or some other. 3.5e ruleset ofcourse or at least the AD&D 2e one. None of this 4e crap. Damn, to think that because of the new edition, there will never be another good game based on Forgotten Realms like BG and NWN before...

IWD2 is MILES better than IWD1, which is reallly boring an just a game you want to play only once. IWD2 actually is very replayable because there are VERY little restrictions in party restrictions (like NONE: Say hello to Dwarven Sorcerors and Elven Barbarians ) and there are many minor sidequests that you'll miss the first times playing.

IWD2 is unplayable on Windows7 though. IIRC there's no patch or fix either.

@OD
Thanks for the suggestions.
I have played both IWD and IWD2. The first one I never finished. The second one I thought was much better and I did play it to completion. Still I didn't think it was as good as BG1/2.
Never played ToEE or Planescape.
Also played Pool of Radiance II, but that was just horrible.
What I should do is dig out my old gold box games and see if I can get them to run on W7.

Well, as of right now, you can get Neverwinter Nights 2 Platinum Edition (full game + 2 expansions) 50% off on Steam for $9.99.
At that price, you can't go wrong.
To elaborate more on Planescape, it is a masterpiece. The plot, characters, setting, combat, action... it all works. There are very few games that can match the quality of Planescape: Torment. In my book, even though a different genre, it's up there with the likes of Half-Life 2, System Shock 2, and Heroes of Might & Magic 2.
...I guess I like a lot of sequals.

MotB sucked in a few places, mostly difficulty (too easy), length (too short) and companions (too boring, excluding the lolrainbow bear), but the story was epic as hell.

I have never played Baldur's Gate series even though I picked it up for a 10 some years back So I can't really comment on that.
I can however, comment on NwN 1 + Expansions. Rarely have I become totally absorbed by a game but in this case I did. I don't know how to put it, but I really really like to enter worlds like this be it from the
"fetch my old sword" - from the other side of the room like - quests
to
Quests that takes ages to complete.
The interface is great, unlike NwN 2 , and the fanbased community is always expanding ( Stardock-like )
I haven't played heavily in years but once in a blue moon I log on just to keep my builds alive and to help whomever is online with the odd Boss quest or the like
I would say that, investing 9.99$ in the full pack is well worth it. Even today, almost 10 years after I started to play, new content is still popping up.
I better go try BG then - Any links to must have mods ?
