Not sure I'm getting the most out of this game

Hello everyone,

let me start off by saying this: I love this game.

But I'm not sure I'm getting everything I can out of it. First of all, the campaign missions have atrocious writing and voice acting (sorry, I wish I could be nicer) so I mostly play random maps against normal ai, but I keep running into problems. I normally play Vladamir or the centaur hero.

But I never quite feel I'm getting the most out of the game. The best part is obviously the hero duels, where two armies gather and duke it out it the supreme and tactical art of combat, but that only seems to happen 3 months later followed by a flattening of every one of their 20 heroes I meet.

The problem I have with this game is that, compared to a game like say, starcraft, it seems there is no ongoing fights or battles or skirmishes. There only seems to be killing neuts followed by one epic battle and then disappointing running around capturing (and loses) cities.

Is there any way I can play with necropolis or stronghold (or, if I must, inferno or dungeon) that can see constant fights and battles etc that don't decide the entire game in one fight?

PS: is there a way to play with necropolis where your armies don't die as much? I always get decimated early...

It's mostly lack of good maps and mapping possibilities. In H3 it looks quite different and free-for-all games can be really challenging.

...or you didn't try any mods and customs maps/RMGs at all, did you?

I know what you are saying

Campaigns were one sad story. Same for single maps with AI cheating SHAMELESSLY while at the same time being utterly stupid and feeling more like a turbo-charged bot than a human. First it charges you like crazy and after you build up it just.. becomes passive. Random maps? Plain bad. Duels? Imbalanced. The only way to make the best out of the game is play multiplayer on certain custom maps I'm afraid. Once you get a taste of human creativity - given the incredible amount of options and strategies H5 can offer - you can never go back to the boring single.

Not sure what you mean by one decisive fight. Vs AI? Aggressive creeping? AI is quite easy to exploit and always loses if you know how to properly setup your hero and how to creep/build fast. But in case you have to flee you'd need some non-army aid like say a triple flaming ballista for orcs or summoning/dark  for necropolis. Necropolis has quite an easy time in earlygame with firetrap, raise dead and mark of the necromancer, all you need is a good stack of skeleton archers, one skeleton warrior(for ranged protection if you encounter shooters) and zombie fodder to cover the skelies. A mass slow/decay is pretty good to have also. I suggest enlightenment(intelligence), summoning and logistics as your first skills.

Inferno does kinda need warmachines for an easier creeping, mass slow/confusion also helps tremendously. Dungeon has the  easiest time of all with invisible stalkers and powerful destructive or using just a pack of furies to kill hordes or throngs of slow walkers like squires. Suggested to start with destructive, enlightenment and logistics as a warlock.

I tried an RMG but I didn't really like it. no mods yet either. I also don't want to do multi-player really, at least, not until h6.

Maybe is there a mod (or something of the sort) that at a certain day each week pits heroes armies against each-other automatically? Giving a some slight advantage to the winner (such as an artefact of some sort) but without utterly destroying the loser (i.e. he only loses 10% of his army rather than 100%), so that they can fight again next week? That way there's constant action, but the game isn't decided from one battle

That's all I really want tbh, just fair hero duels every once and a while rather than 3 months of turtling followed by "I killed your main dude, haha you lose".

Killing neutrals...thats the action I think.
Also the multiplayer in this game is not extremely slow...I recommend it.

You can use custom templates to define map settings for the RMG. It provides a nice change of pace.

Check this thread: http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=24002&pagenumber=1

I've been using a template that allows for every factions to be present and to be linked by a bigger central zone with loot and big stacks of neutrals.
