Whilst I'm against the Town-Window, I certainly wouldn't call it the essence of the game, for me the essence of the game consists of three things:
The chess-like turn based tactical battles.
The development or your army and heroes and their unique abilities that form part of those battles.
The atmosphere of the game.

I see the Town Screen "merely" as a tool used to deliver that atmosphere, but the units, heroes, adventure map, musical score and emphasis on myth and fantasy for most of the gameplay elements are also powerful methods of delivering it.

Hence I declare myself:
Leaning in favour of full-screen town-screens.
But I'd be lying if I said it is going to seriously effect my opinion of this newest title in the series.

Well, the poll is actually up to 83% now!

I think it's also important to remember what those who are not so into the games believe. I think most of us have voiced our opinions pretty clear in this thread so far. But one important thing that has been mentioned, and should not be forgotten, is the memorabilia of the town screens. As mentioned several times in this thread one of the most (and perhaps the most) memorable things from H3 (and perhaps H5) are the town screens. And when I talk about the game with people that are fans of the series, but perhaps not to the extent as many in this place, it's fascinating to see what they are interested about. What most often catches their attention is that the screens now are only windowed, not full screen, and that the buildings are not clickable.

It's such a small part of the game, and takes little time to accomplish, but plays such an important role for so many. Please, don't take away our town screens!

Sorry but I can't be very specific as to what is happening at the moment, beyond assuring you that you aren't wasting your time. We're on the same side here

Amen, brother. I keep all my fingers crossed that your hopes materialize.

If you ask me, the community* has spoken its opinion loud enough, I think that the summary of Darklord hit the nail on the head.
It is now the turn of Ubihole to deliver and officially let us know that they (at least) are working on redesigning the town screens.

*...well, to be accurate, the community save for War-overlord and 50% of MrDragon (both of whom, for some obscure reason, believe that posting once for each other post on this thread will make their opinion more valid or something)

EDIT @Warlord: Exactly, it cannot.

I think an opinion can't be valid, but imo if you have logical arguments and legit reasons then some opinions can be better.

Yes I agree this needs to be put back. Besides now it's not even 3D all the more the reason to put it back. It's flat and you can barely see it.

You just proved the opposite of your point by saying

"for me the essence of the game consists of three things:
The chess-like turn based tactical battles.
The development or your army and heroes and their unique abilities that form part of those battles.
The atmosphere of the game."

The town screen is apart of the section you state called "atmosphere." How is it that you're unable to make the connection?

Wrong, he is just saying that the atmoshpere is made up of many things, not just the town screen. Basically, he will play the game even if there's town windows!

Chess-like turn based tactical battles....damn straight!

Exactly as Double is saying:
Town-Screens are not the only way to deliver the game's atmosphere, certainly a significant portion but by far the only part.
And I'm not convinced town-windows will cause it to lose all of this delivery, certainly some but I wouldn't say all.

Lets say, giving it an arbitrary number... 100.
HoMMIII's screens gave me 100 atmosphere quotient.
HoMMV's gave me 70-90 (varied from faction to faction, hit comes from the town layouts).
HoMMVI's might still provide me with 30-70 (speculatory), about half as much as the HoMMIII ones on average.

Now lets say if I were to give atmosphere quotient to the entire game, it would be something like 500 or so, so in the grand scheme of things, to me that's a minor loss, still a loss, but a minor one.
So whilst it certainly has an impact and will negatively influence my experience, other aspects of the game like the adventure map (which is now more beautiful then ever before) new detailed and enthralling amtosphere quotient might just make up for the difference.

That's me trying to express my thoughts in numbers, it doesn't help much... does it?

For me HoMM is a role playing game, it's not really about the huge level of tactics. If HoMM was a balanced tactic game then it would play more like Starcraft and less like a turn bases game where you explore 100 different scenarios filled with stupidly broken wonders.

The magic the town screens adds to the game is well worth the loading time, and if loading time is such a problem in a relaxed turn based game, then just make the town screens like in HoMM3.

A HoMM game without town screens will be like Coca Cola bottle without the same logo and color that has withstand the test of time, the Coca Cola will still taste good, but it will not be the same Coca Cola that I love.

This discussion isn't making a lot of sense... This would be like having a Mario Platformer without any water levels, stars, or castles, because its not necessary for a Mario Platformer to have those things. How do you call this "Heroes" if one of the staples of the whole franchise is just left out?

*cough*

Coca Cola Bottle = The Heroes VI game
Coca Cola bottle cap = Heroes VI town screens

You don't like the cap, but still enjoy the essence of Coke.

Town screens have always been at the essence of building up your town. Seeing the buildings "fade in" as you constructed them is something that I always liked about the game.

That they've taken it away now? Blegh.

However this one is quite fun, seeing that the cap is quite important if you don't want a stale soda

It's very arguable how important town screens are, for me they are important, but I also guess there are people that wont miss it.

Just again to put it into perspective, they are not removing town-screens, they are making them smaller.
Yes that is cause for rage, but lets not rage about "removal" when it's not being removed.

The way I remember town screens will be removed and replaced by minor hack.

I'm not raging, please don't argue like that
