That was really my biggest problem with the H5 screens.

How on earth did the crossbowmen get from the city where they bought their arrows to the tower where they trained, and then down to the city walls to fend off a siege?

Well I think its good start.
I've really liked H5 townscreens and I don't mind if they make it in 3D - actually I would prefer that, but at this point I would accept modern 2D ones.
As some of you mentioned its clearly unfinished product but it looks promising to me.
Eery lights, wisps of fog, moonlight, flags flying in the wind, some moving creatures, maybe some rain and of course accessible, clearly visible and interactive creature dwellings and other structures would make perfect townscreen out of this template.
Other way could be empty, desolate, gloomy half ruined dead town - acceptable by me too.

Although I really liked the 3D town screens from Heroes V, for me it would be enough to have town screens like in Heroes II or Heroes III. They are still my favorites and it was great to see your city growing with every new building.

This sketch of the necropolis town looks interesting. But it's definitive missing the dwellings. I really want to see every structure I build in the town in the town screen. Otherwise we have nothing more than fullscreen town windows and I don't think this is what most of us want.

so true, the h2 (and to a lesser extent h3) buildings in town screens were so distinct, there weren't any similar buildings really.

The H4 buildings themselves were interesting, but all town screens lacked uniformity (as well as urban planning).
H5 was the exact opposite, having town screens with extremely uniform architecture.
Nice to look at while the camera is spinning around, but very impractical.

+1. H2's towns were too cramped, but otherwise I agree. Ah, H3's Conflux, Rampart and Stronghold, now those were great town screens.

I like what I see in the sketch-we do need our dwellings though.

I think that's more an assumption on your side . The way I see it is that the crossbowmen are in service of the army, so the army also supplies them with the bolts they need for their crossbows. And not just the ones they're using, but also stocked bolts, for future use, so they're ready at hand.

The whole logistics chain is something internal to your city, outside the responsibility of your crossbowmen and invisible to you as a player because it would be too much micromanagement. And since you can see around your town, they can scramble to the city gates before the siege is launched and mount a proper defense!

When I wrote 'impractical' I maninly meant it as in 'I can barely tell one building from another'.

Indeed, several of the structures with more texture on the surface and in a darker colour looks like possible dwellings, except if those are only special buildings. But it's not like there are that many special buildings anymore, but maybe it is ... But if those are only the special buildings, then where are the dwellings supposed to go?

Ok I agree that a town screen would look cool but why all the fuss over it? It does not add additional gameplay features correct? So essentially everyone just wants a pretty picture in the background?

Holy Thread Necromancy, Batman!

The fuss is over a pretty picture, yes.  For a lot of us, though, that pretty picture is an iconic part of the Heroes franchise; without it, the game doesn't feel to us like a proper installment of the series.

It's not just a pretty picture; it's the "magic" of seeing the new structure, you've just ordered to be constructed, appear in the town (with a tune to accompany it). To be able to click the structure and interact with it, based on the function it serves.

That's completely missing now.

Me too, though it's been only a few years back when I got the total Heroes pack. A rich, dark and deep tune - I like it .

To me it's not just about being in a window mode but much more than that. The importance of the town screens has been dumped down, which I guess was part of dumping down management.

The pictures themselves aren't pretty to look at and even worse, they are in window mode and they're not interactive. The UI is also horrible. They should fix all that, though I doubt they got the ability to do it.

But there's a lot of classic buildings that's been omitted and I would like to see them back. Hopeless, I know. Probably, we're not gonna see the Mage Guild again but maybe the Tavern / Thieves' Guild combo or the Blacksmith could return. I would like Forts/Citadels/Castles instead of just fortifications, resource silos and any other classics that have been omitted to return. Maybe throw a few GOOD new ideas too but I guess that's a fool's errand.

And ofcourse all the buildings that don't appear on the screen and don't have a design of their own such as marketplace, creature dwellings to appear now. It goes without saying that a different creature dwelling for each different creature to be designed. And screw the adventure map model, I don't care if they don't appear on it but they must appear on the town screen.

The adventure map town model is needlessly big already. They had a very bad idea to have just that instead of screens, and that's why they made it so big, I guess, to compensate for the lack of screens. Well, they suck! They are incompetent idiots who don't know what the game is all about. Even if they give us the best Town Screens next, which I very much doubt and I still think they're going to remain the worst ones, I owe them no thanks and I will still consider them idiots for coming up with it in the first place.

Lastly, even though they should add all of these features to the Town Screens, they must also make them run faster and smoother. Not only did they chop them down with taking away so much from them but they're so horribly optimized too, that H5's Town Screens work like a dream compared to them.

I would also like them to ditch the common pools but I guess they're not gonna do that. What I would like them to do though and there's no argument in that, is to sell the rights to another company to develop and publish the Heroes franshise. Only then would I thank them.

Overall I think this looks promising. Obviously, it's not a finished product, a lot of things on the buildings are clearly not done at all, and as Cepheus mentions, we don't see the dwellings, which might be why it looks a bit empty with a lot of sky. But I think overall it has a lot more atmosphere, it looks more ... wholesome, for lack of better word, and you can actually make out what's going on.

On a sidenote, the white lights which actually look pretty good will probably be exchanged by those horribly overdone green lights they also plastered all over the units. I hope they'll manage to be a bit more subtle here, green glows can be eery and nice, but it doesn't have to look like a whole neon sign park come alive.

I kind of second everything written here. The town looks a lot more like a town and I'd love to see such townscreens, even 2D. I could possibly appreciate 2D more because it saves space for the engine, actually.

I think HoMM 6's art direction was mostly amazing, but the coloring choices are the exception. No one can take seriously a green sky, no matter how many will'o'wisp are in the air. To be honest, it's more of a common problem for all the factions, they are color-paletted like if the game is made for some children used to Power Rangers or such who need to recognize things by their color. At some point in the story, I saw Cate's face for like 5 seconds, and the color of her eyes was enough to tell me what Cate was really up to. This is not what I'd call a functional artistic design.

I would like to ask a FAVOUR from all the insiders!!!
Please make sure Ubi knows that Town Screens they are about to make MUST be FULL SCREEN!
It is important as otherwise it is not going to make a big difference , and all their work on new town screens will be in vain.
Thank you
