Open vrs. Closed

I have never liked closed maps too much. I don't like waiting until weeks 3 or 4 before fighting your opponent. Another thing is with closed maps, by the time someone does do everything on their side and their opponent does everything one their side, by the time everyone is done it will come down to who got the best artifacts. The only way to win in a closed map is to get your stuff sooner than your opponent so you have more artifacts than your opponent or if you got double towns and in some cases triple towns.

It all has to do with taste.

People who like closed maps prefer the final battle play.  With everything on the adventure map just tools for increasing the main hero's effectiveness.  They love the final long battle and prefer a game with someone of like mind and talent so they can enjoy a very tactics oriented battle.  They also seem to like playing the same maps over and over again until they know it very well, and they assume that the opponant also knows the maps very well.

People who like an open map prefer strategic decisions on the adventure map.  They prefer playing on maps that they haven't seen before and have to explore without knowing what is in the black.  They prefer that the opponants are also ignorant of the maps contents so that the strategic decisions are from equal knowlege.  Battles are fun but map and town managemant should dictate the final outcome.

Either style is fine and niether is superior, its a choice between strategy and tactics.  I prefer open maps, I like the exploration and discovery aspects of the game.  Although some of my most enjoyable games have come from winning a long battle, outnumbered and winning by good tactics.

Do you any good open style maps? I have only played bfh and that style seems to appeal to me more than hg, North vrs. South, and other closed maps, because it seems more like a race to do all the stuff on your side of the map with the most effectiveness rather than planning and such. I would probably prefer random maps, but I like to be familiar with the maps that I play. The quality of the random maps seem very undeveloped and not a lot fun. I think that I enjoy playing a completely new TOH map more than a random map. If someone could make a map that was kind of memorization at the beginning and then turned into a chess game almost where someone would have to out manuveur their opponent.

You're right Oldtimer, I don't really like the actual fighting part of the game where you wait with you're Ancient Behemoths so you can shoot someone's creature a couple times to wear it down before you wipe out almost all of those troops to not fear losing an Ancient Behemoth if it retaliates. The battles aren't that fun; probably because I'm not very good at them.

Oldtimer

I completely agree with Oldtimer.

I prefere random maps, as they are unique each time. I know they are seldom fair in respect to resources, artefacts and som on, but luck is part of the game to I think.

I also agree that pepole that like closed maps are as entitled to their opinion as I am to mine. We only have different preferences of how to play.

Beltway

Beltway is a great open map.  The classic matchup is purple vs orange.

Early decisions matter more on such a map, and army/resource management is critical.  I am still learning new ways to play this map and no two games have been alike.

One caution.  Red should be avoided because the position is very strong and was never really intended to be anything other than a computer position in tournament play.  New and veteran players should note that red is quite dominant particularly on 200% difficulty where the gold rewards are magnified (and red can reach them first, and has more gold accessible in the first 2 days anyway).  But its a great map when orange vs purple is the match.  Red simply isnt a serious position.

Yes Beltway is the only really good open map sadly.

Veterans get teased for liking it but only by players who don't have the skill to play it.

Beltway will test every skill imaginable and no angels to protect you, no 5 dragon utopias to bail you out and no free expansion.

You have to fight for everthing.

I hope in H4 more people make maps like that.

time for more crap

moc is only mad because he cant overcome his bad luck or good luck on a closed map because somebody with more skill on closed maps can normally beat him. Same goes for open maps people cant overcome the onslaught that open maps provide due to bad and good luck and an open map player will beat a non open map player normally.

Both maps require a different amount of skill and different ends of good luck. I find open maps to be the generic heroes 2 maps diplo rules with a magic hero. Closed maps are the same but for a might hero. Might hero on closed is normally a well rounded hero with decent magic whereas a open map calls for the magic hero to be pumping spells out their ass.

Why are there few players good at open maps? becasue open maps are NOT popular. I use to love bfh/me vs you style maps till dw came around then i got more into the closed map playstyle which is alot more fun for me

I have not met a player who is good on both even flaming and anal.

I just played 7 lakes on heroes 2 the other day was great fun. I would call that map an open/closed map due to the number of castles and infinite amount options u have. Its not a heroes 3 map tho. Sorceress's rule

Everyone tells me, that cd maps (maps that came with h3) are for beginners to show them how to play.
I say, they are some of the best maps available, offering many different strategies.  They take more skill and strategy than any closed map and more than many opens.

On an open map, for instance, you can send your main to the left or right side of the mountains to your south... or to the east around the lake, etc.
The enemy hero could be coming up the right side of the mountains, and you send your hero to the left... whereas on a closed map, you have 1 (occasionally 2) ways of passage, and that way is guarded by, as mocara said, angels or some other L7.

So on closed maps, you can completely let your guard down for 2 weeks or so and send your main somewhere to get artys and exp, whereas, on an open map, you hafto always have your guard up, and at the same time, gather those artys, exp, and fight the enemy.

I am not trying to force people to like Open maps more, I am just trying to make it clear, that open maps require much more strategy, and therefore seem to determine who is the better player much better than closed maps.

Anyways, I am glad to see some other people that see maps as I do.
Maybe we can form an alliance and get people to play more open maps once h4 comes out hehe.

You are right Andi but also Ironic.

Because all you do is come on here and say "Same old crap" which is in itself the same old crap.

And all CheaterUnicorn ever does is lie in wait so he can jump out and attack me.

Then again I'd be the same way if I was the mental midget that he is.

BTW Camel I also think the CD maps are great.

They need minor edits to be fair in MP mode but Islands and Caves, Emerald Isles, Ascension, All for One and Divided Loyalties all are good.

There are a lot of people out there in toh who still play good maps but you will have to search hard to find them.

poor moc

u know moc there is a difference between acting smart and being smart. I wonder if you know the difference. All i see is you acting smart and smarmy(look it up if you dont know what it means i wont explain it), Its really pathetic that a 27 year old boy that runs his own business (i still wonder what the site address is for the stuff that you sell) to come here and attempt to look intelligent by putting down others for having a different opinion that you do. Oh well what can you expect from such a person/a(probably the same thing).

lol

Knew if I looked in here Id see the topic change to some fight between people.

as for the topic.. in my Oppinion Beltway isnt a bad map, but by far isnt the greatest map. Then again there is no greatest map, except for greatest personal preference, so to Mocara its the greatest, to someone else it isnt..people should deal with it

As for my preference...i have no 1 map I like, my oppinion changes often. mostly cause i get tired of a map after awhile, u can say when I feel I conquer the map and can play almost mindlessly its no more fun.

but open vs closed..to me is a tie, each has aspects I like and dislike

Call me crazy...

But one of my personal faves is C a C.

Unique strategy, balanced, (on C a C allies, you MUST change blue's color to purple, so teams are 1st and 4th, vs. 2nd and 3rd to make it fair ), and FUN... hehe, on no other map do you get to have early wars like that
Also, on no other map are scout wars sooo important.
There is a mad race to the gold mines and relics underground, and one has to judge what kind of army strength he will send (I have seen it where someone not send enough, and he got to the relic and lost to the L4)

Man, that map is fun.
True, has been overused some, but it is one of the most unique maps in strategy and in anything else you can think of for a map ... and i think after it's overuse, people have not been playing it much in a long time, and its time to go back to it!

I still say one of the greatest maps is jb's last battle.  No relics, no luck artifacts, no dragon utopias.  Open map, large, so no 'rush' possible, with dynamic access points.

I made a similar map to Last Battle..

It was called Final Conflict..I addded a lil more dynamics to it. each side has 3 towns total, and there is 1 in middle, but its a large map, so you dont get quick games.

It was designed for Universal Commander tournament they had in season 1, so more thought was put into it when being created, altho it was made bout 2 years ago lol

But lots of options on it, so I suggest people try it, esp since its open, but not the rush type open, you usually dont scout wars till end of week 1 and beyond.

But to be honest, i havent played it in over a year, so not sure how it plays by todays standards lol, but last time i played it was with Hapkane and I remember it was a great game
