What is a good campaign like?

I was just wondering and really eager to hear your opinion...

Recently, I was thinking about forging a campaign (or even more) for H5 (RPE, to be totally true).
Now, the issue is that:
- I don't really like H3 campaigns (some which many people simply adore)
- I really like H4 campaigns
- I quite like H5 campaigns (which many find terrible)

So, I would love to hear your reasons:
What is required for a truly great campaign?

i dont agree with you, i loved the h5 campaigns

any ways, a good campaign needs:
a gripping storyline (peope will want to keep playing)
fun gamelay and lots of strategy.
dialogue and comedy can always attract attention
clear, fun, and gripping objectives.

and most importantly, what you think is important

I'd say that moral problems and mature, emotion provoking scenarios. What makes those is based on each person's personal preference.

I liked the H5 campaigns, but they were not connected to anything else, and they didn't have the best back story.

I don't understand how anybody could survive the H5 campaign. It was the worst story I have ever encountered in any video game ever.

A great campaign is actually "Legends of the Ancients" done by Marzhin himself...busy playing it and the story, the quests, the hectic rushing of enemy heroes towards your castle, is simply gripping and fantastic!

Good campaigns have following qualities:
- need long-term strategic approach
- "full" landscape (not walking long distances with nothing to do)
- "turn-to-page" adventure quality (choices)
- lots of secondary objectives

Big battles, challenges and growing power of your main hero. Luckily in campaigns, unlike in scenarios, you can sweep his army at the beginning and give huge forces to opponents to deal with.

imo a good campaing is one that has:

1) Intriguing story, something that keeps you blown everytime. That means, good-quality cutscenes, intresting/funny/nice dialogues (not stupid ones like in H5) , epic moments and everything that makes you feel you are that hero you play in the game. Evil or good, that up to you

The quests are other important part of a good campaing. They must be intresting, not something like Collect 5 piles of gold and bring them to me , they should be challanging, leading you to great battles, but when I say challanging, I don't mean an annoying search for a Tear of Asha, I simply hate those

2) Always campaings should be different from a normal costum game, with unique heroes, creatures, map objects etc., and some intresting eye-candy locations.

Also, those maps where you play the campaing should be diversified, with different terrain, enemies, flora and fauna, something that gives the world from the game a little 'life'.

3) Lots of strategy involved.

I played 2 maps of H5 campaign, and well, between the uninspired "acting" of the characters and spending most of the time trying to understand what I'm actually supposed to do...

seriously, if I wanted to wander on a map with no clue about what to do, I would play a point and click...

well, or maybe it is glitches.

I read, I think, in the 1st necro mission of ToE, you are supposed to find the soul things, find ore to open a portal, defeat some super hero and then capture a castle at the end of a long path.

I think I found the souls, but had no idea how to pick them up. I could open the portal and capture the castle at the end of the long path before actually fighting the super hero. and can't come back if I remember well.

Sounds like a game mess up, a shame because Arantir's campaign was quite good.

well, all I can say is that avoiding the super hero was intended. as I had little more that what my hero started with.

and even replaying it, I still coulnd't pick the souls

Almost everything was already said, fascinating storyline, quests, dynamic hero etc. I would also point two things: random events, and element of surprise. Imagine normal day(ingame) traveling from one spot to another, and suddenly happens something totally surprising, unrelated and tasteful. A random event that prevents boredom, maybe some riddle, some prophecy, some funny story, maybe an old tramp telling awesome fairytale. How about sudden earthquake, falling with only a scrap of army into dangerous dungeon? That would be awesome. Also twists and turns, not illogical, but unexpected changes in storyline. Keeping player focused, tensed, so he could eventually sit back, breathe deeply, looking at credits thinking 'what the hell did just happen?'

Heroes V campaign was close to that, somehow it was very easy to play it, it wasn't heavy, a bit like a fairytale. HoMM3 Campaigns were harsh, long, interesting, but different, not that 'lite'

My personal favourites were Heroes Chronicles campaigns. Tales about Tarnum were catchy, playing Chronicles was like reading a fairytale, I really enjoyed plot, every story ended right when it should, it wasn't too long. A pity there were only four of them.

Favourites.. I'd have to say Gem's, Sandro's, Adrienne's, Tarnum's Clash of dragons and sword of frost(chronicles), Catherine's armegeddon's blade. They all shared good narrative, storyline and challenging gameplay.
