Again, those dragons could just be red to retain their fire breath. That's a simple solution, a working one, and honestly - there's not much reason why are they black in the first place.

It's not at all unusual for Dragons to have magical abilities very different from the usual fire Breath, even in western origins.
Like Greek myth or Norse myth.
Mythologically speaking, dragons are usually portrayed as highly intelligent, magical, often even divine.
Fire Breath is appears on a hand-full and magic restinace on Dragons was invented in the 70s by DnD to give Wizards a foil, wizards were just OP (and untill 4th edition stayed OP).

So it's not AS original as you might think, and does it make sense? yes.

Having a special ability to eat creatures would be fun. And perhaps with ketchup, or what do you think Mr.D?

A 'devour' ability doesn't sound bad, are you talking about a certain damage or something similar to the wraith ability? (kill one unit)

A 'devour' ability shouldn't work on champions or larger creatures though, for obvious reasons.
And gobbling down living creatures doesn't seem very... sophisticated (really, it depends on the dragon).
Furthermore, you'd have to make a believable 'eating' animation,
which ain't an easy thing to do.
I mean, just look at the Cyclops, its diet is fairly limited.

A most savoury idea, a plan of truly good taste.
I'd like more helpings of this concept!

yes, there are dragons with mystical powers, who are quite intelligent, but I think, the ones without them are even more common and so they should use the "normal" ones as units and the intelligent dragons as bosses.

Any better ideas Mr Dragon? At least it lookes better than the H5 black dragon.
You know, they are meant to be grotesque, not like fairy dragons.

If you want black dragon concepts, there are literally hudnreds out there.

YOu know, they can fly, using gryphon like dive attack could work, haveing an ability to stun objects near them and so on.

Lastly, for things that are so uber, they had a very high initiative.Obviously, they should

I disagree. The ideal black dragon should be majestic yet terrifying.
Fearsome yet dignified. Old and wise but quick to anger.

All the pictures in the two posts above are better then the "grotesque" dragon, who I'd say doesn't look as much grotesque as he does "sickly".

My favorite Black Dragon designs are still DnD 3.X:

Acid breathing, skull headed, swamp dragons known for their cunning and cruelty, they also have a fondness for silver and prefer decorating their hoard with silver objects and coins.

Not to say that I don't have my own ideas about black scaled dragons, my own tabletop RPG setting has some with their own spin on things, one of which is indeed closely bonded to Darkness to the point where she breathes a cloud of magical darkness that saps the lifeforce out of it's victims, in addition to making it impossible for them to see or hear within the cloud.

I'd draw her myself but that would take a while, so I'll just use this to make do:

My own contribution.
Urgh god-forbid there'll be trouble once nightterror gets here . Also stick to the topic ladies (myself included).

Also admira notice that all the dragons appear to be bigger then h5 dragons, and h5 dragons are in constant flight (for some inane reason) which is probably why. (Wing span).

The H5 one is a punny.I guess that happened because of the art direction...
However,it sill beats king's bounty's and h4 black dragon

The pictures above are good, I wish one of them made it across the game...

When I mean grotesque I mean this:

They should be fearsome and grotesque. Not something you should find asthetic imo.

The DnD concepts are very good, the best for me so far.

Note:The pic above is just some random pic i choose to bring up the idea what I fidn grotesque.Still,as such, I dont like it as dragon.Imo,dragons should be as grotesque as in the pic,but not influenced by anime.Heck, why dont we just bring the black dragon from H3,in he picture it looks damn good.

No I quite like that Dragon, it's a bit too spikey, but at least it doesn't look like it's about to drop dead from extreme dieting.

But again the above Dragon is not Grotesque, it's not really that easy to apply Grotesque to a dragon and still have it be... a Dragon.
Grotesque is like... "Disturbing" and "Disgusting" at the same time but that's not really a Dragon thing, Dragons are supposed to inspire admiration and/or fear.

Think about any myth involving a Dragon, the Dragon's purpose in any classic myth, be it a malevolent or a benevolent Dragon is to inspire a sense of awe, a higher being, and it's boon or bane is something great and those who can match or even defeat a Dragon are thus great by extention of that Dragon.

I get the feeling that what you're describing fits more down the alley of a Lovecraftian horror, which I wouldn't mind actually, though the Argus, Scylla, Chimera or other suitably chaotic monster could fill that niche.
