Stargazers IC

The ship slowed as it reached the large, green planet. Systems that had been turned off to conserve energy began flickering to life. First, gravity was restored, then the ventilation, then lights. Other systems began to go off automatically, though if one failed, it stayed deactivated. Fortunately for the crew, the most important one didn't.

Whitemoon felt his heart beat. "Good mor-ing comman-" an electronic voice said as he slowly shook off his hibernation. The door on his cell popped open, and he filled his lungs with the first breath of clean air he had had for sixty years.

"Good morning to you too, Lexa." He mumbled stiffly back. The yellow sun peaked through the shuttle's tinted windows, and he got his first good view of the planet. Other cells started opening when he noticed the musky smell. Following it back to the captain's cell, he found a mummified corpse.

"One failure out of all seventy cells, and it had to be the captains." He turned back to the others who were coming out of the pods. "Rise and shine soldiers! We've got some work to do, and some breakfast to eat! Civilians, take your time."

Arlea watched the others stumble and groan as they slowly shook off the effects of a long cryo sleep.  She barely nodded her acknowledgement of their presence and only to a few.  She, as always was already up, wide awake and ready, dressed in full officer fatigues and her elaborate Martian pearl headpiece (denoting her female rank) ever present.  The two long bursts of pure oxygen she had sniffed was already enough to feed her system.

The officers mess hall was still cold and many shivered as they began to sit down for their first meal in decades.  The cold metal tables and chairs an unwelcome respite from their frozen pods.

The constant low melodious hum of the ship; soothing and rhythmic was for once barely audiable above the incessant chatter and sounds of ravenous eating.  Down below the civilians dining hall was beginning to become an excited cacophony.  Arlea couldn't wait to get to her quiet little corner.  Plus true human's and their food always smelt so bad!!!!!

The commander walked into the mess hall immediately after Arlea. They were the only two in there at the moment. "Bugger, can I count on you to keep a secret for a while?" He asked softly, taking the seet next to hers.

Arlea acknowledged her commanding officer, but never stood.  Discipline wasn't exactly lacking here, but they had known each other for a long time, albeit never close.

"Of course Sir", she replied, rather intrigued.  The first incident after 60 years cryo, and the Commander is concerned ... this must be good.

She turned to face him and poured him a coffee.

He sipped his tea. "The captain is dead. I'll make the announcement later today, when everyone else is here. Don't let the civilians know yet." He picked up twelve biscuits and a few slices of bacon. "Be sure to eat allot, you need to rebuild you strength after not moving for so long."

Arlea watched the Commander non-chalantly drink his tea and eat his food.  She looked at the coffee mug and pushed it away.

"The Captain is dead ... hmmmm" she thought to herself.  "Well its not as if he will be missed, the man didn't know his ass from his elbow mostly.  So that means that either the Commander is probably going to get the nod, or this could get ugly".
"So are you assuming command Sir?", she asked, already really knowing the answer.  The ship could do a lot worse than have the Commander as their Captain, a lot worse.  She looked on the table to see if there were any Martian Rowanberries.  She was partial to those.

"The news is likely to scare the civilians, Sir", she stated.  "It may be a good idea not to tell them until the new Captain is sworn in.  They might not even notice".  And throwing a glance at the monitors, the civilians excitedly congregating in their dining hall, all smiles and excited handshakes, she turned back to the Commander with a raised eyebrow.  "Its your call Sir".

He nodded, critically watching the civilians filing in. "Yes, you're right, as always Arlea. I'm going to need officers like you around me soon..." Whitemoon fell silent as even more people began to come in, families talking and friends picking up sixty year old conversations as if they had begun yesterday.

"Loc-ing jam." The announcers rang out.

"Well, damn." The commander muttered dully. "I think we need you a little sooner than we had hoped. Let's go help spring some of our colleagues from their frozen prisons, hmm?"

Arlea had jumped up at the announcers voice.  Looking at her commanding officer, that look on his face said it all.  Damn!!! they both knew what this meant.

"We really don't need to lose any more officers, Sir", she stated the obvious, as they hurredly, but politely moved through the crowd towards the pod level (not wishing to concern others).  "When are HQ ever going to give us military the same damn pods as they do civilians!!!", she muttered.  "This is bordering on negligence, Sir".

She followed the Commander through the intricate tunnels and gangways, eventually both breaking into a sprint.  "You take the right, I'll take left, Sir", she called as she left him behind, both dashing towards the Pod 2 and Pod 1 aisles.

Whitemoon picked up a rod of carbon-steel rod and began brute-forcing each of the jammed pods. Getting into the proper position, he threw all his weight onto the rod, popping up the lid and getting fresh air into the pod. A grateful gasp escaped. "Thank you sir..."

So he went to open each of the cells, stopping at the last one. "What's this?" The man inside hadn't thawed yet. "Well now, guardian, aren't you a lucky one?" With his massive height and weight, the man would have suffocated long before the commander had arrived. "Herbert Mustaffa, you are one lucky son... I'm going to have to thaw you I guess." He started to hack the mainframe on the pod, trying to fix the problem.

Arlea ran to the first pod, seven of them had their warning lights flashing red.  It was those she struck first.  The high density toughened glass cracked from her first punch and shattered from her second.  After breaking open the first seven, she programmed the emergency opening code into the remaining 5 pods.  Their doors shuddering open.  Arlea was rewarded by the sound of retching and gasping.  "You're all good then", she shouted before making her way to aisle 1 and Whitemoon.

She found him, trying to prop up the semi frozen body of the ships Guardian.  A steel rod and debris at his feet.  For a second Arlea took in the comedy of the image.  Whitemoon's short stocky body almost engulfed by the thawing hulking mass of Mustaffa.  "Ummm Sir, you might be okay just leaving him there to thaw, the Medical Officer will be here shortly.  Best leave the mouth to mouth to her huh, I think Mustaffa will appreciate that in the long run", said with a wry smile.

"Hmm? He's perfectly thawed. The blue on his skin and the white in his hair is just the side effects of the particularly swift thawing I just gave him, though I probably should leave him here." He set the giant back down on the cell. "Unless you would want to carry him? We should probably get him to the med bay."

"Yes Sir", Arlea picked up the Guardian and followed Whitemoon along the gangways towards med bay.

The med bay, was in stark constrast to most of the ship ..... bright, roomy and clinical.  Arlea threw the unconscious hulk of Mustaffa onto one of the med bay's cots.

Arlea's right eyebrow raised again.  Turning to no one in particular, "No mockery intended Sir, its just the truth".

She walked over to Mustaffa's cot.  The med bay was completely empty.  She flicked the vibrate switch on the cot.  "Might as well get this started", she said to herself.  "Unless we end up having to replace our Guardian as well as our Captain".

She silently started prepping the Guardian, putting the drips in and flicking the monitors on.  A rhythmic beep reassuringly sounding, breaking the silence.  Then she left.

At the exact moment the door slammed shut Mustaffas eyes snapped open and he sat up gasping for air. He looked around and shook his head slowly. What the hell was he doing in the med department of the ship? He removed the drips and rose slowly, testing his balance. All was well, he must have been out of crio for at least a half hour or so, which meant someone had to have carried him here. Poor souls. He found some coverings and dressed himself, then looked in the mirror. Mustaffa looked ridiculous, the medic clothing was way too small, and he looked like a tourist with very poor taste in clothes.

"Now I need to find my armor, and then no one will dare mention this." he murmured, and started moving to his storage compartments.

The moment Hugh realized that he was awake he opened his eyes. Being unable to move was a feeling he much disliked. However as a sniper it was something he was used to.
As he tried to get out he discover that the door seemed to be blocked or jammed as it would not open. Considering his state, it was really hard for him to get it open, but finally it did.
As it opened the sound of air pressure was released and new air filled to cell that he was in. With careful steps he stepped out and took a deep breath. Finally his thoughts were his own, no more would they be subject to the somewhat random cryo-dreams.

"Testing, testing. Ahh glad to know that my precious voice still work." He said to himself.
"Now lets see if my digestive system work properly as well." He added as he went for the mess hall with one mission, the mission to eat...

Mat Robling rolled out of his pod, hitting the ground with a loud thump. "Uggg... Last time I get drunk before sixty years of crio..." He began to work off a sixty year old hangover that progressively became worse as that loud grinding sound rang out. "What the f*** is that?!" He grumbled.

Stumbling around, the mechanic located the scource of his irritation. It was the Electrician, snoring loudly in his crio-pod. "God-damn little..." Mat kicked the pod hard enough to bruise his toe and walked down to mess hall, mumbling obscenitites.

Basil Crenshaw felt a thud, rolled over, opened the door of his pod and stuck his head out.
"Knock it off, will ya! I'm trying to sleep here!"
He closed the door again, and tried to roll over again, but felt the tug of the wiring. Basil looked around and saw that he was hooked up on life-support. Something must have gone wrong and his pod reacted by hooking him up.
He undid several tubes and monitoring devices and got out of the pod.
Basil fished his glasses out of his pocket and placed them carefully on his nose so he could look over them easily. He realy only wore them to look smart and the glasses were a pair of autoshades, that adapted themselves to the level of the light.
He put on his coat and wandered out of the room, trying to remember where they served the coffee. He'd need at least 4 cups before he was worth anything to anyone.

Whitemoon sat down as the others began to file in to the officers mess hall. He glanced at the monitors recording the civilians and nodded as the last of the fifty stubled into the rec-center. "So then, no other major failures. Good. Computer?" A small click sounded as voice recognition picked up the command. "Record that on the 12 of April, 2389 ad, sixty nine of the seventy crew members abored Gallilao 26 woke up from Crio-Stasis. End record." Another click signaled the computer's recorder turning off. "Repeat." He commanded.

His voice came back to him, almost complete but missing a few a's and c's. "Good. Shut down." One of the flashing red lights overhead turned off. "Activate." It started flashing again. "Good. End test run."
