Mustaffa looked at the scene of the massacre. "Well it seems we have sort of allies in these woods." he said, smiling slightly. "Next time I want a flamethrower, it's better against charges like this."

Arlea remembered 'Duncan', the lizard, safely tucked away in her pocket.  She gently put her hand inside the material and felt around for the creature.  She found it, its skin warm but fluttering.  It didn't need any coaxing to get into her hand and she very gently held him.  His coloration was a vivid speckled navy/black and she swore it was shaking.  She softly stroked its back and to her rather surprised delight Duncan began to turn turquoise again.  "Oh you cute thing" she whispered to him and Duncan made the weird clicking noise again.  "Are you talking to me?", she asked him with a wide grin on her face.

Turning around, she searched for the psychic.  He was on his own, looking bored despite the madness that had just ensued.  "Alex!", she called out, getting his attention.  She jogged over to him, with a massive smile on her face as she presented 'Duncan' to the indifferent psychic, "Alex, you have got to see this!!".  Realizing her behavior, she stopped smiling abruptly and cleared her throat, rather embarassed.  "Umm, Alex I've discovered this little fellow.  He's extremely friendly and very interesting.  I wondered if he might be of any interest to you?".  She held 'Duncan' up to the psychic and Duncan immediately turned a luminous cerise.  "He's very curious and quite sweet.  No aggression", she offered the silent psychic.  "I can leave him here with you, if you want, but I'm rather attached to the little guy, so when you've finished, I'd like him back", she said in all seriousness.

"A collective organism?!", Arlea repeated almost perplexed.  "Alex do you think these creatures might be connected psychically?".  Arlea had noticed Alex's brief pause when he touched 'Duncan'.  "Well anyway, I'll be keeping the little fella for a little while longer", she smiled, "we can study him when we have a bit more time and things have quietened down".

Arlea took a bright emerald green 'Duncan' back to the camp's fire.  The creature had curled up in her hands and was going to sleep.  "Once Mustaffa is free I'll let him know what just happened with Alex", she thought.

The communicator cuts out for a second or so. When it comes back, the last of the sounds of a large animal's death throes comes through. "I'm back. You used a quarter of your ammunition. "Good, I will see you in two to three days, depending on the speed of our engineers and the self-repairing program. Whitemoon out." The commander turned off the transmitter and turned back to the largish alien that had broken its restraints. They had only brought one egg, but this was a different species entirely from the ones he and the others had captured or killed.

"How did you get aboard... and did you mean harm to me, or the things I was studying?" If only he had been able to recognize the mental patterns of the alien for hostility and...  what was he thinking? "Recognize the mental patterns?" He wasn't an empath, not even a psychic. How could he detect anything without a monitor and electronics? Chuckling and trying to shake the foolish but stubborn thought out of his head that he was an empath, he turned back to his subjects. I don't laugh. I can't feel humor. The realization of what had happened hit him like a load of bricks. He wasn't supposed to have emotions.

Something was wrong with him... or maybe... something was wrong with reality itself... Trying to shake off the feeling of impending doom that had befallen him, Whitemoon went back to his study of the aliens.

Back on the planet night has fallen. Many small whirring creatures that flash much like lightning bugs are flying around the forest and in the plains, though you can't see those from where you are. Sometimes a "flasher" winks out and a lizard lands in the clearing with one of the thumb-sized insects in its mouth. Arlea's lizard participates, jumping to the top of her head and then catching one of the insects in midair as it launches from her scalp. It returns and curls up in her lap while contentedly munching on its midnight snack.

Mustaffa is doing what his job describes... guarding. The Guardian watches the forest wearily, vigilant for any threats. After a while, Ev takes his place and Mustaffa is free to socialize. (Improv man!)

Hugh is scott free this night, guarding duty is being done by Ev and Mustaffa! He's free to explore this world they landed on or talk with others as he so pleases, or sleep if it suits him.

Alex, unlike the others, is sort of busy. The world has figured out that he is not only a psychic, but that he also can hear it. So the world is struggling to find a way to talk with him...

As the night drew in, Arlea sat herself down in front of her tent and decided to clean and check her equipment.  'Duncan' had played in her lap, running around in circles chasing his own tail or her finger as she played with him.  He eventually settled down, curling up in a ball after she had given him a small bite of chocolate.  She had grown very attached to the alien lizard and she occasionally and absentmindedly stroked him as she checked her tool belt.

She had become aware of the strange glow worm type creatures that had congregated above the fire light and torches.  Like regular mosquito's they buzzed and hummed, but they were much bigger, similar in size to Earth's hornets and a bright fluorescent pink. What concerned Arlea, was that these things would bite.

However, they seemed to keep they're distance, more interested in flying in circles in the light.  The first time 'Duncan' ran up Arlea onto her head, he made her jump and she almost let out a squeal.  'Duncan' had launched himself bodily from to the top of her head into the swarm of alien bugs, flying several feet into the air.  He caught a bug and Arlea, panicing, had caught him as he fell back towards her.  The second time, Arlea was prepared and marvelled at her little friend.  Eventually 'Duncan' curled back up in her lap and went to sleep.

Arlea thought about climbing into her tent, but the alien night sky had caught her attention.  It was breathtaking.  The night sky was a miriad of deep purples, azure blues, oranges and electric green flashes and it crackled just like Earth's Aurora Borealis.

Since after the battle Hugh had just cleaned his guns and eaten his supper. That was it, the rest of the time he'd been restless, which he still was. The guard duty had been left to Ev and Mustaffa, so he was free to do pretty much whatever.
As he looked around in the camp he saw Arlea sitting outside her tent, playing with her little lizard or whatever it was.
Hugh turned to the forest.
"How about a taking a cozy walk in the woods?" he asked himself.
Without telling anyone, he left the camp and entered the jungle. He looked towards the sky, but could only see very little of the light  that was coming from the colorful sky. He imagined that it would be really dark inside the jungle because of the thick canopy. However it wasn't dark, all around him he could saw colorful plants that lit the entire jungle, making the entire surroundings clearly visible. He saw all sorts of beautiful flowers, and strange insects that was fully busy pollinating them. Insects that was clearly only active during the night.
Hugh was certainly no biologist, but he assumed that the flowers was kept hidden during the day for other insects. And sort of emerged during the night with their bright colorful lights to attract the "right kind" of insects.

As Hugh was staring at the amazing environment that was surrounding him, he completely forgot about being watchful of all the harms and threats that was around him.

Above Hugh a chuffing sound, much like that made by loggers cutting down trees, moves rapidly up a tree. A little chattering animal can be heard, and a pair of innocent yellow eyes can be seen above him, far above him. The tree itself looks easily climbable, with large, low branches coming to Hugh's waist and plenty of room to move through the limbs of the large plant. In fact, the only thing that might be hard is getting traction on the glass-smooth bark, otherwise the trees of this forest seem made for climbing. This particular tree appears to have a few puncture marks in the bark, as if made by a small, climbing and clawed creature. More than likely the thing looking at you now.

Around you, little nocturnal things that look like white squirrels bounce to and fro, eating whatever they come across. One bites your toe. (Go ahead and shoot it)

Arlea can see the stars, even through the spectacular light show. A singe moon, almost exactly like the one over earth, can be seen as a pale phantom highlighted against the stunning night sky. The amount of similarities of this world to earth is shocking... Almost as if something had plucked the human's home out of their heads.

Still, the night is spectacular. The civilians and the crew might like to get pictures of their new home, the place they were coming to in mere days. Didn't Ev have a camera...?

Hugh had stopped watching the flowers as he heard the small squirrel like creatures gather around him. He looked at them with curious eyes as they made their funny noises, one of them seemed to be a daredevil. The little brave white squirrel approached Hugh and bit one of Hugh's toes, however the teeth only made it halfway through Hugh's boots.

The bite startled Hugh that he pulled his knife and slashed the little squirrel creature down, something which his little friends did not appreciate.
They seemed to become furious, making a ring around Hugh where they hissed a terrible sound. While they very much looked like squirrels, they were however much bigger. They were standing on their hind legs showing their teeth. Hugh pulled his pistol and were now holding his knife in his left hand and his gun in the right one. Hugh was somewhat crouching as he pointed his gun from one the creatures to another while he was slowly moving.

Something that looks like acorns pours down on the "Squirrels'" heads, causing them to slink away. The "lemurs" that Hugh saw before keep throwing acorns down at the squirrels, and Hugh gets the feeling that there is a routine to this, the squirrels get out of hand and the lemurs put them in their place.

Again, to point out, that tree looks rather climbable, and the forest has many surprises.

Alex feels the massive pool of consciousness gather itself up as he tries to make contact with it. The message was conveyed, but not understood as such. It might be from the planet assuming that since it knows everything by name that everything knows it by name, or it might just be a translation error. Either way, it asks Alex in a thunderous roar, "What does it mean, 'Who?'" The sound in your head is enough to momentarily dive off conscious thought.

Quickly the planet senses that it had been to forceful in its attempt to communicate, and tries again, softer. "What does it mean, 'Who?'"

Ev called out to Arlea, "Hey, Marsy! Do you think you could get a picture of this sky? I left my camera in my tent and, well, Mustaffa might to something to me if I leave guard duty..."

"Hell yes I would!" Mustaffa called from his tent.

"So, ah, maybe you could get a picture to show the folks back in the shuttle, hey?"

Hugh watched as all the surrounding squirrels disappeared, reacting to those other critters high up in the trees.
The Sniper observed the trees that was all around him, their bark was smooth as glass, but they look climbable. They had easily grabbable branches, and small hole in the trunk of the tree where a person could put his feet.

Hugh approached the closest tree and grabbed one of the branches, then he put his right foot in one of the holes. He grabbed another branch  and put his left foot in the next hole. Like this he started to climb the tree. Maybe there would be something interesting high up there, if not the view should be terrific, He thought.

Returning outside, she primed the camera for continuous recording as she checked the viewfinder and holding the camera high she panned around slowly making sure the iridescent sky was captured in all its crackling glory.  "You can hear a kinda of static, the sky crackles.  I'm wondering if we're near a magnetic pole or if this is some kind of atmospheric anomaly".  She recorded about 5 minutes worth before speaking into the mic again, "Commander, you might be interested in this little fellow, he's quite friendly", as she gently lifted a sleeping Gordon from her pocket and filmed the him for Whitemoon.

She finished recording and went back to her tent and sent the footage to Whitemoon.  Then lying down, she quickly fell asleep.

The planet seems taken aback by Alex's hostility. "We are sorry, visitor. We only didn't understand what you meant. We are the birds, plants, animals, air earth and water that is all around you. We are this world, and we welcome you and your species to a new, if only temporary, home. What do you call yourselves, and what entity do you belong to?"

Hugh climbs the tree with ease, branches that were just so slightly out of his reach almost move to his hand, and the wood is warm to the touch. as he climbs, Hugh can see the little lemur things hopping out of the way to watch from a safe distance. A few of them are eating bark from the tree he is climbing, and Hugh realizes that the holes his feet are going into are eating marks bade by the animals. The lemurs never get close enough for him to get a good look at them.

At the top of the tree, Hugh finds that he is much higher than he would have been on earth, even at the top of a redwood, but he's barely winded. The tree's warmth seemed to seep into him as he climbed it, and his exhaustion just melted away before it truly came. This tree is higher than most, and his view is, in fact, spectacular, completely uninhibited because of the Aurora Borialis lighting up the night.

Arlea's transmission reaches Whitemoon in half a second. Rubbing his temples to get rid of his headache, the commander opens up the transmission and smiles, "Perfect. This should keep the civs from throwing some hissy fit... I... mean... Damnit!" What's wrong with me? I never smile, and I never call civilians "Civs"! Growling in annoyance, Whitemoon goes through the pictures before sending copies to the civilian and crewmen's personal computers.

Something is familiar about that moon... But for some reason, the commander couldn't figure out what. He retired to his bed, wondering why his memory was failing him now as well and thinking to find the answers in the morning.

Hugh stares into the amazing sky with dropped jaw. He can barely believe his eyes. Of all the other moons and planets he has been on, he's never seen any Aurora Borialis like this breath taking one.
After 5 minutes of just endless staring into the night sky, Hugh pulls out his binocular and looks around atop of the canopy.
He can see creatures looking like birds of prey literally diving into the canopy hunting. Once in a while he see the birds exiting forest with their beaks holding the lemur like creatures. Poor animals, but everyone has to become food at least once their life, he thought.

Once Hugh had seen enough he climbed down the tree, though still amazed by the fascinating things he'd seen.
