As Arlea climbed the first stairwell, the first sounds of human proximity because audiable.  By the second stairwell the smell hit her too.  She could feel the ship's neverending pulse, like a mother's heartbeat, vibrate through her.

By the time she reached the crew's mess, she had been jostled several times, received several bemused stares and had at least two people step on her feet.  The last, a female medical officer, had let out a squeak after turning to say sorry and finding herself looking directly at Arlea's ribcage.  She had obviously never seen a Martian before.   Arlea had sarcastically told her, "Have a nice day", and left the woman standing with her mouth open.

Arlea made her way to the head table, joining Gunroy and Sunbeams and sat opposite the fritz.  She said nothing, no greeting or acknowledgement, she merely swivelled in her chair and gazed out of the window into nothingness.

Whitemoon stood up, and the small talk and idle chit-chat began to peter off. "Some of you may not know this, but it is customary for the commanding officer to call a staff meeting after everyone wakes up from crio." He had everyone's attention by now, and some people remarked that the commander was sitting in the captain's chair, while the cap was nowhere to bee seen...

"But the captain is dead." Murmurers of shock and outrage pealed out of the crew, the officers gave each other conspiratorial glances.

"How?" Mat asked.

"He woke up from crio too early. Thirty years too early, and died from suffocation." Whitemoon answered coolly, as if saying that if you jump in the river, you will get wet. "As such, since I am the most senior officer and the late captain's second, I will be taking command. That is barring if anyone can prove that they are better qualified, of course." The room was silent as he stated the open-ended question.

((This is a chance for anyone to speak up in support or against his idea.))

Mustaffa had found the storage rooms where his heavy armor was tucked, and had started strapping it on piece by piece. Problem was, if he did it alone he would spend at least an hour doing this. The giant man cursed under his breath and secured his chestplate. The heavy armor took longer time getting into, but it was much more mobile than one would think due to the mechanics.

At this time the meeting had already started, and he was late and would not make it.

((I will then be gone until late tomorrow, and you will not find Mustaffa until then )

Whitemoon started listing off the problems he had encountered in the test run. "... all in all, 33% of the convenience functions of the ship are as useful as a single ant, the targeting computer is shot and gravity isn't functioning in the training hall. All of them are broken due to neglect. But more importantly-"

"Something is more important than gravity?!" One of the crew protested. The noise level of the room rose as the other crew members also began complaining about many of the broken or lacking systems.

Whitemoon barely looked up and though he didn't raise his voice, everyone could hear him when he said, "Yes." The room began to quiet down when they realized that the commander was serious. When none of them were talking anymore, the commander started explaining, "The civilians cannot know that the captain is dead. If they do, people will begin to panic." He nodded to Arlea, "We have enough people complaining and uneasy because we brought a martian with us as it is. In fact, we had to suppress four civilians before we left on this expedition. How do you think they will react if they learn that the captain is dead?"

"Here is what I recommend. Until such a time as the civilians are used to taking my orders, we pretend that he is merely ill and sending us his commands through me. When they accept my command, then we reveal that the captain has "Died" from his "Disease" and hold a proper military ceremony. Again, does anyone have a better idea or a way to improve this one?"

Arlea stood and the room fell silent once more.  "The ship is still in orbit", she spoke to Gunroy.  "The ship won't dock if the targetting computer isn't functioning and now the gravity .....  Until these problems are fixed, we're not docking anywhere", and after a pause, "plus if we are landing it would make sense to send me down first ... to see if the atmosphere is suitable".  Then turning to Whitemoon, "it might be an idea to tell the passengers that this is routine ... an orientation maintenance run or something".

Ev nodded and jogged off. He later arrived to the communications center. Everything seemed to be working just fine, but he had to make sure, he quickly entered a command into the device.
-"Hello, who is this?"
-"This is ship coded NCR-879. We've just come out of crio. Is everything fine on your end?"
-"Yes, all our systems our working and in operation. And you?"
-"We have some minor difficulties, and the captain perished. Commander has replaced him. Other than that, nothing serious."
-"Understood. Over and out."
-"Aye. Over and out."

He leaned back and sighed. It was going to be a long day.

Arlea quickly made her way back to her pod.  Before she got there she could hear the sounds of struggling.  Some idiot had already set off her trap.  As she turned into her corridor, she discovered a child (age approx. 12) struggling, caught like a fly in her electrical suspensor field.  He immediately stopped struggling as soon as he saw the Martian approaching.  Arlea snarled menancingly (purely for effect), before releasing the suspensor field.  She grabbed the child by his collar before he hit the gangway and growled, "If I find you here again, I will eat you!".  His eyes almost popped and Arlea sent him on his way with a swift kick to his backside as he started to run, lifting him clean off the floor and sending him sprawling 6' further along the gangway.  "Go back to your mother, you brat!".

Once inside her pod, she saw her monitor flashing, "Finally", they were from Ev, updating the crew, functions, instructions, orders etc.  She replied to Ev, a brief message reporting the child in restricted areas, then put on her music and got to work.  She looked at her list .......... "ugh", she was going to be busy.

Basil gulped down his coffee and got up. He checked his PDA and see that the ship's computer had sent him the list, map and schematics he required.
Via his PDA, he called out to the computer.
"Computer where did they store my tools?"
" C'rgohold Mr 'Enshaw." The computer replied.
"Ballbags! No I have to rummage tro the flippin' hold to find the damn things."
Basil trudged over to the cargohold as he looked over the list.
"Don't see why the trainin'room is more important than the food-processor or the cloaker, but you the boss." He said to himself.

After turning half the cargohold upside down to find his tools, Basil made his way to the trainingroom and plugged his PDA into the outside console.
While the device was working out what exactly was wrong, Basil tore off the sidepannel to get into the workings.
"What's all this gunk doing over the gyroscopic detector."
Basil looked at his PDA and saw that it was at least part of the problem, but there was something else blocking the workings, further down.
"If the gyro doesn't work, it wouldn't matter much if I fixed the other thing. Better clean up first."
Basil fished the right tools out of his kit and set to work.

The commander walked into his lab, flicking on the lights with a wave of his hand. He walked around, moving from table to table and clutter to clutter, fondly putting everything to right that has shifted from random starts in the ships engines. When the clutter was fixed and the lab finally looked like it had sixty years ago, Whitemoon paused. He walked back to the still open door and hit the "Close" and "Lock" buttons.

He seemingly carelessly kicked the supplies chest below the samples table, causing a secret compartment to pop open. He pulled out a heavy, diamond edge combat knife and a .3 caliber assault pistol. He moved back to the toxic substances room. It opened automatically when it recognized his body size and temperature. A broken, no, a torn apart cage met his eye. "Damn!"

He moved around in the toxic substance room, holding the knife at throat level and gun loosely at the side. "Here puppy, puppy..." He whispered, trying to draw whatever it was out into the open. A small hiss came from his right. Instantly, Whitemoon twisted to face it. Another came from behind him, and a third from farther down the hall. Blue eyes started to light up the store room. Something jumped. A single shot rang out and the small creature exploded in mid-air. Another came running down the hallway and was blown away as well. The third lunged at him from behind. It missed as the commander ducked hurriedly, slamming into a toxic waste container farther down the hall. The fourth and last one dropped from the ceiling, impaling itself on Whitemoon's knife. It slid off of his knife, twitching convulsively.

He stomped on the last creature's neck, causing it's eyes to roll back into its head. He grabbed one of the small creature's back spikes, dragging it to the specimen's table. Slamming it down it daze it farther, he quickly strapped the alien down. Another round of hissing came from the room, and he closed the door. How the hell did just one of these things reproduce so much... He would figure that out shortly.

Putting on the scattered pieces of his armor, the commander began to examine the lifeform.

Having lit himself a cigarette, Basil was now cleaning the Gyroscopic Detector. He had taken the part out so to better reach every part of the device. The strange moldy gunk that covered it was coming of nicely by blasting it with presurized air. He was humming to himself. He enjoyed fixing stuff, as he found it very satisfying work. Not as much as flying, but it came close.
Hehehe, for all I know, I could be killing the ambasador of the flippin' Mold-People here. I wonder what this gunk is? Better take a sample just in case. Basil thought and put some of the gunk into a tube. He closed the tube airtight and put it his coat-pocket.
Better take that to the lab later, just in case.
A few minutes later, after giving the device a second lookover, Basil put it back and hooked it up again. He set his PDA to run a test, to see if it was working alright.
"Hey, Computer! Establish a com-link to Commander What's-his-face, will ya?" Basil called.
"Establishing link to 'Ommander Whitemoon. Link est'blished." The ship's computer resonded.
"Hey Commanderm'n! The Grav-mechanism is jammed by something. Thing is, the mechanism is in the room itself. So I'ma need a spacewalk suit to go in there and fix it. But the computer needs you code to authorise me getting one."

Mustaffa left the armory with his armor safely secured. The only thing he didn't wear at the moment was his projectile-proof mask, which hand in his multi-tool belt. He walked slowly down the passage toward the feeding stations, as he called it, and looked out the windows he passed. For some reason they were not landing yet, he figured it would be because of malfunctions in the ship. It were common during these long expeditions, and he was used to it. Hopefully the captain would be smart and send him in first, to check for dangers and threats, before exposing the less dangerous crew members to the planet.

Earlir, almost ten years ago (as he has no memory of his time in cryo this does not count), a captain thought him too inexperienced to be the first to set foot on the new planet. Four men died at the hands of native creatures, sacrificed to some kind of God. Since that day he always wanted to be the first, as he felt it was his responsibility to take care of the safety of the crew.

Mustaffa reached the feeding stations, and found it filled with civilians. Their eyes followed him as he entered and approached. He ignored them and kept his eyes forward toward the food he chose. Mustaffa ate quickly, finishing his food as fast as possible so that he could find the captain. He then left again, ignoring the eyes that followed him, and asked a crew member he didn't remember the name of at the moment for the location of the captain. ((Gnomes, random crew member. "Uhh, well the 'Captain' is dead, but you can find the commander in the science-lab-area... place." The man was slightly pale and shocked when he looked up at the giant. "Do you... Need help finding it?"

*
The commander had barely had time to hit the switch that cut out all the background noise coming from the screeching small creature when he was expected to respond. "Yes, yes. Permission granted." After pressing a few buttons on a wrist scanner allowing the electrician access, he monotonously said, "There. Go ahead." He went back to the tests, confident that there was no way the radio could carry the high pitched frequency of the alien's screams.
