BixieBlister's Sylath Bastion Town

Ok. Bixie, I like what you said in the last post concerning the three races satyr, kitsune and the ones who require armor. Here's an idea I have that could incorporate all three.

The Sylath worshipers form the Bastion town. They live in tall towering structures and build their dwellings and other buildings on different floors of the said structure.

As for a race, here's what I've got. The kitsunes are mischievous, secretive schemers who have built a secretive kingdom based on order. while they may respect, in theory, the necromancer's philosophy, the very act of raising the dead disgusts them. they hate both demons and orcs for their chaotic nature. the naga are looked upon with mutual respect. so is the academy faction. the elves (both sylvan and dungeon) are looked down upon while the fortress and haven factions are seen as fledgling nations in need of teaching. (fill in the blanks as to why the kitsunes feel this way)

the kitsunes strive to reach "etherealness". this means that they become one with their dragon god who basically turns them into spirit like beings with no physical form but they can occupy armor and such and are able to manipulate them and move them around. this is so they don't have to sleep, eat or do anything mortal but unlike the undead they are of purer form and not rotting corpses. they strive to reach being ethereal so they can pursue their knowledge without having to deal with lesser tasks of sleeping, eating etc

so the units might look something like this. mind you (that the upgraded core units all look like ethereal versions of the their normal selves and might have an ability called etherealness... details later)
Core:
1. Archer-Master Archer
Kitsune soldiers armed with longbows.
2. Wind Dancer-Wind Dervish
Kitsune warriors armed with blades and move like whirlwinds which they emulate when attacking their enemies.
3. Seer-Oracle
The kitsune casters that can see into the future and form the religious caste of the Bastion faction.

Elite
1. Sylph-Verdant Sylph
Air creatures that look very much like the sprites of the sylvan faction, except that in our version, sprites are actually tiny and attack in swarms while sylphs are around 5 feet tall and can fly.
2. ?? Beast Unit with four legs
3. Mounted cavalry unit

Champion
1. Thunderhawk-Stormhawk
The roc birds that have been blessed by sylath, turning them into elemental creatures comprising completely of electricity and attack by spewing lightning at their enemies.

hope to hear your ideas bixie. please feel free to change any of it.

to me, on a personal note, the MM universe doesn't really need another aloof seperatist race obsessed with order... that's what elves do, and now Naga do, and they both do their jobs very well. the MM universe is also drowning in Proud warrior race guys, with Orcs, Humans, Dwarves, and elves to some extent.

For what the faction you have created is, however, I will say the backstory is nice and I can see where it fits it. it's got a really interesting sense of buddhism to it, the idea of acheiving enlightenment and becoming closer to godhood through meditation and endurance. if there was a change I could make to the faction at the moment, it would be to move the roc and thunderbird down to an elite choice and have the champion be some kind of enlightened demigod, who has now become one with Slyath... or something.

However, it feels a little flat in that it is another seperatist, aloof, guidence giving race who have good intentions but are ultimately miss understood by humans because they are working on a different level. it really does feel like redoing it all over again, and with Slyath, we have a chance to really shake things all up again.

To really shake things up, I think a race who are just about running wild in a free and fickle way would be fun, and aren't about survival or honour or any higher purpose apart from just living for the moment. that is what I see as the embodiment of wind and slyath.

this is the reason why I suggested Satyrs, if we are taking this Chaotic neutral "F**k the consequences and lets just have a good time" kind of attitude that the faction could have. To them, invading a country is like a huge wild orgy of madness, where only the best of the best can get into the army to raid.

anyway.

The Bastion

the bastion was once a shining example of higher teaching and learning. developed from the humans who left the newly formed holy falcon empire, the Slyath worshippers focused on creating new devices to channel magic and to forge new weapons. the Bastion faction was once a glowing beacon of intelligence and hope.

once.

now, the bastion fallen upon it's own wild abandons. Slyath proved a much more active god than most, and began to fashion his followers into his perfect heralds. the newly formed Satyrs retain all the intelligence and culture of their forerunners, but have grown lustful and decadent, wishing to do nothing but advance their own personal pleasures and achieve perfection, be they in craftsmanship, debauchery, magic, combat or conquest. launching raids out on the myriad other races in Ashan, the Satyrs will attack noble warrior and dark conqueror alike, to sate their own manic desire to experience more, under the powerful leadership of their Castellans.

Core
Raiders
Raiders form the core of the Bastion army, having fought their way to prove that they are the strongest and most powerful satyrs there are. the more they fight, the stronger they become.
minstrels
Dismissing the minstrels of the satyrs if an unwise move, for their horns are magically forged, designed to be used as offensive weapons. when blown, the horns of the minstrels will blast hypersonic at the enemy, shattering skulls and bursting blood vessels.
??? some kind of unit with warhound, possibly???

Elite
the thunderers.
Ancient Satyrs who've managed to create magitech machines that call lightning down from the skies to smite their enemies.
the long scars
Satyrs who have traveled the world and fought for everyone and everything. now they are back with all manner of gear, stories and fighting experience.
the rocs
giant eagles that are captured and put into combat.

champion
??? some kind of giant flying monster???

generally themed around renaisance italy.

hope you like some of my ideas. feel free to fit them in where and discard what you don't want.

hmmm... you're right. we should go balls out with developing a new faction thats different from the rest. it should really stand apart in all ways.

here's how it can be different from the rest. it will be the first faction to have two major races. the satyrs and the kitsunes. the satyrs will form the might heroes and kitsunes the magic heroes. thats for starters.

why have these two races banded together? simple. the kitsunes are seeking a path of enlightment. to become ethereal. sleeping, eating all distractions. so is farming, construction, blah blah. so they have resorted to banding with a race that is semi barbaric yet in need of both structure and magic, as the satyrs have limited if no magical powers. the kitsunes are frail and in need of warriors for protections and builders, though the satyrs raid most material items instead of mining or harvesting them, return to the bastion and construct them. i see the satyrs being parallel to the mongolian hordes while the kitsunes of the italian renaissance.

so with that in mind here could be the possible lineup:

core:

1. raider-dervish
the satyrs form a core of raiders that run around pillaging what they want and these form the basic melee frontline troops. now, the kitsune monks have taken to teaching them some fighting techniques that turn the brutish satyrs into sleeker fighting machines known as the dervish (they have some martial arts training)

2. monk-elder monk
kitsune monks form the religious sect within the bastion. they are not casters but shooters. they fire bolts of wind based energy that deal damage from afar. elder monks are more powerful and may have some wind disabling magics.

3. feral boar-dire boar
giant boars are bred by the satyrs to soak up damage and act as meat shields. these creatures are clad in spiky armor and their tusks are replaced with blades they use to gore their enemies.

elite:
1. sylph-sylph archon
i'm taking the thunderer idea and applying to an air elemental creature which calls down lightning from the skies to strike their enemies. they are also fliers. these are blessings from sylath and used to augment the bastion forces.

2. seer-oracle
these are the kitsunes that have attained etherealness and are the faction's casters. made of a combination of air and ether, they are powerful magic users that can summon tornados and other wind based magics.

3. thunderer-veteran thunderer
these are the mighty satyrs that have traveled the world over and collected all manner of gear

champion
1. thunderhawk-stormhawk
i'm going to put these creatures as champions because the other three elemental dragons gave the green dragon, lava dragon and kirin. all dragon like creatures that have taken shape of their dragon god's element. so the thunderhawk prooves to be a giant bird made out of lightning and is large enough to give any of these other creatures a challenge in a fight.

what do you think?

I'm liking it.

still think the champion should be some kind of kistune whose attained enlightenment and attained the perfection, bringing the balance of satyr: kitsune ratio of units to 3:3, but it's an interesting contrast of the barbaric chaotic Satyr's and the more refined Kitsune. I kind of imagine it like a strange party, with the more drunk energetic Satyr's charging in and fighting with wild abandon, whilst the kitsune are more doing deals behind the visage of the party.

if their whole goal is to achieve perfection... why not the champion creature be just that, a kitsune who has achieved enlightenment and become one with Slyath's energy. An avatar of Slyath, who is the gods wrath on earth.

(Just a suggestion)

How about you actually take the Kitsune concept closer to their roots AND closer to the theme of Air.

Kitsune are tricksters in Japanese myth, and a mercurial and playful mindset suits them and also suits the element of air. (So more Chaotic then Order, besides we already have one faction that is devoted to Order, Necropolis.)

Consider making them leaning towards the malicious trickster to really get a more unique feeling faction, it also helps out with the flood of "good/friendly" factions Ashan already has.
Haven, Sylvan, Academy, Fortress (HV) and now Sanctuary are all factions which readily will join forces.
Leaving only Dungeon, Necropolis and Inferno for the shadier side of business, and the former two aren't too keen on the latter either.
With Stronghold taking up a nice middle ground.

Good point Mr. Dragon.

Here's the next round of units:

Core:
1. Wind Dancer-Wind Dervish
Satyrs who have augmented their combat skills with Sylath's wind dancing martial arts to turn themselves into disciplined, cunning warriors.
2. Skymonk-Elder Skymonk
Kitsune ranged units/casters who use strike using magical bolts and can conjure wind based spells to impede their enemies.
3. Sylph-Sylph Tempest
Elemental air creatures that look like the sprites from HOMM5 but are composed entirely of air, smoke and fog.

Elite:
1. Cloudsteed Archer-Cloudstallion Archer
Kitsunes who are mounted on horse-like creatures that are made of air in the same manner as the nightmares of the HOMM5 inferno were made out fire.
2. Thunderhawk-Stormhawk
Elemental birds made completely out of lightning. shrieks with the sound of thunder that deafens enemy combatants.
3. Thunderer-Rampager
The most powerful of satyr warriors that have been blessed by sylath, turning them into gargantuas monstrous ground soldiers.

Champion
1. Archon-Avatar
These kitsunes have finally reached their ethereal form and are powerful creatures in combat. they exist half in the real world and half in the void(elemental plane of air)

I am personally working on a Human based Ylath faction based on the human nomadic heritage.

More east among the free cities there are still some human tribes living by there nomadic tradition and worshiping Ylath.
They are mostly merchants and hunters whit no really organization and or country.

The cultural inspiration for them would by from pagan Celtic and Slavic tribes.

Unites:
Core:

Mercenaries/Freelancers:
Basic guards of all races that the merchants hire to guard their caravans.

Falconer/Eagle master
A range unite based on the factions loyalty to Ylath. They do small damage but have no range penalty and unlimited shoots.

Guard dog/War dog
Fast and furiose unit with some ally helping abilities.

Elite
Seer/Oracle
Magic unit with range attack, soekks and abilities based on fortunetelling

War wagon/Battle wagon (Image of hussit wagon used in aprox. 1420)
The merchant cravens consist of many wagons, some of them constructed to work as shelters or guard posts. This unit has an attack bonus towards small unites and defense bonus towards large units, is a natural barrier to shooters and when 2 or more are standing next to each other, all can activate at the same time to move as an caravan. This unite cannot attack the same turn it has moved.

3rd elite under construction

Champion
Storm hawk/Thunderbird
Flayer with lightning strike

I personally prefer Dave's approach on Ylath's faction, but would make it not pagan Celtic and Slavic but nomadic Mongolian (since Orcs in H6 are going for Aztec) with our beloved Rogues and Nomads + Falconer as Core creatures. Add Pegasi riders, War Chariots and some casters for Elite and ofc Thunderbirds as Champions and you have a cool, fast, flier dominant faction.

I also have to say I adore Blister's "Kitsune striving for perfection through etherealness" concept, so maybe have Kitsunes instead of normal humans for the creatures Dave (and myself) proposed.

I am working on a backstory at the moment using the same format as the other factions. Just fleshing out the details at the moment.

While I love Dave-Jame's idea of utilizing the free cities as worshipers of the Dragon of Air, for me personally, I really rather not use another faction's that made of humans. There are already three of them (including Necro). That's why I wanted to go another way. Using a beastial race. Or in this case races.

Regarding order, the Bastion faction's internal politics is based on order. The kitsunes are on top of the hierarchy while the satyrs form the workforce and brutish armies. But externally, they operate very much on chaos, taking what they want, pillaging and marauding. This is because the kitsunes control this faction internally while the satyrs are in charge of their dealings with the outside world. so needless to say the satyrs decided to use brute force instead of cunning. the satyrs also may have been misled to believe that they are in charge. still working on the details...

I understand why you would prefer a central Asian theme. (Kazachstan, Mongolia, even Turkey) but These theme is covered by the northern orc tribes as you mentioned.
(we have  Mongolin in the north, Aztec in the east and I would guess central farican for the south)

I have chosen celtic/slavic for 3 reasons
1: If the haven faction (elrath) stands for catholic europe the Ylath could stand for pre-catholic europ (Slavic/celtic since Norse should be reserved for Dwarves)
2: These cultures are often overlooked even thou they have interesting idols to offer
3: I'm not a big fan of the pompous look of haven and I would like to see a more dark

@SBlister:
to be honest,I don't like the line-ups of your faction.
Not only do I think you overuse some creature species(the kitsune and satyrs),but I also think, that it would look quite odd to have kitsune and satyrs in one faction.
And Kitsune also don't match the air-theme as kitsune are most often associated with fire not air,so the kamaitachi would fit the faction more, because the kamitachi is a trio of weasels who ride on the wind and attack the enemy with sharp claws(sometimes they are also depicted using sickles, because the name kamaitachi means sickle weasel.
