Well... the free trial isn't of interest to me anymore... Oh well. Haha. I, for one, am sincerely excited to play this game! I think playing co-op with my friend will be super enjoyable and a great way to relax once a week or so. It seems like there's a lot of negativity about the game on this board. Is anyone here also really excited? The release day is tomorrow!!!

Again: terrible release date.

I'll get it probably somewhere in the summer. Perhaps even after that.

Diablo 3 >> life, and I don't want to lose a nice summer to a computer game

when it gets cold, why not.

Error 37 - servers are busy.

What a snowing surprise.

Why must they make online mandatory?

It even kicks you out of the game when the servers are busy and you have to continue back from the last waypoint. Utterly ridicilous.

The game is marvellous on the other hand. Really beautiful. But online **** is a real *****

A good game. Beautiful, a great feeling, good voice acting and some good new ideas for the gameplay - but in the end of the day - it is like D2 Same recipe

but only at act 2

First impressions:

- Blizzard servers managed to handle the D-Day load... barely and with an emergency maintenance. It's always cool to play a single-player game constantly connected to Internet... In other news the reactions of the most impatient would-be-world-saviours when the servers opened maybe 10 minutes later than scheduled for some people (due to the horrendous amount of people re-entering their Battle.net credentials for the N-th time in attempt to start playing) was hilarious - refunds, curses and so on...

- Act I is a tutorial, pure and simple. If you are careful enough, you won't even have to drink potions - not even once, including against the final boss. Still, it's better than Act I on Diablo II which is nothing short of incredibly boring - at least this time you can watch nice death animations and stuff...

- Act II is at least 10 times better than Act I for now, unsurprisingly. The difficulty is still low but certain types of enemies require a bit more than staying in the centre of the massacre and clicking on everything around you until it dies (I play Monk, so far he's good at killing by clicking randomly ).

- I don't get where's the character design part? Maybe I'm missing something, but you can't change the attributes of your hero - they increment on their own at level up (pre-defined values probably) and you seem to have access to ALL skills (each of which gets unlocked after reach certain level). The choice is which skill to equip and which upgrade (rune, blah) to apply to it before equipping. Looks a bit cheap and a quite a bit automated.

- The story-telling and the atmosphere creation on the other hand is clearly superior to any previous Diablo on the other hand. There's still no real dialogue of course but the interactable NPCs are at least twice more than in Diablo II, they speak quite a lot (for a Diablo game that is) and your "companions" have quite a few lines of their own. It's also nice that your own character has finally learned to express his thoughts verbally, although you won't find any pearls of wisdom among them.
Speaking of the "companions" - they have some personality, actually more than I expected, and one may even begin to like some of them. The Templar in particular is a Space Marine with an amnesia and if it wasn't for his habit to praise your incredible skills, valour and honour every few bloody minutes, maybe he would have been my favourite distraction-and-damage-soaking puppet.

Enough for today, more tomorrow.

I have only managed to play 2 hours so far, but not only because of the servers, but because of the time school demands of me. I have faith that I can both study and play D3, silly I know right?

Anyways, can't wait for tonight when I have time to play more. The game is awesome so far, though my biggest beef so far is the field of view, I want more! (and the graphics are kinda cartoonish... (Of course I already knew about that, I just didn't wanna know. Luckily it wont kill me))

Who needs it? In the end the "correct way" of getting attributes is found anyway (like in DiabloII: all in VIT, Titan Quest: 1 dex 1 str per level up). It might as well be automated to spare people the screwed up characters that turn garbage after the "best way" of increasing stats is found.

As for skills, I never understood the moaning that you have all of them. It just spares you the extremely annoying part where you have to go through the abysmally-boring storyline for the 90435020583th time just to see how another skill works. Wow, what a cruel game, eh?

The thing is that there isn't much to do except switching between skills. Moreover, it reminds me of the Heroes VI philosophy of "get rid of it completely, don't bother fixing it". A minor part of this is supposed to be a RPG - as much as any hack 'n slash game can be a RPG - but now it looks like an arcade. I'm not really complaining though - Diablo has never been a complex game. However, there's an obvious trend the game designers to protect you against your own mistakes like mother goose by reducing the choices that you can make in-game - and what if I want to be allowed to make mistakes?

Well, I don't want to, so they have to do a coin toss between those wanting and those not wanting to do mistakes

And I'm kinda happy they picked this scenario.

You can never please both sides, mind you.

Oh, but you can, if you want to. Using the Monk as an example, you can link half of his fighting techniques to Strength, the other half to Dexterity, the mantras and the other spiritual **** to Intelligence and given that you'll always need Vitality for a predominantly melee character - there you have at least 3 possible "pure" builds with another few combos between them, increasing the attributes manually makes sense again and spending skill points is back in the game. It only requires balancing and Blizzard are not as lazy as some other companies when it comes to balancing their games*.

*By the way there are balancing issues even now, naturally, so they have to sort such problems no matter if 90% of the leveling system automated or not. For 20 levels I haven't found a reason to change the secondary skill of my Monk to something different from the roundhouse kick - it's perfect for crowd control, costs little Spirit, deals pretty good damage and there are primary skills which can be used against shooters, i.e. the only class of enemies against which it's better to use something else.

You can get those builds right now too. By switching skills. Is the fact the other skills are unavailable to the player that great? I never understood the "choice" system of H&S games. Imho it sucks and all boils down to the fact that there's always a best skill for every class and the rest are decoration.

So why not allow people to freely use the decoration as they please, if they desire some sort of change from the cookie cutter build?

I think they did the right thing here.

Because it's lazy from both player's and developer's perspective and creates a feeling that the game is treating you like and imbecile. In the end you'll again have the same build all over the place (for those who care to create Ze Ultimate Badass, I personally don't) and I may want to make my own, no matter that it may be inferior to the others.

And what's stopping you from making "your own" build right now? the fact that the other skills you happen to be not using aren't grayed out?

Zero customization? How can I create "my" hero when the game is auto-generating and auto-modifying his stats and skills and my only intervention is to choose between the offered universally available skills and the maybe not-so-universally available loot? Actually the logical next step will be to auto-equip the items which are best suited for your character, essentially disposing of the Inventory, because, really, who needs Intelligence-boosting helm on a Barbarian? Should this be implemented as well?
Here's an example: in Diablo 1 I had a Warrior purposefully leveled to have ridiculously high Strength and just as ridiculously low Vitality. A real kamikaze, in other words - killing the vast majority of the monsters in two hits at most with pretty unimpressive gear and getting killed in no time when swarmed. Sure, it was hardly the most efficient build, but it was nice to try it. I've also tried a Warrior with spells - yes, Intelligence is capped at 45 and the casting speed is terrible compared to the Sorceror but with some items I managed to learn Fireball and cast it a few times during each battle - with mediocre results but it was still fun to try. Why should it matter that the optimal Warrior build is centred on Strength and Vitality + occasional Dexterity increases - I've done that as well, killed 'em all without breaking a sweat, so?
In short - why shouldn't I be allowed to create a character with stats and skills of my choosing? Like I said, if you link certain ability to certain attribute and allow them to be increased manually, the potential combinations become much more and it's far more likely to create a character who is at least somewhat "unique".
