They seem to have already resolved this

Quote:
Q: How is the Necromancer different from the Witch Doctor?

A: The Necromancer and Witch Doctor are quite different in both theme and play style!

Witch Doctors draw their magic from their spiritual connection to a realm they call the Unformed Land. This more light-hearted take on supernatural powers allows them to command creepy crawly denizens of the jungle and summon mindless zombified pets.

Necromancers can expect darker, more controlled gameplay centered around the raw materials of life: blood and bone. Grounded in a philosophical, pragmatic approach to life and death, they’re more like a calculated conductor of the darkest arts. Deadly serious in their practice, they are the experts of curses and reanimation—and their pets obey their every command.

(Diablo 2 stuff)
While I find the necromancer theme in diablo 2 to be the best among the characters, I find the character itself the most boring sadly. In my opinion he lacks diversity, "if you have played one necromancer you have seen them all" kind of thing.

The necromancer in diablo 2 has only few really good curses for solo play that every type of necromancer probably would want to some degree.
Then there is the spell caster vs. the summoner.
The summoner can only have 1 golem, but there are really only 2 golems to choose from, and one of them is only if you have the items to spare, so it's more like there is 1.1 golems. Further more, with the broken AI and the extremely low damage compared to hp of monsters, revive is only useful for crushing blow making it more or less as useful as teeth is to a high level bonemancer, not to mention revives disappears extremely easy if you don't have teleport. This means there is only one minion for the summoner and that is the skeleton, making the majority of summoners pretty much identical.
On the other hand the spell caster really only has 2 paths to choose from, and one of them have only two offensive spells where you'll use one much more than the other, and the other path only really has one. Compare this to e.g. the sorcerers that has multiple paths in each elemental tree, or the Druid that has two paths in his single elemental tree.

Finally more or less every necromancer can improve himself using corpse explosion making the few varieties seem and play even more alike.

Now this criticism goes for many character classes of diablo 2, so it is not only this that makes the necromancer seem boring to me, and it is probably more of a personal thing regarding playstyle. Btw. if one decided to include older versions of the game, the necromancer will be different, not more fun, but it is at least another version of the necromancer (Blood Golem + Iron Maiden).

--------

I have not heard much good about diablo 3 and it is not a game I'm intending on trying, but I hope this character will be better than his diablo 2 counterpart.

The necromancer does have the most awesome Diablo2 spell though, corpse explosion So satisfying. And if you stick to players1, it's pretty much a screen-cleaner as well.

I made a few overpowered characters on battle.net, but my skelemancer would always come on top. He was hard to best with that ridiculous spike damage (enigma -> teleport on top of an enemy = all skeletons attack the target simultanously = huge damage when enemy is cursed) and ridiculous screen-cleaning speeds of corpse explosion while being extremely safe due to the skeletons tanking stuff for you.

My necro topped hammerdins and javazons alike. I'm really surprised that for PvM, he never got proper respect for being overpowered. Instead, people hyped Hammerdins. I guess they were biased because hammerdins were popular? Well, they were popular because they made good bots, not because they were that great per se.

But let's be honest here, most gamers are slightly (or highly) clueless when it comes to power gaming. Like people that complained about crushing prison in Dragon Age, and actually whined loud enough that the devs nerfed the spell. Nobody noticed that Paralysis Explosion was like 10 times better haha.

I liked the diablo II necromancer, in fact it was the one class I enjoyed the most (2nd place goes to paladin). As about only having 2 options, well, most classes are pretty much limited if you want to make a very solid build. Most golems suffered from crappy scaling compared to skeletons, as well as being limited to only 1 golem at once, generally a necro needs golems for its special rather than for tanking or damage. Summoner was a pretty fun build to play with, no matter the passivity, it's just fun to have 20+ skeletons then corpse exploding your way.

Also except for some unique abilities, revives are just bloody good for tanking, they got a ton of hp and a summoner will just use corpse explosion to cause damage. Bonemancer was again a pretty nice build, bone spear is just Godly and you got some other assets to play with, even if they aren't that powerful, bone armor is always nice to have. As for fun builds, I even made a poisonmancer, it's all fun and games, until you bump into a poison immune monster, and you will meet plenty of them in Hell difficulty, if the damage type would be more varied, it could work pretty well, just that poison explosion pales in comparison with corpse explosion. As for curses, they are more utility than defining a build, I found amplify damage and decrepify worthwhile, while lower resist may work for a poisonmancer (if it was more reliable)

Anyway, those short outcomes are why I like MedianXL mod, you can make even make builds like melee necro, ranged necro, aside from the classic summon necro. And the abilities also scale a lot better, ofc other classes got more goodies to play with too, together with better scaling and an overall increased difficulty (if you don't mind the epilepsy inducing spell effects ).

True, but poisonmancer has a lot of leftover points after finishing poison nova & synergies. You may easily fit both of those spells together, they work nicely. If you can give a powerful weapon to an act2 merc, he+amp damage can quickly net you a kill vs. poison immune monsters and you can CE the rest.

What somewhat hindered the poisonmancer was boss killing. Killing even the regular Baal was kinda slow. Doing ubers, I pretty much fell asleep. Definitively not a boss runner.

Just 1 point into corpse explosion and 1 into revives, then gear will boost them up, I always liked this as you don't have to max them out to be powerful. For boss killings as a poisonmancer you can add some gorebellies into the mix for crushing blow, or making an iron golem or giving your merc a weapon with it.

Yeah in the latest patch corpse explosion and lightning fury are probably the two most powerful spells. I personally prefer lightning fury.
Lightning fury was also powerful in v.1.07, but in a different way, as it was the fastest way to transfer crushing blow that would remove 50% of enemies current health with each trigger.
Corpse explosion is even more powerful in 1.00 where it works identical except it scales with amount of players and has twice the range it has from what I think is 1.03 or 1.04 and forward, in 1.00 the two most powerful skills are whirlwind with its 25 hits pr. sec. and corpse explosion. E.g. with some of the best gear you could take down Diablo in 1-2 ww's in Hell.

I prefer the super-big radius a 30point CE offers.

It's not like necromancers have that many useful skills anyway

True except for the bonemancer, but in 1.10 you could wear the Marrowalk boots and save 20 skill points and have a more powerful bone spear/spirit than anything following v.1.10.

Really a shame they removed charged item synergy as long as you don't invest in the skill, it allowed for some interesting builds and vindicated a lot of almost useless items, iIRC.

Speaking about charges, something I only learned recently when looking at twinking gear is that it is possible to have a wand/head with 135 lvl 10 teeth charges and without any level requirement (only for necromancers though).

Lol, just accidentally entered "Not the Cow Level" after killing a Blood Shards Goblin. I didn't really look at what I've got, but I'm sure there was a Legendary two-hand sword and a Legendary Chest Armor after killing the cows (the armor from one Radiant Chest).

Is Monk most like the Paladin as opposed to all the other classes? I mean, would I be able to easily adapt to using it?

For anyone who was bitterly disappointed in Diablo III, I advice picking up any of these games:

- Dungeon Siege 2: Broken World (+ Legendary Mod)
- Titan Quest: Anniversary Edition (+ 6-player mod)
- Torchlight 2 (+ Synergies mod)
- Diablo II (+ Median XL mod)
