That's a letdown. Even though I will be playing online all the time, I'm annoyed at this.

Why?

Putting the obvious things aside (people who like SP just got screwed), there's the issue of not being able to use a character editor to check different stuff like you could do in diablo II. you know, test some exotic build offline before you start gathering the gear for it online? that alone bought me a good dozen hours on Diablo II. Shame it's no longer an option.

They are also disallowing all modding of the game.

Also they have an auction house to sell items for real money, they get a cut. That's probably part of why they have the stupid DRM, probably to keep the "auction" part online so people in single player can buy and sell items.

Edit: Rob Pardo of Blizzard has said of the DRM:

Quote:
"I want to play Diablo 3 on my laptop in a plane, but, well, there are other games to play for times like that"

Of course he can't openly criticize it, so he's basically saying "Our games are unsuitable for people who travel, don't buy our stuff!"

Blizzard goes too far. It's obvious - for the sake of more sold copies and anti-piracy they put in action DRM, not for cheaters. Many fans will be disappointed and won't buy the game (including me). What about the people that have bad internet - low speed or crushing connection. It'll be annoying to replay a quest thousand times.

*Sigh*

I liked the old days where you bought a game and that was it - transaction completed.  I don't like DLC, DRM, or any of that crap.  Aside from critical patches, I wish the Internet and games would go their separate ways.

Does that make me an old fogey?

Diablo 3 is now Assassin's Creed 2 basically.

It has DRM that Requires an always on connection even in single player.

This is the same reason we never got Starcraft 2 and now the reason we'll never buy Diablo 3. (Also lack of LAN play.)

I seriously don't believe that any of you who loved Diablo 2 will not buy Diablo 3. No reason can make any Diablo 2 fan not to buy Diablo 3. But of course I'm also sick of this DRM issues. But they seem essensial to stop hinder piracy.

It neither stops, nor hinders piracy. Cracked games are released to torrent mainstream even before the official release. DRM or not.

It just costs the company money to get one (which can be used i.e. for beta testing and less bugged releases) and causes annoyance for legal users. Pirates don't care as usual.

I seriously don't understand why do they even bother with anti-piracy methods like that when it does absolutely nothing at all.

It's funny, I just read through eleven articles and the relevant comments on this subject, and in every single one there is at least one person who makes the exact same claim.

I can't understand this issue. How can stopping piracy be that difficult? Where do they find the cracked games before the release?

They steal them from the company's buildings at night?

Because Diablo 2 is such a marvellous game, and the people who loved it love the game in no other fashion they love other games that they cannot resist the curiosity about the 3rd. I'm one of these people and nothing would stop me from buying it. I even look at my friends and think "They have not played Diablo 2. What kind of a life is that?!" and feel sorry for them (Yeah, none of my real life friends like video games. None! )

The game is not even Diablo any longer. There are NO skill points and skills can be swapped out in town freely, so there are no actual character "builds." Plus long cooldowns on some skills. They want to force you to use a number of differnt skills in each battle and to have different skills for bosses and for crowds of monsters. Every character is going to be a generic type character that plays the way Blizzard wants the character class to play rather than how the player would like to play.

Play one way while fighting to get to the boss (like the Worldstone Keep levels in D2) portal back to town and respec your skills for the boss fight. That makes me want to puke. They've destroyed the game.

The moronic requirement of having to be online all the time you play and the Auction House seals the deal for me. No D3. There is still a lot of life in D2 for me and of course I've only scratched the surface of the D2 Median mod.

This is entirely the opposite way around.

There are five runes you can attach to each skill each of which completely changes the skill in its own way. And there are 30-32 skills for every class but you can only choose 7 among them. And you can only put one rune to a skill. This makes 224 different skills from which you can only choose 7!

And there are the traits you choose I don't know how many. So actually, they have taken the character built and variety even further than Diablo 2.

You just want to see the negative side where there is a massive positive side.

Also, for every character which stats are essential is obvious in Diablo 2. I dont think a sorceress would put more points in her strenght than her energy, if done she wouldn't be able to kill Duriel at even 100 attempts. So this "no skill points to put freely" doesn't affect the character variety at all.

Since when did changing equipment become customizing a character? Sorry, but finding a new sword or a new rune is not "customization." I am not "customizing" myself when I change my underwear.

Quote:

Sorry, dude, but your information is old. They have further limited players to 6 skills. And NO skill points. Let us say you are playing a sorceress and chose the hydra spell. That is that. No more putting points into the spell/skill, your hydra is as powerful as it is ever going to be except for any increase in power you get from changing your underwear equipment.

Quote:

Uh, the "traits" are passives and will pretty much mandated based on what build type you want. Of course those can be swapped out at will at any time and so can hardly be called "traits."

No, you can swap out all your skills for free anytime you want. In town or out of town, though they are thinking about limiting swapping out skills to only in town for nightmare and hell mode. Currently you can do it on the fly, in town or out of town. There are NO builds. That is not rpgish at all.

Don't make statements like that or I'll be inclined to make statements that will make a mod want to penalize me. YOU CAN'T READ MY MIND. YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT I WANT. I was looking forward to Diablo3, and I am very much an optimist. But facts are facts. And the recently revealed facts have pushed me away from D3.

DUDE, they have not only REMOVED ALL ATTRIBUTE POINTS (strength, dex, energy, ect) but they have REMOVED ALL SKILL POINTS TOO. No attribute points. No skill points.

Diablo 3 has been massively dumbed down.

Diablo 3: Dumb and Dumber.

Oh, being limited to only 10 character slots for the lifetime of the game sucks. As does having to have all of your characters, even single player characters, stored online (and no separate single player and multiplayer slots.) And the requirement to be connected to battlenet 100% of the time even when playing single player sucks too.

They are not equipment. They are solid objects only symbolically but actually are attributes for your skills and change the whole skill and turn it into a new one. So that's calling skills as "underwears"

But about the skill points, I have just heard they are removed as I follow things on Diablowiki and they still show the skill points are present in the game. Skills on Diablowiki Jay Wilson tells why they removed the skill points in this video but I can't understand anything he says. He just starts the sentences normally but then chews the rest of the sentences in his mouth.

The games obviously get distributed to shops some time before release. It's not hard for a shop worker to snatch a copy for himself. And from there the copy ends up in the web, where professional groups like Razor1911 and skidrow get it and work on the system to crack it asap.

Stopping piracy is impossible because it's easier to break a lock than to make a lock.

Battle.net alone however is the best anti-piracy feature EVER. I don't think blizzard needs anything else.

As for the whole "dumbed down" stuff... well, I have mixed feelings towards it. Truth is, majority of D2 skills were useless. For some characters, there was pretty much two-three builds that worked and that's it, which consisted of several skills. So it's pretty much the same here. Just simplified, but I wouldn't really call it "dumbed down" since D2 wasn't exactly brilliant on that matter.

Oh and Elodin... in case you're not up to date: they added respecialization in Diablo 2 in patch 1.13

Actually, there is no single player campaign for Diablo 3. In D3 you can multiplay through the campaign or just play the campaign by yourself. You can start off solo in the campaign, then form a party to kill an act boss, then play solo for a while and later party again.

@Doom

Yesh, I know 1.13 added respecs. I'm not a fan of respecs in rpgs as they make no sense. In 1.13 you get one respec per difficulty level from the Den quest. And you can put together tokens of absolution from the essences of Act bosses.

D3 has no respecs. You can just swap out skills at will even during the middle of a battle. And they still want to call it a rpg. Heh.
