I live in a SICK society!

I'm serious, I'm sick and tired of it, tired of it and sick.

I do my own groceries every week and every two to three weeks I am faced with the daunting task of buying another load of vegetables. I buy food just for myself and I don't have a car or a cart pulled by a mule, which I think the local supermarket should provide me, if they intend to keep on doing what they're doing.

I have one (pretty big) bag with which to carry everything on my back. Having other bags are a liability, because the way my residence is constantly uphill at quite an angle.

Anyway, I think the people from delhaize (local supermarket, overall cheapest in the neighbourhood) (though, Belgium is like the home of white collar crime and stupidity, because our supermarkets don't engage in price war, because they know Belgians don't go to the cheapest one) like to eff with me or something, because this infuriates me and they must know:
A bag of 5 kilograms of potatoes is cheaper than a bag of 2.5 kilograms. No, I don't mean something lame, like "I pay 80 cents per kilo for one and 90 for the other." No, I mean that the total price is significantly lower.
What kind of SICK society charges DOUBLE THE PRICE for HALF THE WEIGHT?
3 euros for a bag of 2.5 kilos and 1.50 for 5 kilos (Numbers have been rounded, because we all know 2.99 is 3). This means one asks 30 cents per kilo and the other 120 cents. That's four times the price.

And THEY KNOW I can't carry 5 kilos on top of all the other products I buy to sustain myself during the week, so I buy the ones of 2.5. It's more expensive, because they've been labeled "bio," which I don't care about. And they don't sell non-bio stuff, except the huge bag of 5 kilos.

And that's not the only thing. Same thing with onions. I repeatedly have to buy two kilos of onions and throw away more than half of them in two weeks, because again they're half the price of 500 grams. Any society in which it's cheaper to buy something in four times the quantity and throw away half is sick and rotten, I tell you.

Seriously, Belgium, what the hell?

Is it just that you know that all your costumers are hipster college students with too much money to burn and have to travel by bike? I seriously don't get you.

Yes since my husband died we don't have a car anymore so I order the main part of my groceries online and get them delivered. I use the local shop just for bread, milk and other bits I may need inbetween the main shop as it is expensive and like you said you have to carry it home.

Second - don't you guys have a "deliver your groceries home system in supermarkets" ? If not, think of it as an idea for a business and act upon it

Third, stop being a baby
Also, you're telling me to stop being a baby after proposing the least masculine solution ever. And no there is no grocery delivery service, which is a remnant of our ancient tribal roots in which letting someone carry your food was a huge risk and an insult to Belgicae pride.

EDIT: Oh, puhlease! How can I steer my bike AND carry grocery bags in my hands?

With your feeds!

No seriously I have seen it as well. Not that I can't carry puny 5 kilograms on top of another puny 10 kilograms while biking.. it's rather that I don't eat very much. And no one will help me! So if I buy a 5 kg bag, I'm gonna throw away 4 kg and 500 gram, cause it's gonna go bad before I eat more than that. If I buy a 2.5 kg bag, I can throw away less.

Easy, you hang the groceries on the bike bar. Just make sure to balance them evenly.

Oh, look at all you supermen!

Come on, guys, just let me be angry at this ludicrous system, okay?
Also, I have puny bike with low handles, so hanging them there will make em drag over the ground, which makes the uphill thing even less enjoyable.. Next year I'll have manly bike which doesn't threaten to fall to pieces every second, which I'll buy with my summer job money, though.

Go shop two times a week. That way you won't have to carry so much.

HAPPY TIMES!

No, just that yeah, I know the solutions and I decide to do things the manly way. I just think this whole thing is retarded.
And I vent on HC, because no one would visit my blog, if I had one.

True that

Well, stuff that might help you. Get-, or sew a bag yourself. That you focus the weight on your back makes it much easier. Further more, it helps in the sense that you know can use both hands and your back.
Depending on your bike, get a box in front and a box in the back. This will also help a lot.

Also like AD says, buy twice a week. Seriously, if I bought once a week, I'd be at huge risk of the food I want not being there! Further more it means I get to carry less and it's more enjoyable being outside!

The best solution though is to hire a sex slave and then just use him for groceries! THat's so awesoe!!

I don't know, can't you just buy the 5 kilo one and then dump half of it outside of the store.
Sure it wouldn't fix your "sick society" but it would make you save money.

I don't know Caroline Gennez and Clouseau doesn't interest me.

Let me make it clear that I'm as estranged from Belgium as one can be. I didn't even know who Wouter Weylandt was when he died.

Meroe, you don't tire your bicep carrying stuff .. it works your forearm and trapezius (neck). Anyway, I carry stuff home from the grocery store and I have no choice really. I live 10-15 minute walk away and often buy 10kg worth of stuff (+++) .. but you don't hear me complaining now do you? Get yourself some regular plastic bags and keep on carrying. That's just the way the world is, live with it.

Jesus Christ, man, find someone to share the freaking groceries with! That way, you can share the weight as well.
If three random Russians can meet and build a troika in their noon break to share half a litre of Vodka, you'll surely be able to find another person to share your onions and potatoes with.
