well in case you don't remember I don't think highly of LoTR mainly because the characters were bland and one dimensional..

LoTR however didn't have a storyline that was bad. For most parts it was quite well-thought. I must admit that

You're right but something that most readers do not know is that writing a modern book was not JRRT's purpose. Except for the Ents, Black-riders (I think) and his version of what Elves are like (they were little sprites before him)."all that he wrote was rehash' because he was putting the many story-telling ideas he had learned from historic fantasy and also the study of "word-origins" into his myth. His main purpose was to have a place to use his two invented Elvin languages. Years ago I thought it "all" came out of his imagination and cussed him because he took all the "good stuff". Btw, many writers have thought the very same.

<imo>One great result of his vague characters and not writing great details about them: people create in their minds their own images of each. Sort of like olde scary movies when you were really scared but only imagining what the monster looked like.

But I know that since 1954, folks have either loved or hated the book and that will not change. Hope you have better luck with yours.

Good topic Doom...<IMO> QP
