Mr.Dragon's Citadel Faction (Created seperate art folder 26-05 update)

Citadel

“The only thing that is eternal is change, Chaos above all!”

Sheogh is home to more then firey chasms and sulfurous vents, high on the plateu's of it's mountains above the clouds that surge through it's crimson sky is a wasteland of a very different nature.
The Crystal Wastes, shadowy vales and jagged wastelands dotted with formations of crystalized magic spewed forth by the firey depths below. Whilst inhospitible in it's own right, most of Sheogh's slaves reside here, dwelling within and overseen by ominous spires of blackened steel.
It is here that the task masters of Sheogh, various cruel and spiteful demons, impose dark punishment upon those who hail from Ashan above, there where those who imprison Demon kind are instead the prisoners. They work in quarries and mines supplying the armies of Sheogh with iron, stone and other supplies.
The armies of these vile fortresses thrive on the essence of chaos itself, their bodies warping to the constant flow of magic and delighting in inflicting such state upon others.
They utterly detest all life that lives upon Ashan, hating them and their gods for sealing them within Sheogh, they desire nothing less then to dominate and enslave those who imprisoned them.

In a nutshell:
The Citadel is another demonic army, one that prefers more subtle and disruptive tactics though then sheer offensive power. Their tactics are cruel and designed to cripple their opponents.
Whilst also demonic, they are much more contained in many ways emotionaly but in doing so their chaotic nature manifests in a different way, it brings their bodies in a constant state of flux and upon the battlefield it slowly strengthens and transforms them.

Inspiration:
The narrow concept of Ashan's Demons, various demons of myth and various myths about the afterlife, specifically hells.

Associated colours: Black, Dark Blue, Cyan
Aka: "Soldiers of Sheogh" "Black Legion" "Urgash' Fury"
Symbols: A blue flame behind iron bars.
Worship: Urgash
Core Philosophy: "Chaos grants us the power of vengeance."
Country / Kingdom: Crystal Wastes of Sheogh.
Capital City: Ur-Tarrus 'The Dark Vault'
Art Folder: Project Citadel Art

Architecture:
Smooth steel structures, polished and decorated with blades or spikes of ebon coloured steel, steel spikes like prison bars erected upon the walls and in front of windows.
The buildings are despite their polished exteriors, erratic in shape, turrets and walkways turning even the exteriors into labyrinthine dungeons.
The ground floors are illuminated with crimson fires providing heat and illumination for the slaves but the higher floors are aglow with the blue flames of magic from many crystaline torches and in the air dance wisps of similar flames to the winds of Chaos.

Citadel Strategy: "Every enemy has a weakness to exploit, and if it doesn't, we'll just give it one."

* Strengths: Armies grow stronger during battle, abilities that are aimed at reducing the effectiveness of opponent's troops.
* Weaknesses: Most units have a serious weakness or two.
* Racial ability: Eldritch Bindings Target enemy creature loses all it's special abilities for a full round of combat.

Hero Classes.

Might base class:
Dread Knight

Art: This is the FEMALE version, she does not have boob-shaped chest armor, the male version I will not draw, looks a bit like her but is broader mostly and has a flatter chest guard made out of two plates instead of a dome shaped single plate.
Ability: Might of Chaos Whenever a stack under this hero's command uses a special ability that alters it's stats or damage dealt/received or the stats of another creature, the nearest enemy to that stack takes damage based on the hero's level, if more then one stack are tied for nearest, the damage is spread across these stacks instead.

Magic base class:
Dream Eater

Art: This is the male version, I will not draw the female version, roughly the opposite story of my description on the female Dread Knight.
Ability: Siphoning Chaos Whenever a stack under this hero's command uses a special ability that alters it's stats or damage dealt/received or the stats of another creature, the hero gains 1 mana.

Core Units:

Talon Fiend -> Eurynomous

These dark creatures are former mortal slaves that have "earned their freedom", even Demons, in their own twisted way, believe in redeeming one self, a particulairly loyal and useful slave has the potential to ascend into Demonhood and become the Slavers instead of the Slaves.
As proof of their servitude they are granted a weapon by the master smiths of their citadel which is grafted in a painful ritual to their molten flesh, granting them great accuracy and precision with it.

Root: Greek Demon of the same name.
Abilities:
Hardening Skin (Basic & Upgrade)
Eurynomous' charcoal black hides are thick and tough, giving it 20% damage reduction against all melee damage, in addition, whenever damaged in melee this reduction increases by 5% up to a maximum of 50% (Talon Fiend) and 70% (Eurynomous).
Fist of Chaos (Basic & Upgrade)
As an alternative attack, instead of using it's grafted steel blade the Eurynomous can pierce it's opponent's defenses with it's massive barbed fist, this attack deals significantly reduced damage but ignores the opponent's Defense by 50% (basic) completely (upgrade). (so it's very effective against foes with high defense but the normal attack is better versus enemies with lower defenses.)

Tatzelwurm -> Warpwurm

These faul serpents gorge themselves on the crystaline formations found in the wastes around Sheogh's mountains, their bile is laced with potent magic and are respected by Demons as manifestations of Urgash' warping power.
They are easily coerced into combat and are feared by their enemies for their ability to completely dismantle enemy formations.

Root: Cryptid animal.
Abilities:
Shooter (Basic & Upgrade)
Breath of Chaos (Basic & Upgrade)
As an alternative melee attack, once per battle the Tatzelwurm can breath a cloud of vile magic that causes confusion and panic to those caught in it.
Enemy stacks caught in the cloud (3x3) move up their movement in a random direction and take damage equal to half the Tatzelwurm's normal attack.
Bile Orb (upgrade)
The Warpwurm can use the Breath of Chaos ability at range once per battle in addition to the usual melee version.

Baku -> Baku Devourer

What is the difference between the fears of normal men and wizards?
Man fears the Nightmare, Wizards fear the Baku.
These foul spirits dwell within Sheogh but are known for their ability to escape it on a whim to hunt through the ethereal realms beyond Sheogh, hunt for the Dreams of wizards, after all magic is only as potent as the imagination of it's wielder, drained from their hopes and dreams even the mightiest archmage would have trouble formulating their spell.
When driven before the armies of Sheogh's Citadels, these beasts go into a frenzy with the prospect of so much to feast upon, lying in wait and will fight with reckless abandon to devour all the magic they can find.

Root: Oriental demon/spirit, usually portrayed with a large trunk, but I chose to give it a large tongue instead, gives it a similar silhouette.
Abilities:
Mana Power (basic & upgrade)
The Baku gains a bonus to it's Attack equal to the amount of mana it has, Baku start with 0/12 mana, Baku Devourers start with 0/20 mana. (presuming based on screenshots that Attack scales in much higher numbers then it used too)
Dream Eater (basic & upgrade)
Whenever a Baku attacks an enemy unit with the caster ability or is otherwise strongly magical in nature (like elementals) the Baku gains 2 mana and the victim if it has any, loses 1 mana.
Dream Siphon (basic & upgrade)
Whenever a Baku starts it's turn adjecent to an ally with a magic debuff or enemy with a magic buff, it drains 1 turn from the spell's duration (to a minimum of 1 turn remaining) and gains 1 mana.
Devour Magic (upgrade)
Whenever a spell is cast within 3 squares of a Baku Devourer the Baku gains 1 mana, if the spell was cast by an enemy creature or hero it loses spell-power based on the amount of Baku Devourers in the stack.

Elite Units:

Erymanthian Tracker -> Erymanthian Hunter

Legend has it these fierce boar-like demons were born during the war in the Mythic Age as instruments of vengeance, their sense of smell and tracking ability is unrivaled in all of Sheogh and in all of Ashan, even Tuidhana's Assasins have no hopes of sneaking past demons who can smell their breath from nearly a mile away.
These days these demons serve as guards of the Citadels, but in the rare occasion that a slave escapes, they are let loose to hunt it down, to this end, when they can get away with it, they will sometimes let slaves escape on purpose, just for the thrill of hunting them down again for sport.

Root: The Erymanthian Boar obviously, which was a divine bringer of vengeance in some versions it was even Ares himself in the guise of a Boar, vengeance demons, Pig's/Boar's extreme sense of smell and intellect.
Large Creature
Unerring Focus(Basic & Upgrade)
Whenever an Erymanthian deals damage to a creature it damaged in the previous turn it gains a 10% bonus to all damage dealt to that creature, Retaliations do not trigger this effect, this effect stacks up to four times.
Persuit (Basic & Upgrade)
Whenever a creature that was last attacked (not retaliated against) moves away from an Erymanthian, the Erymanthian will automatically and immediately attempt to follow the creature moving in to the nearest square to that creature it can reach with it's full movement.
Hamstring (Upgrade)
Erymanthian attacks always cast Slow on a Basic level on the target, if the creature was already slowed by either a spell or the attack of an Erymanthian the Slow's duration is renewed and it's effect is increased by one mastery level up to Expert.

Abomination -> Chimera

In some ways perhaps the most expressive form of Chaos, a Demon species who have continualy mutated through the magic of Sheogh, unpredictable and wielding magic similar to that of it's melevolent master, Chimerae cause terror and destruction and leave only mutilated and transformed corpses in their wake.
Root: Greek myth, obviously.
Abilities:
Large Creature
Beast of Chaos (Basic & Upgrade)
Whenever a Chimera attacks a creature (does not trigger on retaliations) it swaps the defending greature's Defense or Resist (whichever it is attacking) with the lowest other primary attribute (Offense, Defense, Spell Power, Resist) the creature has.
Whenever a Chimera is attacked it swaps the creature's Attack or Spell Power with the lowest primary attribute the creature has.
This effect lasts 3 turns or untill the creature attacks or is attacked by the Chimera again.
Shifting Tactics (Upgrade)
Whenever the Chimera attacks it will at random attack either with a physical attack or a magical attack, alternating between using it's Attack versus it's Spell Power.
Tail Bite (Upgrade)
The Chimera's retaliation also inflicts poison for 3 turns.

Efreet -> Efreet Vizier

Efreeti are both respected and reviled amongst those dwelling within the Citadels, their power and cunning make them formidible allies but they also form the councilers and spies of the masters, they enjoy great privilige by acting as overseers to the other demons, lording over them.
They are also frequently deployed as ambassadors and deal with mortals on behalf of their realm, promising power and riches in return for loyalty to Urgash, using their magic to make such desires come true, though in their sadistic ways often find a creative twist to corrupt the wish while still upholding their end of the bargain.

Root: Arabian/Hindu myth, throwback to HoMMIII Inferno.
Abilities:
Teleport (Basic & Upgrade)
Caster (Basic & Upgrade)
-Advanced Confusion (expert on Upgrade)
-Advanced Bloodlust (expert on Upgrade)
-Expert Sorrow (reduces luck and morale)
-Basic Mass Slow (advanced on Upgrade)
Wish of Destruction (Basic & Upgrade)
Target enemy stack takes massive physical damage based on the number of Efreet in the stack currently in three turns, this ability can be used only once per battle.
Wish of Anhillitation (Upgrade)
Target enemy stack takes massive magical damage based on the number of Efreet in the stack currently in three turns, this ability can be used only once per battle.

Champion:

Empusa -> Empusa Ascendant

It's no secret many demon lords enjoy the services of Succubi, what is a secret though is when those roles are reversed, when a Succubi's power over the mind and body of another is "nurtured" for a long enough period of time, she has the potential to manipulate her former master.
When this power awakens and matures, the call of the depths of Sheogh drives these demonesses to seek even greater power, through a dark and mysterious ritual they are transformed into much greater beings, capable of binding even the fiercest demonic entities to their will, these are the Empusa and upon the field of battle, they manipulate the minds of their foes, sling the most destructive of Sheogh's magics and do so from the comfort and protection of their servant beasts, the nightmarish Therion demons.

Root: Greek myth, demigoddess that seduces men and feasts upon blood, Therion is a mythological creature, it's name literaly meaning "Beast".
Abilities:
Caster (Basic & Upgrade)
-Advanced Fireball (expert on Upgrade)
-Advanced Lightning Bolt (expert on Upgrade)
-Advanced Decay (expert on Upgrade)
-Advanced Ring of Frost (expert on Upgrade)
-Advanced Teleport (expert on Upgrade)
Domination (Basic & Upgrade)
Target enemy stack immediately attacks a stack adjecent to it without retaliation, the stack's damage is modified by the amount of Empusae using Domination in comparison to the attacking stack. (So very few Empusae using this ability on a powerful stack is -X% damage dealt but very many Empusae using this ability on a weak stack is +X% damage.)
Guardian Beast (Upgrade)
Whenever the Empusa would be attacked, it retaliates before being attack, and has unlimited retaliation. (To clarify, the Empusa attack animation involves a giant demonic talon attacking the victim, this ability is basically her Therion reacting faster then the opponent attacks.)

Q & A

Who is the artist?
Me, I sketched all these myself.
Also, the anatomy of the muscles is only partially correct, most of it is rubbish, but it looks reasonably convincing.
If you yourself have a creature idea and can't find good art online, try asking me, I'd be happy to oblige, but I'm not the only person on this board with a little pencil skill.

Why a Q & A segment?
I'll answer any important questions here in the Q&A as people ask them in the thread.
(Or people bring up things I feel need to be answered.)

What are all these creatures?
They all have their own mythological or even cryptid roots, mostly in greek myth but a few like the Baku, Efreet, Tatzelwurm and to some respects the Forge Fiend all have roots outside greek myth as well.
Descriptions coming soon, including the roots.

Why is there no longer a cyclops in this faction?
Long story short: people din't like my cyclops, so now there's a demonic boar man instead!

Why is the Efreet female?
Because I suspect the Academy Genie (when Academy gets released) will be male like it was in HoMMV, this balances it out.
I might do a male version in addition to the female to balance it out if the opposite turns out to be true (like in Clash of Heroes HD).
I might re-do her artwork and turn her male because the champion is now VERY feminine.

Why is a dainty looking female creature, a succubus even the Champion? You even have a Chimera in there!
Because:
A, I wanted a true Caster Champion, so far we don't seem to have one.
B, She's brought along a friend to deal with the boring chores of melee combat.

What was the most difficult thing about designing this faction?
Giving a feel of Chaos without resorting to many random abilities or effects, I try to avoid random in a game like this because it is beyond the player's control and form unreliable and in my opinion un-fun gameplay.

When are you going to do the Heroes?
The heroes are done, I will however NOT do their advanced classes, I'm even going to leave their advanced abilities blank for now.

What are you going to do next?
Work on my "Lair" (name not final) faction which is in part going to be a nod to Fortress, but will also add what I think might be quite an un-expected spin to the old idea.

Well, because the HoMMVI cyclops to me has two problems:
1, it's not very true to what I think is the most important part of Cyclopses, their prowess as craftsmen, they crafted Zeus' Thunderbolts, Hades Helmet and Poseidon's Trident.
Similarly in Japan exists the legend of the Ippon Dattara, a one eyed giant more skilled then any other in the art of blacksmithing.
2, They are Demon Imbued hybrids but there is no Demon that has any resemblance to them... so I created one, now it's obvious where the Wizards got their Demon Blood for the Cyclops.

But exactly the named features are making me ask why it is here. You mention Chaos being the essence of this faction. But forging is a bringing more ORDER into the material, forcing it into a certain wanted shape, and requires a ver ordered work as well...that's why this cyclops creature feels a bit out of place - because the others are, fitting to the theme, rather chaotic beings, and this is quite the opposite...

I'd say it's forcing change upon the material, it alters it from it's natural state.
I also wanted something to reinforce the Steel theme in the architecture and armaments, somebody has to craft it, and it shouldn't be shoddy, so why not a Demon who is a master of metal working?
That left me with 3 options:
Darves - nope, not with demons.
Telchines - again not for a demon faction.
Cyclopses - perfect fit.

I personally would hav eloved the steel being forced by chaotic energy itself rather than forged...

I seem to be fighting a losing battle here for the Forge Fiend, maybe I should demote it to Sheogh-Neutral and replace it.
It's not a big loss, the Chimera can step up and take the "beef elite" stick as well as the "crazy murder elite" one.
But I'll wait for some more feedback before I drop it.

Updated some of the Descriptions.

Possibly exaggerated her proportions a bit, then again she's got very beastial legs.

Also great creature... but what is it?
No I think I'll dig through my books for a new idea, if it comes to that. I'm sure I can dig up a interesting demon of some sort to fit the faction.

And updated the last two descriptions.
Lampades attack and Hero art is under way.

Really good faction in my opinion,I like your drawings and your ideas.
I only think, that the eurynomous could be changed, because the demon with this name was originally the moon goddess in ancient greek

Eurynomous is sometimes described as a servant of the Titaness Hecate who is also associated with the Moon.
It was a spirit of rotting corpses that lived in Hades.
It is also mentioned in biblical texts as a Demon.

I like the faction, I only think the Forge Fiend, Rune Fiend and the lampades should be replaced.

I would turn Chimera champion and add an argus/cacus/geryon/antaeus line-up instead of forge fiend and turn lampades into empusa.

Well that does it, added some new abilities to the Lampades and Forge Fiend.

Further updates are in the works.
Thanks for all the feedback but I'm pretty certain I want to stick to a caster Champion, so I'll keep the Chimera on elite.

I've got a different faction idea for a few of the creatures you mentioned, but not making any promises.
Argus should go to a new dungeon in my opinion anyway, I might do a Dungeon re-work but I have a different faction to work on before that in addition to this one.

This certainly is a very interesting faction you've made here Mr. D. And you skill with a pen(cil?) cannot be denied.

However, this is your faction. And because other people don't like it, does not mean that you have to change it.
Personally I don't get the feeling that this faction is very united. It certainly has a non-Fire-'n-Brimstone demon feel to it, but just an overarching theme doesn't cut it for me. For me, HV showed me the light, in that faction can (and should) have a core race.
But again, I'm not gonna press you to change your material.

And I also remember why my work always gradually forms. So one isn't daunted by a big block o' text the first time you see it.

Thanks for the encouraging words and in part I agree, but I have to keep in mind that in the end, if I designed it JUST for myself, I wouldn't post it.
Most of the criteque is quite fair, and if many feel the Forge Fiend needs to go, then I'll climb off my high horse for a moment to re-asses the situation.
Upon reviewing the art for the Lampades, she does seem a bit underwhelming, and it would be very odd for me to condemn other people's champion choices for the same reason. (which I have...)
So I am going to give her a make-over, possibly go Night-Terror's suggested Empusa route, but I am going to stick with a Caster Champion, that is set in stone.

Not saying you're wrong if you don't tailor your faction to feedback, just saying that my intent here is to create a faction that not just I will be happy with, but many of the board goers here can at least to some extent appreciate.

It won't be a reed swaying in the wind, but it also won't be a steel monolith, unbending and uncomprimising. (unless everybody loves it, but that won't be happening.)

Also about the pure greek myth faction:
One could make several without ever branching out of greek myth, despite that, I like a more mixed bag, a bit of focus is nice, but throwing in a wild card or two can really give it spice in my opinion.
Also I want the faction line-up to give a good mix of units and unit roles, sometimes the best ingredients can be found on the other side of the vegetable patch.

Honestly...

I love your champion. If you want to replace your illustration, by all means - in general I enjoy your drawings and think they're good, but that would probably be the weakest one of the bunch if I had to choose. However I truly hope you stay with the concept - an elite succubus with a guardian beast. <3

Congratulations, you've created one of my favorite champions ever.
