DDO - Heroe's Inc.

This isn't completed nor should it be viewed as authoritative regarding building characters on DDO.  Its just a little something I've put together to help those new to the game, who are thinking of joining.

Races

Human
Elf
Dwarf
Halfling

Drow Elf (need 400 favor/or buy from the ddo store)
Half-Elf (available for VIP/or from the ddo store)
Half-Orc (available for VIP/of from the ddo store)
Warforged (available for VIP/or from the ddo store)

Classes

When building your character you can either use one of the three pre-builds offered to you, or you can select Customize and build your own character from scratch.

Barbarian

Warrior that uses a skill called Rage and specializes in damage dealing (DPS - Damage Per Second).  Not heavily armored like Fighters, but they have more Hit Points.  When building your Barbarian (28 pt build), you will need to focus on building his Strength to help his melee attack and damage, Dexterity (because Barby's only wear light armor) and a high Constitution gives him more hit points and helps his Rage skill to last longer.  Favored Race:  Half Orc/Human.

Fighter

Pure DPS/Melee who later often specialized in one particular weapon.  Build on Dexterity if you want to favor dual weapon fighting; Strength if you wish to specialize in two handed weapons.  Like the Barbarian, a Fighter doesn't require spell points.  Build on Strength (melee attack and damage), Constitution (giving the Fighter more hit points) and perhaps some Dexterity.  However, Dexterity is rendered useless by the heavily armored Fighter .... unless he wishes to choose to take on a more ranged/Archer path.  Favored Race:  Half-Orc/Human.

Paladin

Fighter that can cast Divine Spells.  Has high reflex saves, therefore has better resistances against disease and poisons.  May also heal others 'Lay on Hands' and the Heal spell.  Charisma is the priority regarding abilities.  This enhances the Paladin's  healing and affects his turn undead ability.  Strength is needed for all melee/warriors.  Also Paladin's require the Wisdom score of around 11 points to be able to cast all the Paladin's spells.  Also Constution which affects the number of hit points a character has.  Favored Race:  Human

Monk

Free to VIP account, or can be purchased from the DDO store.  A warrior that specializes in fighting without weapons; shields or armor.  Monks are amazingly acrobatic and they harness this energy called Ki by maintaining mental balance (wearing of armor unbalances a monk and renders him pretty useless).   Can use Handwraps, Kamas, Quarterstaff's and Shurikens.  When building your Monk, your ability points should primarily be spent on Wisdom, as this improves the Monk's attacks and increases his Ki.  This also gives protection for the unarmored monk.  Monks also require Strength, Dexterity and Consitution.   Favored Race:  Human.

Cleric

Divine spell caster.  Main healer.  Cleric's are built on Wisdom.  Can wear full armor.  Less spell points than a favored soul but over double the spells .... wide range of spells from Heal spells to offensive spells.  Needs to change spells whilst resting at a shrine or tavern.

Cleric's are built primarily on Wisdom, the higher your Wisdom score the more powerful the cleric's spells, their bonus spell points and how hard they are to resist.  Some people add some Strength and Constitution in, just to make their cleric more hardy.  A high Charisma ability score improves a Cleric's Turn UnDead.  Favored Race:  Human/Half Elf.

Favored Soul

Can be unlocked through favor or purchased from the DDO store.  Divine caster similar to the Cleric, but who has less spells but almost twice the spell points.  They can cast more often than a cleric.  Regarded as the perfect battlecleric.   Charisma is the main ability for the Favored Soul.  It affects their spell casting ability and will dictate their spell points.  Wisdom also assists the Favored Soul, gaining bonuses to spell resistence.  Favored Race:  Human/Half Elf.

Sorceror

The Arcane version of the Favored Soul.  More spell points than a wizard, but less spells to chose from.  Built almost purely on Charisma, this gives the Sorceror his spell casting ability and spell point total.  Also Sorcerors benefit from Dexterity.  Some people choose to give their Sorceror some Constitution and Strength to bring up their hit points, but armor class and hit points can be enhanced with items and bonuses.  Its much better to maximise Charisma (same as Favored Soul).  Favored Race:  Human/Drow Elf.

Wizard

Intelligence based character.  Can inscribe scrolls (spells) to their spellbook (so that these becom permanent).  unlike the Sorceror, the Wizard needs to adapt and change over the spells in a tavern or resting (same as Cleric).  However, a Wizard can memorize every single spell in the game (permanently to their spellbook) and can change these (at a shrine or tavern) whenever needed.

Intelligence is the primary ability for wizards, affecting skill points, spell casting ability and spell points. After this ability has been maximised, the remainig points could be put into Dexterity and Constitution.  Favored Race:  Human.

Rogue

The most skilled player in the game.  Built on dexterity and intelligence.  You can build a master mechanic or an assassin.  Rogues disable traps, open locks, find hidden doors.  Also have sneak attack which when trained correctly has the ability to do massive damage to enemies (best done from behind or flanking).  Rogues should firstly be build on Dexterity (maximised) and then Intelligence.  The higher the Dexterity, the better armor class the Rogue has, better Reflex Saves and also assists with ranged attack.  A high Intelligence, gives the Rogue extra skill points.  Favored Race:  Halfling and Elf.

Bard

The buff meister.  Loads of skills and buffs.  His spellsinger buff actually replenishes spell points!!  Can also heal.  Also fairly good melee.  The Bard is another Charisma based character.  Charisma dictates how powerful a Bard's spell can be, how many bonus spell points they get and enhances spell resistance.  Strength for a Bard is also important as a Bard can be effective melee.  Also Constitution to increase hit points and Dexterity and Intelligence can also be used by the Bard as these are important later for many of the Bard's skills.  Favored Race:  Elf/Drow Elf.

Ranger

Rangers are incredibly versatile .... ranged attack and dual wielding melee (only character given dual weapon proficiency as a skill).  Can cast some Divine spells, some Heal, mainly buffs i,e. Camoflage.  Arcane Archer later makes own arrows.  Primarily built on Dexterity and Wisdom.  Favored Race:  Elf.

I encourage all those in the Guild and those playing to write about their own builds.  What they have chosen as Feats/Spells etc.

Long-term plan for Envirre is Paladin 14 / Ranger 6.

Feats would be:

Bow Strength (ranger lvl 1 bonus)
Two Weapon Fighting (ranger lvl 2 bonus)
Rapid shot (ranger lvl 2 bonus)
Diehard (ranger lvl 3 bonus)
Manyshot (ranger lvl 6 bonus)
Improved Two Weapon Fighting (ranger lvl 6 bonus)
Toughness
Weapon Focus: Slashing
Oversized Two Weapon Fighting
Power Critical
Improved Critical: Slashing
Dodge
Mobility
Spring Attack (prereq for Ranger prestige Tempest 1)

Skills through Ranger would be Spot / Search / Listen, and also some boosts in Swim, Jump, and Concentration. Skills through Paladin would be Concentration, Intimidate, Heal.

With Ranger 6 I'd have access to level 1 ranger spells and Paladin 14 I'd just break into getting a 4th level spell, which is the highest spell level for a paladin, which more than likely I'd be using to cast Holy Weapon for duel wielding 2 mega enchanted swords.

Prestiges would be Tempest 1 for Ranger (improvement to two weapon fighting) and Knight of the Chalice 2 for Paladin.

And of course as with any Paly I'd have my aura bonus, my smites, and most importantly my lay on hands for touching people with my special Bliz-love, known to cure even the most grievous wounds.

Ah nice one Blizz.  So your going down the Tempest Ranger road.  Well that makes perfect sense as you are using him as melee.  And yes I've seen you smiting on an alarmingly regular basis!!!

For my Sorceror I'm going Air Savant.  Spell Focus: Evocation

Get my Air Savant I at lvl 6 and will get Shocking Grasp as a spell like ability costing me only 2 sp every 6 seconds, rather than 25 I think.

Air Savant II at lvl 12.  Electric Loop as a spell like ability and Personal Featherfall Toggle.

Air Savant III at lvl 18.  Lightening Bolt as the spell like ability and Wind Dance.

Knight of the Chalice gives me extra smites, improved anti-fear aura, and special bonuses against evil outsiders.

Defender of Siberys prestige is heavily based on using a shield (not me) and the other one was Hunter of the Dead, which is focused on undead instead of devils and demons. It was good too but I wanted to get 2 more smites with Knight of the Chalice One of the things that was really appealing for Hunter of the Dead is that your weapons count as Ghost Touched.

Yeah the ghost touched stuff is good, just only against incorporeal lol, otherwise its just regular stuff.

For me being an Air Savant is just the best selection.  Everyone always thinks FIRE WALL.  Well they gimped that after Update 9.  Before it cooked everything within a 10 mile radius!!  Its still good, but being an Air Savant and having the really effective electriciy spells means I can still cast FireWall whenever I want.  Only thing I take a negative hit on is Acid spells and acid enhanced equipment.

Yeah I was in a group with a guy that has been playing for 6 years (!!) and he said when you make a wizard you want haste and firewall asap.

Still, firewall is a level 4 spell so it will get less and less important as you reach those higher level spells.

Yeah and I don't think you get Firewall until lvl 8 anyway.  Its always a great spell regardless.  Haste is always welcome.

Its just now, what with these new prestige enhancements.  Thats what we should be basing our characters on .. their prestige enhancements.

I haven't looked into all the possible enhancements and various builds, but I feel like going for sturdiness and healing. So some sort of healing tank. I will post my plan later I guess, when I have it figured out.

Well I discovered that stat bonuses through enchantment don't count for feat prereqs (which I now understand makes sense since you can redo your enhancements every 3 days for a price). My long-term build won't be disrupted, but I won't be getting Tempest until level 18, which kinda stinks. I cheated out of needing to get 15 dex for two weapon fighting + improved two weapon fighting because Rangers get it automatically, but I still need 13 dex if I want dodge, mobility, and spring attack, which you need for Tempest. My natural dex is 11, and I was planning on picking up one more through a human enhancement and another through a ranger enhancement. Instead I'll have to take my stat boost at levels 8 and 12 in dexterity to get the natural 13 (and then I'd free up the 4 enhancement points I spent for something else).

I'm kind of wondering if it's worth it because Mobility will just be a dead weight. It gives +4 AC while tumbling, which I don't have ranks in and I can't do in plate. Spring Attack takes away the -4 to hit penalty you suffer from attacking while moving, which I can already tell is a very useful feat.

Tempest 1 gives +10% chance with off-hand attacks and +2 AC while two-weapon fighting. It cost 4 enhancement points. It's good but I could also just invest in other enhancement and then not be bothered with getting dodge/mobility/spring attack.

Now this is one of the joys about building your character.  One of the problems that can arise is multi classing.  Most people just want a splash to give them extra skills or bonuses.  It just makes working out your feats and enhancements a bit more ... interesting.

But like you said Mobility will be a dead weight because as a Paladin you will be wearing armor. You might see if you can get yourself some Mithral or Darkleaf armor.

Well you need a good reason if you're missing out on the capstone enhancement at level 20. I would never multiclass a sorcerer because their capstone is intense.

Not even rangers have tumbling as a class skill, so taking Mobility is a bit pricey either way. Although the difference is that a straight ranger would be in light armor and probably have a higher dex.

Sounds interesting, will try later today.

Just a question: What classes are you guys? And how does this game really works. Is it just walking around hacking and slashing, or is there some roleplaying aspect as well?

For some unknown reason I feel like trying something crazy like Favored Soul / Sorcerer with maybe a mixture of Bard as well.

@BETA - by all means join up and have fun.  Its fantasy roleplay with lots of quests, neat weapons and enhancements, crafting ... plenty to do.  Your hybrid *ahem* monstrosity ... no only joking would be interesting.  They're all Charisma based characters.  At least you would be able to heal yourself.  Interesting concept actually, now I'm thinking .... hmmmm.

Hehe, I live for the insanity. Kind of. Actually its more like this: Ever since I got into D&D and discovered that a lot of classes like Bard, Sorcerer and Favored one based themselves on Charisma I've always wanted to try a Charisma based multi-class. It is second on my "Most wanted to play" second only to the Lawful Evil Paladin of Tyranny from 3.5 edition. I've just never gotten around to do it as I miss any real D&D group, plus on the D&D based video games(Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale and Neverwinter Nights) I've never played the campaigns more than once, plus that not all classes were available(well, NWN2 has all three of Sorceror, Bard and Favored One but I was more fasinated with Warlock).

EDIT: Also, forgot to ask earlier but what program do you guys use to chat with one another? Teamspeak? Skype? Ventrilo? Xfire?

@BETA - On DDO (dungeons & dragons online) there are no evil characters to chose from  The worse you can be is Chaotic Neutral.  No evil Cleric's.  Nothing.

And if you want to play as a Favored Soul you will need to buy it or take out a subscription as a VIP (then you get everything).  The other way to unlock Favored Soul is favor points.   You need to gain 2,500 favor to unlock the FvS.

Like Jaba says we currently only use party chat .... but I have skype and its a lot easier than having to press the damn 'F' key, especially when in battle lol.
