In that case, I'd advise sticking with your current machine until your budget expands to approximately 700 GBP.

Duly noted, though mind you I don't want a machine that opperates seamlessly, I just want a machine that 'opperates' lol.

Say, would clearing a substantial amount of space, 'speed' things up?

Yes. I once manually tried to disable seemingly useless processes (the word 'manually' has man in it, ergo an immediate high chance of fail) The "seemingly useless processes" turned out to be crucial system stuff.

12GB worth of crap in my recycling bin, I didn't even dare to look.

Deleting stuff from your hard drive wouldn't, but using msconfig and services.msc to eliminate unnecessary programs/services from running at startup would. A good rule of thumb is to disable anything not by Microsoft, and anything that say .NET Framework.

Definitely save some more if you want to play Shogun 2.

And contrary to popular misconception, cleaning your hard drive of useless stuff does speed up your computer. This is because data is fastest read from certain parts of the hard drive and when your hard drive is stuffed full, also the worst parts of the drive are used to store data. Plus the drive is usually fragmented as hell.

If you want to speed up your current computer, run thorough Virus and Adware checks. Delete all unnecessary data. Disable all unnesessary services and startup programs. Defrag, run registry clean and overclock your processor to 2,5 GHz. My 4400 is running at 3.0 GHz but I played around with the voltage. Mine would go to 2.6 GHz without playing around with the voltage while staying stabile.

Outdoor Hard Drive? Tuning is not worth! The CPU speed to reduce.

Usually only in very special occasions. More advice to add on: Set the swap file to a spesific size and disable the default of "change size whenever the OS feels like it". Either 512 MB or needed size to support hibernation mode.
But for the most, cleaning your HD won't speed it up, unless it has less than 1 gigabyte of free space.
Slow browser can be mitigates by using a faster one, like Opera. But the general performance can't be improved unless its a laptop killed by bloatware.

As for saving, I am with mvass on this one, mostly because AMD has not released A10 for desktop, yet.
8 gigs of RAM, a application to use 2 of those gigs as swap, 2 dedicated to the GPU, and 4 for the desktop.
And whatever you do, do not buy a prebuilt one.

In the event of a lightning storm, should I switch off my computer?

P.S a quick answer is ****ing preferable.

Only asking 'cause last time there was a thunderstorm, something wiped out my ethernet plug, and fried both my video card and CPU, (my CPU recovered, but alas the video card was screwed)

My Xbox on the other hand went bezerk for a few weeks, then it returned to normal.

And my tv got the worst of it, it turned ****ing green (still not sure whether this is the cause, but it's likely)

I just want to make sure whether there's a legit threat, or whether it's juist me being paranoid.

You don't just switch the stuff off, you unplug it immediately. All of them.

Unless you have it all connected to a ground fault interrupter, having stuff plugged in during lightning storms can be an economic suicide.

Some photos of what happens when a lightning strikes a computer. And that guy got off easy because it came in through the modem. My friend's computer was completely melted, including the keyboard, mouse and screen.

A few years ago my modem melted as well.

Also the lightning drilled a hole in one of the pipes in the house and then jumped from that one and drilled its way into another pipe.

It's scary ****.

Why is it that every PC game that I buy as of late, I needed steam to play it? (hard copies all of them)   Is it just the matter of retailers, or is everyone doing this>?

-Empire TW
-Shogun TW
and now Skyrim

P.S SKYRIM IS 'ERE!

Isn't it obvious, Tsar? Steam is a DRM service! Why not implement a quite strong DRM that your customers even seem to appreciate into your products? Steam is also a very popular retailer, so adding your game to steam will probably increase sales. For a publisher there's no noticeable downside.

I do enjoy having my games forever imprinted, meaning I never have to replace my game in-case it gets broken, but I shouldn't need constant internet access to be able to play on my 'hard copy' game.

Where can I download the graphic card driver for Windows XP Ice?!

I need this to play Minecraft.
