In my opinion Heroes IV has the best soundtrack of all HoMM games.
And there's so much more good to say about this game. Atleast it has by far the best atmosphere, nostalgic value, map designs and campaigns. Also all the small things like Spell and Hero descriptions are very interesting and well written.
I like having op hero. Those might be imbalanced against the (bad) cpu, but this game is best played against people anyway. And I often don't see the hero playing that major part in H3 or H5. Heroes IV has some flaws like bad... I mean BAD AI and some fugly looking creatures.
Still I don't understand all the Heroes IV hate. I understand if people prefer H3 or H5 because I like those aswell, but H4 is by no means a bad game overall.

Quote: usually, the only way my heroes were imba was through their spells. otherwise they would still die to a single attack, if the stack isn't weakling.
Sounds like you didn't get GM combat, level 25+ and/or decent artifacts. You should be able to solo about 8 black dragons easily with a good hero.

I know, I usually used 2 - 3 heroes, and mind control / invocation to block enemies. or resurrection if I can't prevent enemies from attacking me. my heroes were just support usually.

Sounds like the opposite of my tactic, where I try and groom a solo hero then once it can do everything without creatures I get a support hero to stick with the main army.

I've already seen very powerful combat heroes, but it takes some nasty artifacts if you want to beat hundreds of tier 4 with a single hero without spells.

I never said without spells. I usually like to have a powerful combat hero with Life and/or Order magic, depending on availability through adventure objects. GM combat, MR, Melee and Order Magic plus advanced Life magic is quite a powerful combination. Of course, due to level constraints this does rely on availability of universities and such, but generally you can get to Master order magic without them.

you have only one hero? I prefer to have a few weaker ones to cast more spells.

Heroes IV would be better than Heroes III if the AI wasn't completely clueless.

Sounds like those who love it never played H2-H3 intensively. I must admit I never gave a real chance to H4, I tried it for a month and found it terrible. For me it has nothing to do with previous games, but propose new strategies while not improving old. Graphics are very nice, it is true.

I have played H2-H3 intensively. I however have played H4 just as intensively (for more than just a month ) and I must say it indeed did correct many things that were bugging me in previous games (useless skills, useless spells etc). In fact (if we don't take mods into account) I prefer H4 over H3.

If you think, which one - HOMM3 or HOMM4 - is better, then you are crazy! Just look at the facts - H3 was published in 1999(this means that his age is like mine!), and H4 - in 2002!
Well, I think that H4 is better.

I agree with the OP, H4 is great.
I am one of those players who don't bash any of the series.. I can enjoy and do well at all of them, H3, H4, H5 just the same. H3 and H4 definetly need the Initiative Bar which shows which order units move though.

Quote: Years after I stopped playing heroes 3 and 5, and all others for that matter, I always find myself trying out new maps of the game.
The strategy around this game is so nice and I love it so much. It's such a shame those tard devs chose to completely ignore the great innovations done by this game.
Who's with me?
Its my favorite of all the heroes games!

So this one has just recently turned 10 years old. Paying tribute to the anniversary, I will echo the thread title, it really is the best Heroes game. 10 years ago it clicked with me like very few other games did, almost everything was in perfect place, especially the music and the 6 factions that resonated very well, plus the heroes/creatures travelling alone. I liked H5 for what it was and I'm one of the bigger H6 supporters but I will always be disappointed that H4 wasn't better received and it didn't give a new direction for subsequent releases, but they had to retreat. H4 forever!!!

I agree Heroes 4 is simply sublime. Heroes participate far more in combat than ever before (the whole point of the entire franchise) you can finally purchase any hero you want (within a certain 'radius')
The thing I love most though is the magic system, sooo easy to use and to understand, I simply adore it. Combat is zoomed in comfortable so that I can actually see my damn units (go to heroes 5 and see how tiny your units are and compare that to H4)
Which brings me to my next point, creature models. Heroes 4 creature models were very well done IMHO, and they don't have ridiculous/useless accessories.
The limited creatures in an army (especially if you have more than one hero) and limited creatures overall and no upgrades is a serious drawback.
I personally believe that heroes should participate and be able to be slain in battle rather than stand at the back of the army like cowards and do generic sprints down the battlefield (they removed even that in H6, lol)
