Been playing for like 20 minutes, here's some first impressions.

The Good
This game is GORGEOUS! I love the direction they took with the art style. HoMM V's Warcraft and Warhammer influences are entirely gone, and we're back to a classical Heroes design. And boy, does it look good.

Pikeman are back! Woooo! No more stinky peasants!

Campaign-The campaign looks to be the most detailed of any Heroes game so far. Voice acting is actually decent, seems like there is potential for some real character development, characters have backstories, etc. This is good.

Music is, as always, great. No complaints here, and seeing them reuse some themes is nice, good for nostalgia.
UI also looks great, very easy to navigate, very aesthetically pleasing. Quite good. I would, however, prefer it to be fullscreen. Something about a windowed UI just feels wrong.

The Bad
Combat takes FOREVER! Creatures have waaaay too much health. I attacked two Ghouls (Necro core) with 23(!!!) Praetorians and only killed one. A simple neutral battle to kill seven Ghouls defending a resource area took me like three minutes. In HoMM III that would have taken about thirty seconds. Creature health needs to be toned down, drastically.

The Ugly
Town screens. It's horrifying what's happened to them. No detail, not even full screen, no character. It's awful, I am absolutely appalled. Every Heroes game, even HIV, has had a full and gorgeous town screen. It's an integral part of the series' character, and what helps define and distinguish each town. It's what gives the town their charm, and these town windows are just downright awful.

I would seriously prefer that they delay the game for however long it takes, I don't care how long, so that they can implement real Heroes town screens. There's only five towns to begin with, it was supposed to be quality over quantity, what happened?

Okay, first impressions first: It feels WAY more like a game near completion than the last beta. I'm feeling good about this.

Umm you don't try to kill units with sentinels or praetorians. Archers and sisters on the other hand..

Right, this is the second time when the download stucks after about 2%. What's the remedy? I'm using a download manager by the way.
Edit: appears to be bandwidth allocation with queues or something. After 2 failures now the download speed is close to the max speed of my connection. I guess many downloads are now finished and the servers/the links to the servers have spare resources.

Within 3 working days I guess. It was in a Beta FAQ/QA somewhere IIRC

Also, it seems I can now publicly complain about the TWs, soooo...

THEY ARE UGLY AS A BOTOXED OCTOGENARIAN MALE! THEY MAKE ME VOMIT! AND THEN VOMIT SOME MORE! AND THEN CURSE UBIHOLE TO THE DEEPEST CIRCLE OF HELL, WHERE THEY RIGHTFULLY BELONG!

I, myself will include the following bug every time I hand in a report:
'Severe Town Screen deficiency!-makes the player stare at screen, yell, may lead to intentional crashes'

My Impressions of the game sofar:

Good:

-Graphics are very nice and I didn't see any glitches at all

-Computer speed is insanely fast compared to previous games. Passing turns now gives you a new turn within a second or two. Amazing work there.

-Lots of hero abilities to pick from and more freedom to pick whatever you want to

-For those that complain about long fights I actually enjoyed that a lot as it will involve a bit more thinking than just having high initiative to strike and kill first. You can adjust the movement speed and animation speed in the options so the fights were actually pretty fast that way.

-The combatscreen was nice and I liked the hero attacks, plus obstacles means a lot more now to hide from ranged attacks.

-Music was good

Bad:

-Since all heroes can basically train any ability there will be cookie cutter specs leading to less craving to replay the maps. Also the heroes lose their feel and soul when they train in something that doesn't suit their path.

-Horrendous city menu. Whoever made that needs to reconsider his/her future as a UI-creator.

-While I liked the magic I tested I would rather want to find the spells out in the open or through magic shrines in cities and not through selecting them as abilities.

-Every heal ability also resurrect stacks from units if you overheal which makes them extremely powerful and also extremely enduring and annoying to fight

-Too little content to test, even for a beta

-No simultaneous turns in multiplayer
-No random map generator

Okay, well it's still not perfect, few bugs in there. Generally it's not a bad effort. The town screens and other interface bits like the hero equipment... screen thing... are still undeniably terrible though.

Town Windows: I beg you devs, make them look like the amazing main menu screen and I am fine even with windows... ofc full screen will be better but now the town windows 2,5D looks horrible... and yet you got so nice and beautiful screen with flying griffs around majestic city ...I dont get this.

I get it as a design choice, but it's just kinda irritating to watch my units doing basically nothing at all.

Regardless of what units are the killing ones, though, neutral battles take much too long atm. I shouldn't need to take three minutes just to clear a stack of neutrals guarding a mine or a treasure chest. Kinda afraid for how long bigger battles are going to take.

Okay, first impressions.  I'm going to start with things that I think could be improved, because apart from these things the game looks great:

The dire wolf's model is too small.  Right now, the model is the same as the Timber Wolf, but the Dire Wolf fills a 2x2 square.  If the Dire Wolf is indeed larger, then it needs to actually be larger.

There's some issues with the cursor not lining up where it's supposed to, but that may have been a one-time issue.  I'll double-check that when I load the game next.

Everybody has a character voice except Bluebeak.  Why there's a talking bird, I honestly don't know - but if there's a talking bird, it should talk.

This has been discussed at length, but it bears repeating: menu icons are too small.  The interface is very pretty, but right now the icons are minimalized to the point of not being noticed.

Town Window
Okay, it needs to be said.  The Town Window has problems.  First, as someone already stated, the Close Window icon is in the top-right corner of the window - which, in addition to being very small, is also in an unusual spot considering that every previous Heroes game had an icon very much like the End Turn icon.  So occasionally you'll end your turn without intending to do so.  Not everyone will make this mistake, and admittedly it's a careless mistake to make, but the game interface really ought to be idiot-proof, and the town window isn't idiot-proof.

The town view only appears when you're in the "main" town tab.  If you're going to take away the beautiful full screen Town Screen, then at least let the town view appear for all tabs in the window.

There are other issues with the town window, but it ultimately comes down to this:  The Town Window doesn't work.

Combat
Combat runs pretty well.  The creature animations are a little slow - but increasing their movement rate only a fifth of the way in the Options screen makes them move plenty fast.  I hesitate to experiment further; I worry that I'd quickly lose track of everything.  Has anyone tried setting the speed to max?

Campaign
Maybe I'm just not playing right, but this first map is harder than it looks.  You really have to budget your army - because your town can't recruit more than Pikemen.  If that's a bug, it needs to be fixed; the map is damn near impossible if you lose your crossbowmen.

My download still haven't finished.
About Town Windows, I liked the art style, but definitely they should work on them to make a full town like previous games, not just a small image that barely changes...
And long combats have a problem. How long will it take to your friends finish their turn in multiplayer games?

Fair enough, but as a casual player the creature HPs just feel too large. I can shoot 6 Crossbowmen with 20 and only kill 2 on average...just feels unsatisfying. In Heroes III or V that'd be like three times as many casualties even if the stack shot for min damage. Just feels slow and not that satisfying at the moment, but I'll have to play more before making a final judgement.

It does seem like they're going for an overall lower number of creatures, to go with the much larger HP bars of each creature, which I'll also have to play more to form an opinion on.

I'm also not sure how I feel about the removal of the Defense and Attack stats (unless I'm understanding the % reductions wrong) but that is also something I will have to play more to form a judgement on.

I am glad to see that the aesthetics (town screens aside) are very good, though. It's gonna be much easier for them to fix/tweak stat numbers than do an aesthetic overhaul, so it's good to see one isn't needed (again, town screens aside).

Might try speeding up the combat animations, see if that makes it run at a good pace.

Just had something weird where my crossbowmen wouldn't shoot in combat, guess they didn't like my orders.

Noticed quite a few missing/wrong numbers in tooltips, guess those would be fixed before release. Any chance they'll update the beta itself while it's going on?
