The Ares Incident

Inquisition Headquarters, Theseus, Orpheus Sector
377.674.M41

Inquisitor Deza,

I have reviewed your report and find it to be... distressing.  You have my blessing to proceed with your investigation.  Sven Ol'tan, along with the rest of his ilk, have avoid the Emperor's scrutiny for long enough.  Maybe they are innocent.  There is a first time for everything after all.

What troubles me most about your report are the sealed records.  It does not end with Sven Ol'tans records. The entire clan's records are sealed as well.  That is a problem.  I have never heard of anything superseding magenta clearance which makes me wonder who is hiding their tracks.  No doubt someone with considerable power, influence, and access to Inquisiton records.  Perhaps that it was this line of inquiry that resulted in the late inquisitor Nine's untimely disappearance.  I hope it is not one of our own.  Be prepared.

Sven Ol'tan and his clan reside in the Ares star system.  Despite sealed records, they are quite infamous.  Their hands are in everything.  It should not be very difficult to locate them.  Be forewarned, they are very powerful and it is uncertain how far their influence spreads.  They are well-armed, well-trained, and do not fear anyone.  They do not fear the Inquisition.  I want to know why not.  They will regret their arrogance.

I want to know why Sven Ol'tan is connected to words such as "xenos," "demonic." and "rogue inquisitor."  I want to know everything that wretched clan is up to.  I want to know who protects them.  I want to know if it is one of our own.

May the Emperor's light guide you.

Lord High Inquisitor Omega

The data slate screen stares blankly into Deza's face as the Lord Inquisitor's message sinks in.  Sevn Ol'tan and the Ares star system;  two leads stemming from a dead man.  Not a great start but a start.  The extraordinary event that follows would later be known as the Ares Incident.

Kiel looked at the report again, or, what "High command" had given him, barely enough to make a skeleton of a guess at what the mission was. So the Emperor needs me for this? Yes, this may indeed be a threat that needs addressing. I'm to report to an inquisitor, a mister Lord Inquisitor Alexander. Indeed, this is truly important if they would send a "Lord" Inquisitor. I wonder who else they paired me up with?

"No matter," he said aloud, "Whoever it is will be as the mission requires. The Emperor will chose as the Emperor wills." With that cheerful thought-seriously, that did cheer him up-Kiel hopped up out of his bunk in almost full-equipment, minus helmet and guns, and went off to see if the Vindicare acolytes and pupils had left him any food.

The Ol'tan clan...an infamous bunch indeed. This would require more than ressources and finesse than the usual job. As of now Alexander was powerless to unconver more information on his target which would prevent him from rigorously learning every detail about his prey so instead of focussing on what he could not do he decided to start with what he could do.
He wiped the memory coils of the data slate and put it down on the corner of his desk that wasn't covered in the late Inquisitor Nines insane rumblings. He waved at one of the servo skulls in his bookshelf, with a quiet humming it floated to his desk: "Find Karl and tell him to compile a list of 50 soldiers currently employed by the holy Inquisition who have proven themselves to be amongst the most loyal, ressourceful and competent individuals in our services. Disregard any candidates that have either worked for Inquisitor Nines or his mentor Inquisitor on any previous occasion. You are to deliver this message to him alone and immediatly delete this message upon delivery. He has one hour to present his findings in my office." it's bionic eye gave a short green glow of acknowledgement before it floated of to find his Interrogator.
That took care of the muscle but he would need more than just if he wanted to get anywhere...he needed something more subtle someone who could be invisible if need be.
Alexander smiled to himself, he knew just where to find such an individual. While there was nothing in the service of the Imperium that an Inqusitor could not request for his needs, Alexander knew that this undertaking would require a lot of subtlety if Lord Omegas worst concerns should prove to be true. Officaly demanding one of the Officios fabled Assasins was anything but subtle as these exceptional individuals were a rare breed indeed no matter which temple they came from. Fortunately the Vindicare Temple owed him a favour and he knew just how he wanted it to be repaid.
Alexander left his office and made for his ship where his private astropath would see the sending of this confidential message.
"So the Ol'Tan do not fear the Inqusition..." he thought to himself.
It was a sentiment he was resolved to rectify.

Anya was waiting.  She was sitting completely still in the cloistered courtyard, its ancient pillars alive with ivy and rambling roses.  Small insects and birds ducking and diving through the foliage.  There were hushed voices from the other end of the courtyard from Sisters going about their duties. Anya had sensed the oncoming activity.

The peace was broken suddenly by the young Sister hurrying through the cloister towards Anya.  Anya slowly stood as the younger woman breathlessly approached.  (She was wearing full armor and Anya knew from the girl's breathing and red face that she was still adapting to the weight of the armor that would one day possibly save her life).

"Celestine Anya ..... Celestine Anya", she called out.  And straightening up to respectfully address the older woman, she stuttered, "the Canoness wants to see you as a matter of urgency".  Anya nodded (she knew anyway, she'd sensed it).  And looking down at the young Sister she snapped the loose shoulder plates into their locked position.  "You must always remember to fasten your armor, its designed to fit you perfectly.  If it falls away, what happens?".  The young Sister bolted her answer "You die and fail in your service to the Emperor".  "Correct" nodded Anya and then walked off in the direction of the Canoness's offices.

Horrace Eggidio sat on his bunk, reading the order-scroll that had been delivered to him scant minutes earlier.

Segmentum Fortress Cypra Mundi.
377.674.M41

Commissar-Captain Horrace Eggidio,

You are to report to Segmentum Fortress Cypra Mundi in two days, at 9:00 Fortress Time. There you will be briefed on your mission by the Administratum Master. For now it is enough that you know that you will be attached to an Inquisitorial Party. After your briefing you will board the Oberon Class Battleship Unrelenting, which will ferry you to your mission and will remain in orbit for the duration of the mission.

Details of your mission are not to be discussed with anyone below the rank of Lord Commissar/Commissar-General, General or Commodore-Captain and discuss them on a need-to-know basis.

The Emperor Protects.

Lord Commissar Krieglust

P.S.
You need not be reminded that it is unacceptable to shirk your Commissarial Duties in any given situation.

Horrace put the scroll back into it's container.
Reporting to the Segmentum Fortress would not be a problem. He was in Cypra Mundi's capitol, in the Departmento's head office. So all he needed to do was commandeer a vessel to take him to the orbitall fortress.
However, there was much more work to be done. He needed to send a request to the Administratum Master to be given the necessary files, whatever those might be. He needed to pick up the refractor field he was issued when he got promoted to Commissar-Captain. He needed to exchange his issued Chain Sword for his own Power Sword now it was repaired. And last but not least he still had 3 inspections to preform today.
So Horrace stood up, took his distinctive overcoat from the hanger and marched out his room. There was work to be done.

Kiel looked at the request over his spoonful of broth critically. So now I'm not only ordered by the emperor, but by the blasted church as well! This "Alexander" had called in a favor and Kiel had been chosen to accompany the Inquisitor by the Vindicare council. "By the emperor, may his protection shine upon us all, the universe itself is shoving me in this direction. At least now I can keep my... 'Private contact' secret behind the order of the Temple." Almost completely under his breath he added a treasonous, "Guess they do get some things right."

None had heard the whisper, of course. They never did, and the spy and listening devices, or the "Eyes and Ears" of the Vindicare that "Protected our brothers and sisters from infiltration and heretics" could not detect whispers of such low and soft frequencies. He had modified the one in his suit so that the same happened, and he was safe to mutter his blasphemies all day; not that they were so common, of course. But sometimes those priests just...

Kiel finished off his soup and turned to one of the temple's initiates, "Initiate Brother, I greet you in the Emperor's Name." His subject turned to see who had interrupted his conversation, and the Initiate's eyes widened as he realized who he was talking to.

"Brother Assassin! I... uh, yes. Greetings in the Emperor's name. May his protection shelter you and the Vindicare and his presence drive away the heretics," The boy stumbled out.

Mentally, Kiel sighed. Another brainwashed drone. Aloud, he finished the formal greeting, "And also with you. Now, all formality aside, I have never seen you here before. This must mean that this is your first day here, as the assassins are informed of all who come into these halls. Welcome to the Vindicare church." The initiate shuffled nervously at the thought of every assassin knowing him by sight after today. Good, keep paranoid and you might live long enough to become a full priest, or at least die and give The Emperor some glory in it. Kiel really didn't care one way or the other. "Now, which ship did you come on and who was with you?"

"Well, I ah *ehem* um, I came in with six other-"

"Good!" Kiel interrupted, "Then since it is my duty for the day," lie, "I will give you the grand tour. Oh, which ship did you come on again?"

The boy looked at him with a confused expression, "Well, the transport ship 'Maiden's Grace', sir."

Kiel nodded, "Good. Hanger two, if I'm not mistaken. Well then, you are now under my charge. Show me to the others."

At the end of the day, Kiel was on the ship and the vast majority of the Vindicare temple was none the wiser. His superiors covered up by actually switching his schedule around so that none would know of his lie, and he was scott free will no chance of detection. Just as any Assassin would like it.

Karl was studying the works of a recently missing interrogator about the nature of inefficient torture when he got the message from the servo-skull. He immediately put down the book, checked the time and quickly went to the records of enlistment held in the barracks. There he was immediately a bit flummoxed by indecision. He quickly noted down some names, because he felt he was wasting time, standing there being indecisive. He noted down a couple of mercenaries, some inquisition storm troopers and some notable soldiers of the imperial guard, that somehow got into service with the inquisition, for variation's sake, but immediately scratched a couple of those, since they didn't have any notable skills or experience in comparison to the mercenaries. He added the three currently available sisters of battle he was surprised to find on the list. He was taking too long, he could feel it.

He quickly finished the list by adding some of the more notable nobodies on the list. He shouldn't be so bothered by the time limit, he told himself and he definitely should be more firm in his resolve, because he was tempted to go back and go over the records again and he would have, if he wasn't pressed for time. This was not the way for a future inquisitor to behave. He took some deep breaths and rushed towards Inquisitor Deza's office. With four minutes remaining, he entered the office and put the list on inquisitor Deza's desk.

"I've compiled the list. These are the best soldiers currently available to us, Inquisitor Deza." he said a bit nervously.

Dorian spent the day at a local bar, a block away from the Inquisition Palace. He looked at his half empty glass. Dorian already spent four weeks on this world. He tracked down one of many local recidyvists and received a hefty sum for his head. It was enough to make a living untill someone of the local inquisitors offer him a job. After he applied himself as an avaivable recruit, all he had left was to wait. It was his way of life. Though he was still young when compared to other soldiers who had centuries of expirience, Dorian already had served three inquisitors, two of them were from the Ordo Hereticus. Despite past difficulties, his faith in the Emperor only strenghtened. After surviving the massacre of Amberus III, Dorian swore to himself to hunt down all that oppose the Imperium. Untill his last breath. That's why, at the first opportunity he offered his skills to the Holy Inquisition. His first master belonged to Ordo Xenos. A young, headstrong, just initiated into a full pledged inquisitor. To impulsive in Dorian's opinion. He helped out in eradicating a xenophilic cult, however during the purge, his lord was one of the first killed. Dorian and a few others survived, bearing various injuries. In his words "We slaughtered the heretics, however the b!tches also took out nearly all of us and managed to take a bit of me with them". The proof of this was his optics implant. It had thermal vision and enchanced targeting systems. His second employer was a lot more competent. In his retinue Dorian served for seventeen years, untill the inquisitor fell when fighting a leader of a Nurgle dedicated cult. His last employer died a week after Dorian pulled her out of a shot down Valkyrie. Their mission on Curonus Prime was a complete failure. The strike force was ambushed and completely outgunned. After being healed, Dorian travelled here.
He finished the drink, payed the bartender and went outside. He made his way to the Inquisition Palace. A feeling told him, that today was his lucky day.

Horrace Eggidio was sitting a medium room on the orbital Segmentum Fortress. In the room was a large Data-globe that was turned off and several high officers of the Imperial Guard and Navy and two other Commissars. Horrace had come early, as had the others present, tardiness was a clear sign of incompetence or disinterest. Not one of the qualities that was encouraged within the service of the Emperor.
Exactly on time a member of the Administratum walked in, his nearly white robes indicating his high rank within the Imperial bureaucracy, a prefect. The prefect was followed by the Administratum Master of the Fortress, who turned on the data-globe. As both the adepts walked in the room, the officers and commissars stood up as one and saluted the men.
As the data-globe showed a planet turning on its axis, the prefect started speaking.
"Gentlemen, this is Ares. This is the destination of your joint mission. Though each of you will recieve individual assignments, your overal objective is the same. Ares is a world on the brink of revolt. No matter the size, produce or population, this is unacceptable. Every world of the Imperium is a gear in the Emperors machine and thus the loss of a single one is a blow to the Imperium. Your objective is to crush this revolt before it has the chance to take shape."
The prefect let the Master speak now.
"As ordered, you all will go to the Ares system in the Battleship Unrelenting. There, martial law will be declared over the system and the planet will be occupied by the Imperial Guard. Colonels Chiswick of the Cadian 64th, Lochester of the Cadian 127th, Sherman of the Cadian 477th, Deanner of the 39th Brimlock Dragoons, Humbert of the 41th Terrax Guard and Von Hoffen of the Kriegan 23rd will lead their respective regiments in the occupation. Overal command will be placed on the orbitting Unrelenting in the hands of  General Bronn, Rear-Admiral De Witt and Lord Commissar Krieglust."
The prefect took the word once more.
"After the occupation, the governing of the world will be placed in the hands of the officers here present, who will sit in a Millitary Court untill it is deemed safe to hand rule back to the Aressians. All commisioned officers of the Aressian Planetary Defence Forces will be replaced by off-world loyalists."
"This operation will be headed by Commissar Boraman." The Master added.
"Lastly, the Inquisition has shown special interest into the Ol'tan family. We suspect that this family has many ties to the rebellion brewing on Ares and may even lead some of the rebel-factions. For this reason, we will dispatch Commissar-Captain Eggidio to the Inquisitorail Party to fulfill the request for a Liaison to the Departmento Munitorum on Ares. In this sittuation that is you, gentlemen, as the loyalty of the Aressians is to be questioned. Keep in mind that any requests made by the Inquisitorial Party are to be provided as possible given the situation. All requests are to be made by Commissar-Captain Eggidio in person, preferably over a secure Vox Channel. Any requests not made by him are to be distrusted. The Commissar-Captain will make this clear to the Inquisitor that all request have to be made through him, due to the situation on Ares. He is also to provide whatever findings to the Martial Court, as deemed possible by the Inquisitor."
The Master turned the Globe off.
"All required files of the system will be delivered to your quarters before the Battleship leaves. Keep in mind, gentlemen, that this mission is issued by the Lord Commander Militant of the Imperial Guard himself. Failure is not an option and an affront to the Emperor himself!" The prefect ended.
"May the Emperor bless you." The master said.
"The Emperor Protects!" the officers present said as one man, before reciting the Litany of War.

Shortly after returning to his office Karl came in with the requested list. Impressively he had managed to get it in under one hour the task should have taken him atleast 2. So far he was his most promising Interrogator, then again he was the only one still alive.
"I've compiled the list. These are the best soldiers currently available to us, Inquisitor Deza." he was nervous. Good, arrogance would be the undoing of this talent.
"Took you long enough... Now see to it that my ship is launch ready. Have a techpriest run her through all the neccesary checks and have him assigned to me personally. I don't want to repeat the disaster that was Helanus VI."
Being stranded on a Death World for almost 5 days was not an experience Alexander was keen on repeating.
"That will be all, thank you Karl." with a curt nod he left the room to see to his duties.

Alexander started to go through the list, Karl had indeed done his job well, the list was full of veterans who had been through and hell and back. The list ranged from hive cutthroats to decorated members of the imperial guard and Inquisitorial Stormtroopers.
"Hmm...Guardsmen are too onedimensional, Bounty Hunters while more versatile are too unreliable, the Hivescum is only slightly less likely to kill me than the enemy..." and so he went on until he had crossed off all but the Sororitas Members and a man named Dorian Bryson.
While he was originally Hive Ganger gone bounty hunter his resumée was quite impressive he had made it out of an Eldar Raid alive amongst other things which more than suggested that the man was  ressourceful and could act on his own. The fact that he had served with the Inquisition before on numerous occasions more than made up for his Hive background. His file noted him as being stationed on Theseus at this time.
"Excellent.Just what I needed." he dispatched another Servitor Skull to find him and have him report to him immediatly.
The Sororitas members caught his eye. As a hereticus Inquisitor Alexander had come to meet quite a few of these zealous warriors and while they rarely made for good theological debating partners their adherence to dogma and rigorous training made them very loyal and potent assets. While the officially listed members where exceptional warriors he discarded the list, he knew a better, more discrete way of getting a Sister of Battle. His old companion Valina of the Order of our Martyred Lady had risen to the rank of Canoness Commander and while her position would make it impossible for her to come on this mission with him, he was sure she could send him one of her brightest protegées. Again he went of to his ship to send the private message imparting upon it his need for secrecy and haste, of course he didn't need to mention it Valina would understand but it never hurt to be sure. He wanted to leave Theseus as soon as possible and be away from the prying eyes of his fellow Inquisitors, until he or Omega found out who was covering for the Ol'Tan there was not much sense in hanging arround in inquisitorial Headquarters.
On his way to the ship he made his report to Lord Omega that he had assembled his team and would make for the Ares sector as soon as time would allow. Content with his progress so far Alexander felt his spirits rise.

Anya knocked on the heavy wooden door that led into the Canoness's private offices.  The door's hidden locks cracked loudly and slowly opened.  Anya walked into the large room which was bathed in daylight, her eyes narrowing slightly from the glare.  The Canoness Valina was sitting at her desk, "ahh Celestine Anya, good good.  Come, sit", she gestured Anya to a large leather wrapped chair.  Anya greated the Canoness formally, "May the Emperor protect you Mother Canoness".  "And praise to his Glory and Wisdom", Valina replied.  Only then did Anya take her seat.  The Canoness rose from her seat and pulled on a velvet rope.  There was a faint hushed whirring sound as the shutters closed over the windows and the room darkened just as the suspensor globes high in the ceiling cast their soft glow.

"Anya, an old friend as asked for my help and I trust this man implicitly.  I believe you have been chosen, Anya to perform a great service for your Emperor and your Sisterhood.  I need you to travel to Inquisitor Deza, but in total secrecy.  No-one must know of this, not even your sisters.  Anya was more than just a little curious.  Yes she was pleased she had been chosen, this showed a great deal of faith from the Canoness and to be able to work so closely with the Inquisition, Anya saw as a priviledge.  Yet the secrecy had her aroused her curiosity, however she decided not to say anything to the Canoness.

"I will be sending you as a diplomatic envoy under the pretense of delivering some manuscrips to the Emperor's library.  You will have the usual backing my dear.  You know the safe houses and contacts should you need them.  Once you are at the Inquisitor's headquarters, you will need to make contact with Inquisitor Deza without drawing attention to yourself.  After that, you are under his patronage and command.  You may equip yourself at the armory before you leave, however only side arms, my dear.  Transport will be ready for departure in two hours".

Anya stood, "I thank you for your Grace and your faith Canoness Mother.  I will not let you down".  Anya took the Canoness's hand and kissed the Emperor's seal ring on her wedding finger.  "Go and serve your Father the Emperor and dedicate your life to his service and glory", the Canoness replied, kissing Anya full on the lips.

Two hours later, Anya took her place next to three other Sisters on the transport ship 'Ahn Volen', a battered goods carrier which also transported prospectors and labor looking for cheap travel.  She led the younger women to some bunks and decided to sleep.  Better to be fully refreshed, things were about to get very interesting.

Mac sighed as he exited the manor belonging to his former employer, Lord Daimu of Theseus, the planet he was now stuck on. All thanks to lowly criminals blowing up his ship. Well, "lowly criminals" might not be entirely true. Yes, the people who blew his ship up were lowly criminal scum from this planet who probably would do anything for money, but the one who had ordered them to blow it up was something far from "lowly".
Two weeks ago, Mac had been hired by Lord Daimu to investigate the theft of some family heirloom that had been with Daimu's family for generations. Some kind of powersword said to have once been touched by the Emperor, although Mac seriously doubted it. Anyway, Mac had investigated the theft, and evidence later found pointed towards the work of a master burglar who went by the nickname of "Max". This of course explained why it had taken so long to find out who it had been that stole the powersword, or at least that is what Mac thought. Before figuring out that it had been "Max", Mac had already learned that "Max" was one of those "Thiefs-for-hire" types. You know, people you go to if you want to steal something but don't have the ability to steal it yourself. So already before visiting "Max" to confront him with facts, Mac already knew that "Max" would not be in possession of the stolen artifact. But confronting "Max" with facts had served its purpose, as the thief had scurried to warn his employer of Mac after their meeting, not knowing that he was being trailed by Mac. And who was the thief's employer? "Why some other Lord named Julius!"
"Why is it, that every freaking noble in this empire with the exception of his holiness himself are bloody corrupt thieves and scoundrels?!" Mac muttered low enough so that nobody could've heard him, even if they were standing just 10 centimeters from him.
Now that his suspicions was pointed towards Lord Julius, all Mac needed was confirmation, and to get confirmation he of course would have to find and see the bloody sword for himself. And that required him to break into the Lord Julius's manor. Which had consumed time. And in that time, his great corrupt lordship had of course hired thiefs to go and blow his(Mac's) ship in an attempt to scare Mac off the case. "Bloody aristocrats!" But before Mac had gotten the news of his ship blowing up, he had already broken into, found and taken pictures of the powersword. "So your efforts were wasted Lord Julius, your efforts were wasted!"
But now Mac stands there, outside his employers manor, report and pictures delivered and his money collected, but all that at the cost of his ship.
"Now what am I suppose to do? This money isn't enough to buy myself a new ship, and all the nobles and rich on this planet were to corrupt to ever give me the money I would need to buy a new ship. Do I really need to start planning for spending the next few months on this planet?" Mac shuddered at the thought "No! I will absolutely not spend months or years on this bloody chunk of rock to work for these stuck up soulless monsters in an attempt to scrap together enough money to get off this globe of crap!" Mac knew exactly who he would have to go to and with determination in his voice he pointed up into the sky and exclaimed "TO THE INQUISITION, SAVIOURS OF MEN AND WALLETS!"

((Things written in "Italics" is Mac's thoughts. Things written like "this" is Mac speaking, and the rest is exposition that explains the story that Mac was thinking about, just in a less colourful and less subjective form of what Mac was thinking. Also, I dunno if cameras exists in this world, but heck, in a world that has invented SPACECRAFTS, I bet something similar exists.))

Inquisition Headquarters, Theseus, Orpheus Sector
377.688.M41

The massive black fortress of the Inquisition awaited those who responded to the inquisitor's summons.  The structure stood imposinly before Rahl, the capitol of Theseus.  Almost a kilometer high, its shadow was a constant reminder to the populus that the Inquisition was always looming over them.  The tower's decorations,  massive banners of Inquisition "I"s, Skulls, and statues, were placed to lull any attackers into believe the structure was harmless.  Thousands of gun emplacements quietly hid as banner perches and strange looking statues.  In the four-hundred and seventeen years since its construction, the guns have only fired once.  An ill planned Ork Waaagh! targeted Theseus for an unknown reason.  Within 59 minutes of the Waaagh! entering orbit, 70% of the fleet was reduced to slag.  Not a single living Ork made it planetside.  Since the event, life on Theseus has been quiet and cautious.

Within two week's time, Inquisitor Deza's forces were rounded up and on their way to the Ares star system.

The Unrelenting, Orbiting Ares Prime
377.688.M41

The Unrelenting exited into real space without a hitch.  Ares Prime laid before the warship.  Coulds whisped across the planets service, beautifully contrasting with the purple continents and blue oceans.  Ares, aside from being the home of the Ol'Tan clan, was also known for having a strange mineral composition which dyed the landscape violet.  The planet eyed the ship with quiet interest, pondering if it would be a savior or its destroyer.

Suddenly, warning klaxons began wailing across the ship.  Previously unknown and undetected orbital platforms locked on to the Unrelenting.  Hundreds of cannons and torpedo tubes pointed at the fleet, ready to annihilate within a moment's notice.

The deck of the ship was alive with activity; shields were raised, primary and secondary weapon systems were quickly roused from their sleep, and crewman manned their stations.

"We are being hailed, sir, by an Alexander Sprat.  He claims to be the acting governor of Ares Prime and is demanding our surrender."

General Bronn sat in his command throne, rubbin the bridge of his nose in exasperation.  "He's an anxious one.  Didn't even have time to hail him first. Very well, put him through."  He addressed the pict screen that came to life before his seat.  "This is General Charles Bronn of the Imperial Guard.  Identify yourself."

"This is acting planetary governor Alexander Sprat" replied a face on the screen.  A man in his mid-70s with thinning air came into view and gave the general a good idea of who he was dealing with.  The general suppressed a smile as he could see the man visibly tremble at the thought of almost blowing an Imperial vessel to a million pieces.  "Did you say the Imperial Guard?  Why are you here?"

"I will ask the questions," replied General Bronn tersely.  "Disengage your orbital defenses immediately before I am forced to take action."  He hoped his bluff worked.  There was no way the battleship would be able to take down all of the orbital statiosn without serious damage to the mission.  When this was over and done with, he was going to have his intelligence officer shot.

The governor, fortunately, rightly feared the Emperor's Hammer and the planetary defenses went back into slumber.  "It is done.  Now, if I may, what are you doing orbiting over my planet?"

The general quickly filled him in the operation and martial law was declared shortly after on Ares Prime.  Within hours, the Imperial Guard disembarked from The Unrelenting.

Date Unknown.

"Status report"  The scowling face on the pict screen barked.

A mousey-looking individual looked up at the screen.  He placed the fission welder he had been previously using back on his work table.  "Preparations are nearly complete, my lord."

"Excellent" bared the face and the screen went blank.

Untill the Inquisitorial Party arived, there was little for Horrace to do. Well, other than to be another Commissar to the crew of the Unrelenting. But with over a hundred-thousand crewmen and a handfull of Commissars permanently assigned to the ship, there was little Horrace could contribute.
To keep himself occupied, he had volunteerd to help oversee the deployment of the Guardsmen unto the planet. The operation was well planned and there were only a few marginal errors in the deployment.
Horrace had served many years with the Guard, yet it never ceased to amaze him how much materiel and men the Departemento Munitorum had available. And while there were only 6 regiments being deployed, the numbers were staggering. Thousands upon thousands of Guardsmen. Hundreds of Chimera Armoured Transports and Sentinel Walkers, artillery batteries that would flatten cities in scant minutes and cargoholds so stocked up with tanks that one cold barely squeeze between them. If the uprising could not be nipped in the bud, it could surely be crushed by the might of the Emperor's Hammer.
Within the next day, all Guardsmen would be planetside, as would be the necessary armour and artillery. But with all the materiel stocked up in the battleship and the accompanying cargovessels, it would be two more weeks at least before everything was on the surface of Ares Prime.
Horrace was stalking one of the landing bays, keeping an eye out for trouble and indiscipline. Horrace had built up the reputation of appearing out of nowhere and catching the Guardsmen offguard when he served with the Cadian 412th as a Junior-Commissar. As he did now with a handfull of Guardsmen waiting to be shipped planetside. Brimlockers by the look of their uniform.
Horrace loomed over the shoulder of one of the men, huddled around a crate. The ones oposite to him sprang to attention and saluted Horrace with a loud and clear ""Sir!". The rest of the group saluted him a second later. Horrace eyed the cards on the crate.
"Cards? We're not gambling, are we soldiers?" Horrace said in a grim voice.
"N..no sir! Just a friendly game of Go Fish, sir. No wagers. Just passing the time 'till we get the order to embark, sir." One of the guardsmen replied.
"You've nothing better to do?" Horrace asked equally grim. "Lasguns?"
"Cleaned and charged, ready to fire, sir."
Horrace grabbed one of the guns, it was indeed cleaned well and fully operational.
"Kit?"
"All packed up, sir."
Horrace pulled on of the packs out of the stack and opened it. Keeping one eye on the men, he saw none of them flinch at the inspection. And the pack was indeed packed orderly and well.
"Primers?"
All the guardsmen pulled their primers out of their uniforms.
"Very good men. You may continue your game. But keep in mind that if I or any other officer find you gambling, you are to be flogged and locked up. The Emperor protects."
The men responded with the Death Incantation in chorus, before saluting him once more and returning to their game.

It had been a week since Alexander had left Theseus with his team and if the warp currents would stay this stable they should arrive in the Ares system relatively soon.
And what a team it was... since his recruitment of Dorian others had found their way to him within 2 weeks.
A Mac Tavor who was... well what was he? It didn't matter much a collegue of his that he trusted had told him that if needed someone to get inside something and comeback with info Mac was the guy he needed. The Ol'Tan are a notorious cartel and apparently not even the Inquisition can get all that they want hopefully the man would not let him down. There was no room for error on this mission.
The Vindicare Assassin Kiel had joined them on the day of their depature waiting for them on Alexanders yacht. He had been on Theseus for atleast 5 days before that though. Alexander had entered his office after another unsuccessful research session on the Ol'Tan in the library only to find a small dataslate that was encrypted to his genetic fingerprint. It only contained the words "I am here." together with the serial number his Vindicare contact had given him. He wasn't sure yet what to think of that yet... either it was unneccesary bravado or he had thought that Alexander would have exspected him to make his pressence known which really hadn't been neccesary since with the title Vindicare came a certainy exspectation of skill and staying invisible until departure on Theseus shouldn't have been that difficult for a man of his kind. Well he had infiltrated Inquisitorial Headquarters without anyone noticing... atleast the man was exceptionally skilled.
3 Days before depature Celestine Anya de Varagine had found her way to Theseus. He didn't get a chance to talk much to her before their depature since she spent most of her time in prayer in one of the HQs many chapels or in the library since she was there on an official errand of Valina but seemed eager and motivated and that was all he had needed to know before they left.
Then there was his techpriest like all men of his calling he was more in the background constantly in some part of the ship fixing something or mumbling something to please the machine spirits and whatever he was doing was working... the ship ran smoothly and radiated a feeling of...content? He decided not to think much about it since the Mechanicus and their servants were a law unto themselves. He was content in the knowledge that whatever Valorus Octavian was doing he was doing good.

The travels so far had been comparibly comfortable since they were onboard his personal yacht the Lancea Domini. While not as big and by no means as luxorious as many of its brethern ships it provided enough comfort and room for personal recreation for everyone to busy themselves with their own form of preparation (Except maybe for the Vindicare since the ship itself wasn't long enough to give him adequate targeting practice but he would just have to make due) and pass as the scion of a rich noble family which usually was his disguise of choice. He wasn't sure how he'd approach the Ol'Tan yet.

Alexander spent most of his time practicing his swordmanship in the gym, going over the files Karl prepared for him, sharing a few evening drinks with Dorian while talking about their previous missions and playing rigicide with the Sororitas Valina had sent him. Anya was a perfect example of what the Sisters of Battle represented, blind adherence to the Church while being utterly lethal. Normally these kind of people didn't interest Alexander much as being an Inquisitor oftentimes ment things weren't as black and white as many believed them to be. But there was something more to her which made him never miss their Regicide appointments so far. He told himself that it was the fact that she was a remarkably skilled regicide player and that he wanted to atleast rudimentary bond with his team, not the fact that she was incredibly beautiful a fact she either seemed to be blissfully unaware of or didn't care about.

Alexander wiped the sweat of his brow after a particularily rewarding practice session with the Combat Servitors who seemed a lot more lethal after Valorus had a look at them.He had lost track of time during his trainning and it was almost time for his Regicide session with Anya in the Star chamber and he still needed to freshen up.

Dorian spent the travel training, drawing sketches of pin-up girls, decorating his weapons and conversing about his expiriences with Inquisitor Deza over a bottle of amaseque(Dunno how it's spelled or what type of drink it is, but I'm guessing that it's a type of brandy or w/e :/)). Dorian was now busy of tattoing an Imperial Aquila on his left forearm. He was quite skilled with the needle and was the one who tattoed his entire gang members. Tattoing and drawing was a sort of hobby of his. He most often spent the little free time he had practicing this skill.
- Ahh... perfect!- He smiled to himself and admired his job well done. the tattoo would heal in a day or two.- now onto you.- he picked up his meltagun. The pinup girl drawn on it was fading, and Dorian started to refresh the image. he had quite a supply of oil paint. Dorian putted on his spectacles with magnifying capabilities and started working.

Mac spent the travels mostly in the library. Most of the time he was focused on his mission, so he was trying to find information about the Ol'Tan clan. But even here, aboard an inquisitorial vessel, in an inquisition library, there was little to no real info on them. "This is going to be quite the challenge." Mac had smiled whenever his mind went to that particular thought.
When Mac wasn't sleeping, eating or to absorbed in finding information, he would either be found training or bothering the other members of this team. Standing around the Techpriest Octavian, asking questions, trying to learn new things about the machines he was working on. Attempting to find out who or where the assassin that Mac was convinced his Inquisitor boss had hired was. Or just generally talk with his colleagues.
This time he would be talking to Dorian it would seem, as he found him drawing something on his meltagun.
"Good day Mr. Dorian." Mac greeted him and sat down on a chair about 1 meter from Dorian "What are the paintings for? Do they increase the strength of the gun?" Mac joked without any ill-will.
