First when I begin with magic hero, the next hero that I buy is tactic one, than a hero with life magic(if the first hero knows other kind).
I mean mostly 3 heroes who know life, order and tactic, then when I develop them I choose what combinations from magic skills I want.

For tactic I prefer:
order spells-teleport,dispel
life-song of peace,martyr,mass fervor
nature-quick sand
chaos-confusion/cloud of confusion

I know of only one strategy, hold more towns than opponent, if you have to sacrifice a town save your army via caravan and don't let him benefit from it too much(buy all the troops, recapture as soon as possible) of course that specific powers of your creatures and heroes play a role but still they will quickly fall to overwhelming numbers and vice-versa, in essence it all comes down to how fast you can recruit.

The strategy in this game is really deep.  I am stuck in the last scenario of the Nature campaign in the original game.  How do I beat this level?  My extremely noob strategy is a sort of guerilla warfare - just put everything into one army (usually 2 heroes, 5 units) that keeps moving around the map, leaving all towns without units.  If towns get taken, my sole army just takes it back.  Meanwhile I keep replenishing the forces of my one army, keep conquering new towns, and keep getting resources.  It's basically a war of attrition.  Eventually the computer runs out of resources and units, and I win by number.

I know this is not a very smart way to play (I played this game a long time ago, but only recently started playing really seriously).  My above strategy does not work in the last scenario of the nature campaign at all.  Red keeps sending tons and tons of heroes and units.  Meanwhile, I can't seem to locate all the Red towns to completely vanquish them.  Teal is gradually approaching as well.  I tried to divide my forces and have some defend the towns, but eventually Red gets too strong to defend against.  Any ideas?

Really primitive strategy. You should recruit a few more heroes and at least some rudimentary army. Boost new heroes with Dreaming teachers and such things. I started using "lot of heroes" strategy recently, while playing A Viking We Shall Go! (h3) and Science of Darkness (h4). I also used some heroes as scouts (in h4). "One big army" is nightmare on bigger maps.

Thanks.  My problem is that if I spread out my forces, the low level heroes just cannot handle the onslaught.  What are Dreaming teachers?  May they are my answer to leveling my weak heroes.

Dreaming teachers give you growing experience,so you can level your low level heroes with them.

Nah... It's an adventure object, a dragon with his hands before him. When you visit it with a hero, it automatically gives you 500 experience. You can visit each only once, but every next gives you more xp. (second gives 1000 xp, third 1500 etc.) Also, there are "learning stones" that also give xp but always 1000.

It was tough, but I beat that last scenario.  At some point I just gave up trying to deal with Red.  The suggestion of leveling up some heroes was a good one.  I did that and I was able to occupy a few towns long enough to raise one strong army for Elwin to march to the final boss.

Speaking of strategies, I got a bunch of questions about the basic mechanics of the game.

1) Referring to the Thieves' Guild: in the army graph, does it take into account the strength of units and heroes?  What I mean is: does it only reflect the numerical power of your army, or does it also take into account whether you have stronger units and stronger heroes?  For example, if you have a level 10 hero and a level 2 unit, and your opponent has a level 1 hero and a level 1 unit, would the graph show that your army is stronger?

2) Does a hero keep his faction after it has acquired a new class?  For example, after a Knight becomes, say, a General, does it remain a Life hero for the purpose of effecting morale?

3) Your unit attacks simultaneously with the target opponent unit who is retaliating against you, but if your unit has first strike, then your unit attacks first, is that right?

4) Unless your unit has unlimited retaliation, it can only retaliate once even though it is attacked by more than one unit, until your unit has had its turn, correct?  For example, let's say your Champion is attacked by a Wolf and retaliated, then attacked by a Tiger before the Champion has had its turn, the Champion cannot retaliate against Tiger, correct?  Does your unit keep its retaliation opportunity if it didn't retaliate the first time it was attacked?  For example, if your Champion is attacked by a unit that has Fear and cannot be retaliated against, it can still retaliate when attacked by another unit that can be retaliated against before the Champion has had its turn, correct?

5) Does Leadership affect other heroes in the same army?  That is, does it increase the morale of other heroes in the same army?

2, 3 and 4:
Yes.
5:
IIRC, no, but not totally sure...
Give me some time to check number 1 and 5.
EDIT:
Number 5 is no.
Number 1- yes, it also represents your troop quality, not only numbers. Heroes and their levels are also counted.
You can check these things with map editor easily.

I only have two, but these should always apply.

1) Always try to get Combat for heroes who join fights.

Even the Beastmaster is a solid advanced class by sheer virtue of being an extremely tough summoner. The bonus to summon wolf is just a token bonus - the point is that a summoner who can basically survive all but the strongest attacks (and you'll have to burn through his resurrection potions after you kill him the first time - not to mention his retaliation strikes are going to HURT) is by default a solid character.
The survival of your hero should be top priority in battle, and in helping you achieve this no other skill rivals Combat.

2) Always try to get Nobility for heroes who'd rather avoid combat.

Stealth also helps somewhat. Thing is Nobility directly improves your game without your hero ever needing to enter combat. Think of it as a global passive bonus which is always on - you will want this on your secondary heroes as much as possible.

Scouting is an excellent tree to pursue and let me give you some advice while doing so. At lvl 2 immediately take advanced scouting. This allow you to see exact troop counts and you can make much more informed decisions about what to and not to attack the rest of the game. Now go for GM pathfinding. This removes all terrain penalty and speeds you army by 50 percent. The idea is you want to fly around the map. Looting treasure and artifacts and interest points, towns and mines and everything else significantly faster than your enemy, giving you the edge. Now GM scouting itself. Sight radius in h4 is much better that the others due to shroud of war. It's always nice. You also get great bonuses like detailed info on his heroes and towns. Now with your faster movement and better sight, engage him on your terms. And fight a geurilla war in the meantime
