Yeah the shackles of war are kind of rare to come across, but you can take them off your hero and put them in your "backpack" if you think you may need to retreat. Only problem is if you get attacked unexpected.

I've had a bad experience with shackles. It is realy booring to watch the whole battle if there are many monsters in it. (but there's quick combat)

At first Review! I won 200k or 7xlegion with 3lvl immune. Hm, I built (RoE map) 55lvl hero with speed, expert earth and water, shackles of war etc. The enemy reaches me, and cloned a legion black dragon. But poor allied AI won the enemy! IMPOSSIBLE but AI won..

I was recently playing the last map of the "Playing with Fire" campaign.  One of my 4 high level heros was Tazar, and he happened to have only a modest army on him at the time; I hadn't had enough money to buy out a good army for him yet.  He had managed to sneak onto the island with the two Necropoli via Water Walk, and had really just been harassing the enemy - taking the sulfur mine that I wanted, a gold mine, etc.  I had been hoping to take a lightly defended town but since that enemy had town portal, it didn't happen.  I was also looking for chances to catch one of his armies in the open but that didn't happen either.  Between the size of his army, not having Ballistics or enough spell points to do a lot of casting of Earthquake, I didn't have the appetite for a siege against a heavily defended town - the arrow tower/armorer bug is definitely present in H3 Complete for the Mac.  I was just about to give up on his efforts and bring him back to the mainland, when one of the major enemy heroes comes out and attacks him.  The enemy hero had no question a better army, but just couldn't do anywhere near enough damage to Tazar to make a difference.  After defeating him, I could walk into an unoccupied town, and then Town Portal back and forth to pick up a much better army and come back to grab the other town.

Tazars armorer never worked for me, so I just skip him.

I shouldn't have posted this "AI gave me Armor of the damned" thing.

Now everybody posts "dumb things the Ai has done" (the usual stuff) instead of "cool things".

Heh. My apologies for piling onto the unfortunate trend.
I think the problem is that things that the AI does well and aren't well known (and therefore not as interesting for discussion) are few and far between.  Dumb things that the AI does often tends to make it into tips threads.  The dumb AI things that have been in here have been rare cases which you can't rely on happening.

To return to the main topic:  When the AI does get Fly, it does a really good job of pulling off sneak attacks on unoccupied castles.  For that matter, AI heroes with no towns left do a really good job of beelining toward the nearest unoccupied town, even when hidden by shroud/Cover of Darkness, although that probably belongs more in a "Does the AI cheat" type thread.

here was one of the dumber things i saw the AI do:

AI is green.  they summon a ship for this really small lake where there is nowhere to go:

after taking over their base i found they wasted money on a lighthouse

this was a map with 'no water' set yet somehow had this one lake.  maybe had to do with my rmg.txt idk

in terms of smart stuff i have seen the AI do, they are always annoying making you retaliate with dragons to hit your own creatures

agree regarding cover of darkness usages by the AI, they are so annoying with that.

also they are sometimes good at hiding in weird places on the map to avoid being noticed.

when the AI has ballistics, maybe it's just me, but it seems like they break the gate turn one way too often.

The AI is programmed to use every special building it can find, every dwelling, every well, skill tree, temple, fountain, and of course the cover of darkness.
It being annoying is mainly because the Cover is annoying, not the AI...

Yes, the AI can perfectly place its heroes so that you have a hard time finding them or just can't get close enough to see how much troops they have...

With expert ballistics, you have like 90% chance to open the gate at first try. Don't know the exact numbers and I am not in the mood to look them up, but in my games I am rather annoyed when I miss the gatefirst turn than I would be happy of opening it, it's just what usually happens: Shoot, shoot, door open.

Same goes for AI morale... It sometimes feels like cheating. You have it all planned perfectly, then the stack gets morale and hits a stack it shouldn't reach...
Wouldn't consider it AI cheating, it's more a type of "all in" strategy: it knows it can't win, so why not go for the chance of morale?

The AI does a lot of dumb and good things.

Once the computer attacked a castle of mine, he mainly had a HUGE stack of pit lords and some minor stacks. after some battling he only had a large stack of pit lords remaining. I tried to destroy his ballista with some archangels but he blinded them. when my drawbridge was destroyed he walked towards it with the pit lords. BUT EVERY SINGLE TURN after that he used 'teleportation' on the pit lords to send them next to the archangels, and then he walked towards the destroyed drawbridge again.

Good things: after a long fight i only had a stack of chaos hydras left with the retaliation spell. Enemy slowed it and i couldnt believe it, he was actualy kiting my hydras, making it impossible to attack his stacks while he took me down with spells, most insane AI plays i have ever seen.

I also like how the AI uses your dragons to damage your own creatures. Another nice thing is that the groups split up whenever you have liches/magogs in your army

Battle

I don't know whether I play bad, computer plays excelent or the AI is just so lucky in my battles.

Metataxer's revenge-my army-titans,arch mage,genies in 5 stacks.
His army-the usual conflux army-numbers 400 per troop except the legion of magic elementals,50 phoenixes and legion of pixies.

I equip the speed arties, knowing the enemy is has them as well and my genies speed is 15,while his magic elementals has 14.

So,one MG block the gate, second cast haste on titans, they shoot the storm elementals, get morale and shoot the ice elemental, leaving less the 100 of them. The other MGs get in some wall in front of my titans, ready for an attack by the phoenixes.

What happens next? The phoenixes attack the wall, energy elementals attack at the gate, pixies come to attack my MGs and BOOM-he TELEPORTS his earth elementals, whose lucky strike kills 47 of my titans.

Many times when I don't know the exact trick needed, the AI makes me reload.

One time I played "Arrogance", I remember having a nice castle army, relying more or less on ranged units. I was quite shocked when AI used "forgetfulness" to cripple them. I mean - it was a small map, not much time for building up, and yet AI got mageguild and water magic of sufficient level, and it used the spell in combat!

This is kinda unrelated but... I think this is a glitch. On Heroes 3 has anyone played with an allied computer player before and entered their castle? Upon leaving my allies castle I was allowed to steal all their creatures from their town and use them in my army. To make things better it even let me control their heroes and move them about. It's been ages since I've done this as I don't like playing allied but just wondering if that was a glitch or not as it seems a little cheeky.

@ whitebeard
I had the same once, It happened on accident and i never were able to do it again when i tried.

I have yet seen another mystery of the AI

I attacked his hero with a big army and his hero only had 2 archangels. Since i was playing Fortress he was able to begin the fight.

He casted armegedon, killing a lot of my creatures but leaving his AA alive. and then fled

He did not have Armageddons blade.

I guess he calculated his Archangels would benefit from the 15% magic resist or something, sneaky snow

Gladly i catched him shortly later
