I don't abuse my children or anything.

I don't even use the bamboo stick my mom used to use on my siblings when we were kids =p

Shyranis, that is in so many ways such a wrong sentence. And paired with this:

it's actually frightening.

But as with everything, it makes no sense to debate this. You'll do what you do, no matter what.

Children being "good" is usually the result of fair, firm and consistent discipline. Children need boundaries and need the boundaries to be consistently enforced.

And then they grow up and try to earn respect through fear just like their parents did.

Fear is effective but should not be the paving stone of discipline.

A child reaches for fire, you warn him/her that it will hurt, if you touch it. That keeps the child at-bay with fear, but then you must educate him/her on the uses of fire.

To understand Elodin you need to understand the hive mindset of the evangelical right.

To understand the hive mindset of the evangelical right, you need to understand Dr. James Dobson.

I stumbled upon an article where certain states were going to start charging parents if their child was late to school or skipped. Another classic example of what happens when we hitchhike too far on the left. Anything to inundate us with more laws and more government trying to do things as they see fit.

In England parents of frequently truant children get persecuted, but they are of course contacted if the child's attendance falls below standards.

Quote:
Penalty notices
As an alternative to prosecution, authorised local authority staff, police officers and headteachers can issue penalty notices to parents of children who are not attending school regularly. The penalty is £50, rising to £100 if not paid within 28 days. If you fail to pay a penalty fine, you will be prosecuted.

Taking you to court
The local authority may prosecute you (they don’t have to issue a penalty notice first) and this could result in a more severe penalty.
You could get a fine of up to £2,500, a community order or, in extreme cases, a jail sentence of up to three months. If the court thinks it will help to stop your child missing school, it may also impose a Parenting Order.

Parenting Order
A Parenting Order is a court order which requires you to attend parenting education or support classes. You will also have to do whatever the court says is necessary to improve your child’s behaviour and attendance at school.

Also paying students to report truants leaves a really bad taste in my mouth.

I would appreciate it if you would not comment about me personally and would instead comment on the issues. You are wrong about me by the way. I in no way have a hive mindset and some of my evangelical brothers would wrongly accuse me of being a heretic.

One does not need a hive mindset to recognize that children need discipline that is fair, firm and consistent.

Quote:

In the end violence will always lead to more violence.

That is false. I was spanked at times as a child and I am not a violent person. I've never initiated a fight but I have had to fight at times. Neither I nor my brother nor my sisters have ever been taken to jail.

My children were spanked growing up and none of them are violent people. None of them have been taken to jail.

When children were spanked in school there were few serious problems in school. When parents spanked their children at home there were relatively few problems with juvenile delinquents.

Now many urban schools have such an undisciplined atmosphere that the "good" children are often afraid to go to school. Lack of spanking increases violence and criminal activity among the young people who growing into adulthood.

Elodin, do you think that your 'punishment' (I assume it was punishment ), was fair or just? I'm asking for your current opinion and your opinion at the time.

Edit: This is related as I'm trying to make a point, nothing personal .

Yes. A parent should not discipline in anger. With a clear head you can mete out "justice."
