Card Games

I'm an avid card player, and in this thread I'd like to talk about not so well know universal card games as Poker and Bridge (which would have to get their own threads).

My first card game - and actually a game I play very often for some time now - that ko introduce, is called Mü. (No joke).

Frankly, this game is everything a card game should be.

The game is played with a special set of 60 cards, 5 suits with 12 cards each. The cards have values from 0 to 9 with two 1s and two 7s in each suit.

However, this value decides trick taking only (9 highest, 0 lowest); at the end of a game, when all tricks are made, cards are worth points; 9s and 1s have NO value at all, 6s and 7s count 2 points each, and all other cards count one point, so that there alre 60 points in all.

The game can be played with 4, 5 and 6 players, and in every constellation 2 players (which will vary in each game) play against the rest.

All cards are dealt, then the BIDDING starts. Bidding is done by laying cards face-up before you on the table (revealing them to the others). A player is never out of the bidding and can exceed the highest number of open cards only by 1 card. So the first player will either reveal 1 card or none. If the first player did reveal 1 card, the second can reveal 0, 1 or 2).
The more cards a player reveals - should he become the "chief", that is, the player who revealed most and namer of the highest trump - the more points must he and partner earn to win the game (which is different depending on the number of players).

The bidding ends, when everyone consecutively passes (that is, a player can bid alone, card, for card).

Now the second highest bidder is vice-chief; he MUST determine a trump. Trump is either a suit (for example red) or a NUMBER (for example 1).
Next comes the chief. He MAY elect a trump suit or number, but can also decide to play without trumps, in which case only the Vice's  are trump.

THEN the chief choses parther for this game which can be everyone EXCEPT the vice-chief.
A player can only declare something trump which has been revealed by him/her.

Chief-named trumps are highest. So if the Vice named Yellow as trump and the Chief named Red, then Red 9 is highest trump and yellow 0 lowest, with red 0 being the trump right above yellow 9.
If one player names a number the card(s) that are both are highest trumps. Example: Vice names Red, Chief names 1s. In this case the highest trumps are the two red 1s, then the 8 other 1s (all equal in rank), then all the other red cards.
In case there are equal-valued cards, the first one played makes the trick.

So after that is established, game proceeds with the Chief playing the first card. All revealed cards for bidding are kept face open on the table for everyone to see.
The rules for the game are standard. People have to follow suit, when they can, if not they MAY trump.
All players keep their tricks for thenselves, and are counting points separately (but adding results for the current team).

The number of cards the Chief revealed define how many points the Chief team must make to win. If that was done, everyone scores the points individually made and the Chief team both scores a bonus that depends on the the number of cards revealed AND the trump the Chief picked: Suit is lowest, then come 1s and 7s, then the other numbers, with No-Trump being highest.

If the necessary points were NOT scored, everyone STILL scores their points, but the Chief gets a malus depending on how wrong he was, while the Vice's team players will get a bonus based on that.

I used to play a lot of card games, including Bridge, Gin, and etc.

Don't play as much anymore.  Some of my friends and I occasionally have poker nights (very causal) where we play poker, of course, but other fun games like Screw Your Neighbor and 31.  

I'm also fond of a commercially purchased card game called phase 10, which I believe could be played with a standard deck of cards, and of course Uno is fun with lots of people.

We play 31 differently actually.

We play only with 32 cards (2-6 not used).
Dealer gives himself TWO hands of 3 cards each. He can pick one, have a look and decide whether to keep it or take the other hand (wnich he doesn't know).
The rejected hand is now the "exchange market". The rest of the talon isn't needed for the current game.
If there is no immediate blitz, player left from the dealer may
a) do nothing (without finishing)
b) end roceedings (doing nothing else than ending it) upon which everyone else has a turn
c) exchange ONE card from the middle
d) exchange his complete hand with the complete middle.

3 equal cards are 30 1/2.
3 Aces immediately finish the round - everyone has to pay a token.

This way it's much less random.

Anyway, these are more leisure of fun games. Mü is a very serious game, more like Bridge, even though less formal. You have to really know what you are doing.

3-5 player and 52 cards ok.

Begins to share one card for each one player. The biggest one and the same winner. Artu says 1 Because he is a cauldron of 13. Corribus says one, when the screen aces. I say zero. If Corribus says zero, so I guess I should say 1. Since the opening of 1 plus 1 divider. Artu to win, because there is not a single country. Corribus gets 0 points, Artu 11 point and 10 point for me. The promise of reality gets 10 points plus 1 point for a single card. 10 if the decision has been correct, the point of 20.
Now, Artu's own shift to share our 2 cards. Corribus to 2. When he was 2, and 3 hearts. I say 1 I have a sweet aces (and four hearts). Artu can decide on anything or want to say 1 or 2. Since the opening of 2 plus 1 divider. Corribus to start with, because he is the most 2. Corribus corresponds to 2 Hearts. I received the ace of hearts. Arthur seems to cross 13. I will show four hearts. Artu show six hearts. Corribus 3 hearts. Artu broke the promise of zero, he loses the point as well Corribus. I get 12 points.

That's actually a very well known game, each country having their own name, I suppose.

There are slightly altered commercial versions, called "Wizard" and "Wizard Extreme" in Germany, Wizard simply adds 8 cards, 4 Wizards and 4 Fools, with Wizards being always high AND PLAYABLE (so that, if you have a 12 (King) in a suit and a Wizard (which have no suits), and someone plays the 13 (the Ace), you may just trump the Axe with the Wizard), and Fools always low (and second one played always beats first one), while Wizard Extreme, is played with chips, where you have to predict the tricks you make separate for each color and where there is an additional option for a player to become the "spoil-sport" and getting his points based on how wrong the rest is.

Wizard Extreme is actually a pretty brillant game, which is part of our card game portfolio and played fairly regularly within our round.
