A few guidelines that I like to follow for hero class choosing.

In general- go with two heroes.
One hero should specialize in tactics
One hero should specialize in your hometown magic
The other hero should preferably have some skill in a different school of magic.
No hero should specialize in two kinds of magic- you only need one to cast spells from, and if you like two types of magic, have the two heroes learn a type apiece.  The exception is if you can get an archmage or a demonologist- these are both very nice classes, even though you might not use one school of magic enough to be worth it.
Put a few levels into combat, so your heroes will survive.
Remember that these guidelines are not set in stone- if you've got a particular combination in mind, go for it.

Beyond these guidelines I like to diversify.  I have no particular favorite class, although illusionist and warden both work pretty well.  When possible, I choose different classes every game.  It makes an interesting game even more interesting.

I don't really know, because as said before, the bonuses aren't really that effective enough to be the main goal.
Whatever classes my heroes end up being is usually unintentional. But it is fun to see.
The only reason I really try to stay with a certain class is because which-ever the two skill classes are, it is more likely to get a choice of skill in that class when you level up.

Usually end up with some class involving the combat class as one of them, because I always choose the combat skill for every hero unless they are a pure archmage; the combat skill developed prevents them from being killed in one hit.

From my memory, I like the Archmage class, and my heroes also usually end up as this later on since I like filling out all 5 skill slots from any power-up bonus buildings on the map (since they are free in that they don't require a level-up).
Also kind of like the Seer, because you get the scouting radius bonus.

A skill class I do not really like is the summoner, because then you get wolves\sprites\leps and I find them annoying when they aren't part of my main army.

easy question, demonologist of course.
once, I won against a much more powerful army just because I could summon a huge army of cerberi.

I enjoy the thieves the most.

The ability to sneak behind guards, getting experience and ressources than anyone else and see the enemy before they see you.

Not to mention, the experience gained, can be given to all heroes by going past monsters, iIRC.

I'd normally go for combat after I get stealth up, so my hero can start challenging the computer and take their towns, then advanced death (level 2 spells) and expert order (level 3 spells), so I can get mire (to capture enemy heroes who try to run away much easier, without risking loosing terrain) and teleport (in battle, against shooters mostly, iIRC).

Finally, if the computer is still around, it's probably too strong for me to take it out with any single hero, but by then I'd most often have builded up a fire diviner in my own area, who'll thrown armageddon and have black dragons, quickly taking care of the computer.

So thieves it is.

Edit: If no restrictions I'd probably go for azure dragons as farvortie class.

Here's a few things to think about :

In general- I always take  4-5 heroes depending on map. Not less than 4
depending on castle, always take heroes of 2 alignments but the other has to be the alignment with tactics usually. (eg. with chaos u go death always because of dk, with nature u go life because of knight)
heroes of 2 alignment because if 3, your morale will kill u. (exept if your lucky with artifacts)
every hero has to have combat, depending on map.
The only good classes that give bonuses worth mentioning are field marshall, demonologist , general, assassin , guildmaster, crusador.

So a well made army with eg. life would look:
order hero, life hero , life hero, knight, angels crusaders and either fifth hero or angels in 2 stacks.

2 heroes per army, rather than per map.  I'm not quite so foolish as to try and take on an XL map with just 2 heroes, and if you've got more than 2 heroes in one army the xp gets split so many ways that your heroes are all going to have painfully low levels.  Also 2 heroes plus 2 level 1 creatures, a level 2 creature, a level 3 creature, and a level 4 creature adds up nicely to 7 troops.

Of course, if you have more than one town your creature options open up tremendously, but that's a topic for another thread.

I haven't bothered to find any expansions, so I play only the maps from the basic game.  I like to play the larger maps, with less in the way of border guards.  Rushes are stopped just by the distance between players.  A few of my favorites, if you feel like looking them up, are Zanfas' Challenge, Sea Politics, and Land of our Forefathers.  In all cases, if you want to complete the map quickly, you need to start developing 2+ powerful groups.

Side note: as I recall, by the time I finished Zanfas' Challenge the first time, I was using every single army slot- and the only one that didn't have at least one hero of level 5 or up was the group of one imp at the trading post.

Second side note: I rarely if ever play with actual people because of my penchant for larger maps and long turns.  Not certain how relevant that is here.

Well, I would really recommend you to try a few games online against real players, since the AI doesn't give you a real challenge even on impossible. If you have never played online, it's not really possible to be a good h4 player :/
The maps you play are some I used to play 01-02 when I didn't play online. Problem with those maps are that they are a bit boring and without imagination of what maps could be. + They are not balanced at all so not really posslble to play them online.

I would recommend you to check up a few player made maps here:
http://www.toheroes.com/h4maps/medium.html

Also, I bet you dont use equilibris for your games. Even though you play only against computer opponents, you could check it out for a bit of variety. Since h4 is so unbalanced, nobody uses it to play online.

Archmage(the class with all magic skills if I remember its name well),Demonologist and Necromancer are my favourites.
Archmage:Can learn all spell, and spells are a very important part of Heroes games.
Demonologist:Summons powerful demons in the army.
Necromancer:Raises dead to bolster its numbers.
