Bob Dylan's Nobel speech. Not surprised at all that he's an admirer of Moby Dick. I recommend opening the subtitles if English is not your mother tongue.

Meeh, it's kind of a cliche to say motherhood is the toughest job. Not that I underestimate what they do but the idea behind the prank is unoriginal. I saw it coming from a mile away but then I thought, well, mothers dont always have to stand up, they do have breaks when the kid's sleeping etc etc, so I guess it will turn out something else.

But it's still ART. Whether the statement is cliché or not doesn't matter much, it's how the statement is made.

I didn't celebrate it with a post, then, but I actually agreed with your fine post on January 26th in the "current leaders" thread in answer to fred - the one with the meaningful photo.

Well, you can consider it art in the broadest sense, like how a regular guy playing Girl From Ipanema on the beach with an acoustic guitar is also art. But pranks are conventionally not considered art and when one is linked in a thread called “what is art,” I expect an exceptionally creative idea. This, on the other hand, is probably the thousandth variant of the same metaphor: 10 seconds search

Ah, so if something isn't completely original, it isn't art?
That would make a lot of stuff considered "art" pretty mundane, wouldn't it?
It would also mean, that most music and movies/TV shows and books aren't really art, since basically all topics have been covered a million times...

Art is a freedom of speech, own thought, and know-how. When freedom of speech, but religion, law, public people, it can be also own thought.. Know-how is a important  in art works, when some is skilful face, etc another landscape, thus drew the same thing in many times.. Ok I talked several artists with.. Then I checked on the internet, in there photo showed 17 aged nude girls in a lake by American artist, but I don't think your country can accept.. Abother what? Religion can't accept nude.. Then public people never bought before museo, etc notices value, for example.. or thought/belief that 17 aged girls photo advocates pedos and then tell to authoritative.. But true 18 aged.. And so hard matter.. When ageism or freedom of speech and law, etc for example.. I'm artist too..

That’s an oversimplification of what I said. Once again, if you present a medium that is not conventionally considered art as artistic, you are building up an expectation of originality: "The way this guy sells cars is art!" Whether you are saying it as a figure of speech or being literal, what you -most probably- mean is that there is something exceptionally different that involves creative thinking and unique skill about the way he sells cars.

Btw, yes, the distinction isnt binary, even quite subjective sometimes but a lot music and tv is indeed not art but entertainment/showbiz. Nothing wrong with that, quality entertainment requires craft.

I think, I don't see the point you are making. The medium you mention is conventionalle considered art since the 80s, but what we actually have here is even older, because it's simple TV.
Why is this art? Because it's not a fake. It's not satire, like the link you gave, where things are enacted. Calling it a "prank" is misleading. It's more like a social experiment.
I mean, satire builds a lot on overstatement - but then, everyone KNOWS it's just "sarire"; making it "real" is a different beast.
When things seem REAL, they get a different dimension - think of the Milgram experiment.

This is actually an interesting topic that still puzzles me to the day.
I remember I even took an Art History course in college just to solve my puzzlement. I still do not know what it is.
Then I was in a long relationship with an Art Major who was pretty much my opposite personality.
I still do not know what art is to this day.
But I knew back then it was the opposite of logic.
However, in work, or the high-level application of a skill, using your "art brain" rather than being scientific about it, seems to yield better results.

@artu, you are over rationalizing and taking it too literally, nobody pretended being a mother is the toughest job. Andrew Tate once emphasized : a job you can do while wearing pajamas can't be tough.

Joke aside, this prank/experiment composition is following a path often used in all forms of art, which is a proper build structure, a development then an unexpected climax creating a sudden and intense feeling, as we can see on some selected candidates stirring reactions. That moment was why I called it art, goal achieved. It is an tender and strong ode to mothers, without overdoing or going political, which could have been a common trap.

JJ is on to something when he said (years ago, here) art must be felt or experienced. (As opposed to understood)

David, the stuff in the Vatican and various european capitals, is definitely art. But I cannot consider anything in the MOMA (guilty, been there) art because 1. it does not look good.
This simplistic assessment is the only accurate one, because beauty=truth in nature.. a shark in formaldahyde is abhorrent and a banana taped to a wall is just being stupid.

To the "everything is art" people. I'm sorry, I felt (or more accurately  'thought' this way 20yrs ago, and sadly only now have the conviction to re-assert sorry you're full of s***. Picasso is not a "genius" - he's a schizofrenic. "Artist"= needs psychotheraphy

It's a 'viewpoint' - doesn't mean it has any value, outside of the "hey-there's-somebody-else-like-me

So, art=asthetic(beauty)=truth

Did I just prove ALL art has value because it can be beautiful to SOMEONE?
