Do you ever find your interests odd?

Because I do.

To me, it seems like there exists two sides of me which are in many ways opposites. The emotional side and the will side. I see the will side as the true me and the emotional side as something, which is a product of the body I have. At least I find myself agreeing with me will side.

Now this may not make much sense to you right now, so I'll give an example. Sorry in advance, because this example might be a little long.

I follow soccer teams and I cheer for soccer teams, but I believe it is a huge waste of time. I believe the sport can be very good to perform, if done in moderation, but I am not talking about playing yourself. No I am talking about when pro club teams meet.

Today, they played champions league and many years ago, I decided I'd cheer for teams with base in my country. The teams participating lost, and despite I'd expect myself not to care, I find myself sad. I have a negative emotional response running right now, despite I can't justify it. All because I decided to cheer for a team many years ago, a team which have nothing to do with me and my life.

The same story can be told and re-told, but I'll fixate on soccer in this example.
So I did not see anything interested in this sport before I was 10, even winning european championships didn't seem like anything special before that age. However one day when I was 10, I decided to follow soccer.

I decided to cheer for the national team, to cheer for the local club team, to cheer for teams from my country when playing against teams from other countries and finally to cheer for some semi-randomly choosen foreign team (or rather teams).

And despite this decision was made with great easyness, here many years later, I find that I have irrelevant emotional input in my life. I feel glad when whatever or whoever I cheer for wins and I feel sad in the opposite situation and that's despite how my real life may be at the given moment of time.

The years went by and I eventually stopped cheering for the foreign teams, for the national team and even for the local team, but I still cheer for club teams when facing teams from other countries and I don't like it.

So do you've any interests, which you actually disagree with, yourself?

hey, it's the same thing with girls

every interest is odd if it isn't shared with other people. I'm completely odd. here other boys are interested in sports, cars, etc... and their main goal in life is to have any job and earn money.
I know just nothing about cars and sports, but can talk about philosophy or psychology for example, which are topics that most people don't know, don't care about and find absolutely boring and make you look like a smartass.
also I'm not looking for work and money, because I tend to not really see the benefits for myself (money has little value to me) but rather the problem it creates on a larger scale, when people only care about their salary without worrying about the possible consequences of their work.

My interests are odd? Definitely. In general I orbit far away in the space of abstracion. I'm interested in philosophy and pyschology like Faunch, but at the same time study electronics and computer engineering, program in free time and I'm generally into (real!) sience. In general, wherever I go, I am always different.

Also, as a trance DJ and beginning producer, I can hardly find anyone who shares the interest. All people listening to that music I know from internet.
"How can one ever listen to music without lyrics? That's weird" Even though trance nowdays is much more sophisticated than mainstream cheese and majority of music in general.

All in all, I do lots of different things, but do all of them alone. Some people just admire it with words: "aaaa, that's great", and their interest ends here.

Suprisingly, most of people I know are interested in such trivial things, like films, books, music (popular or rock older than myself), sport, their pets. Or drinking parties.
Well, that's pretty logical, but I prefer to create things than just consume them. I am the one who rules the world.

yeah, can understand that "trivial things" can be funny. the problem, from what I know, is that most people are just bored at school, or are nothing more than tools at work, and as soon as they get out of there, they just want the fastest and easiest way to have fun.

now I have lot of free time, and even though I spend most of the time not doing much, I still create or learn a little (that little being more efficient than school by the way. here school is terrible at what it's supposed to do best ) and I don't feel a urge to have easy fun like it seems to be the case with most young people.

I am not sure I follow you. You can't create if you have not consumed a lot, it is a base. How could one write a good story without first reading other stories, how could one make a good music without consuming first a lot of music (ok, both examples supposing you already studied about writing and composing mechanics, and this for long years, otherwise you will remain an amateur).

Things like those do not fall in your hands from the sky. Sport trivial? We talk again in 20 years, when you will be too rusted if never practiced. And pets are lovely! Drinking parties, umm, ok. Depends who I make drink and how I take advantage of the situation.

Having trouble understanding what point Forf is trying to make with his OP but whatever. I guess this is about having interests that are not eh... easily understood and shared by other people?

Eh I don't actually.

Let's see... main interests.

Judo - most popular sport around here so...
Gaming - everybody games nowadays.
Anime & Manga - Is no longer nerdy and outcasty either. ****, 95% of the male population around here watches Naruto/Bleach.
Dogs - pretty much everyone likes dogs...

So eh, my interests are very unspectacular. Ah... I do write fanfiction (like my town creations for HoMM) now and then and that's not something that I generally share with my RL friends, but they're generally appreciated in this place so it doesn't feel odd either.

Naruto/Bleach

T_T. But theyre so bad. I stopped reading them half a year ago (I lost interest in them waaaay before that, but somehow I just kept reading because there was a time where I really liekd it) and I just caught up with the current chapters yesterday and today since I was bored and had time (my papers are done) and holy **** I didnt miss any of that Naruto ****. LOL SO BAD.
And well I found bleach to be a bit more exciting with the "new start" scenario thing but it suffers from the same mistakes it always has and the whole "damn....what do I do now?Any ideas? No? Aww **** it lets just give him a different sword, hairstyle and make him even MORE powerfull for no reason again. Worked every time so far.". Tite Kubo lol... Everytime I read Naruto I want to carve his heart out with a blunt and rusty spoon. So annoying lol.

Yeah they suck hard, Bleach especially. Naruto is at least looking like its nearing its end.

I keep reading 'em cuz it feels like ya know... I dunno it's more out of habit than enjoyment.

But ya know... it appeals to the general population. My efforts in introducing something like Berserk to people usually ends with them saying "that artstyle is so weird" ^^

...How is Bleach worse than that ****ing annoying, dimwitted dip**** of a hero that has about as much character development and intellect as a stone on the bottom of the sea?! Haaha sorry dont mind me. I was disappointed when they jumped from Naruto to "Shipüden" (or whatever its called) and Naruto hadnt evolved. At all. Ever since I get the urge to boil babyseals and poke their eyes out with a trident made of the ivory of elephants that were killed while being sodomized by satan when I read Naruto and hear that guy give some big speech.
Bleach isnt up to much I agree but I really dig the artstyle, which is one of the major things that makes me read a manga. If I dont like the art-style the manga can be as good as it wants, I have difficulties staying interest.

Because while Naruto himself is made of retardism, the manga still has Shikamaru and Choji who are fairly cool characters imo.

Bleach has no one. I mean, ****, what does Ichigo like to do in his free time? What are his interests? I don't ****ing know cuz all he ever does is fight. If ya wanna talk zero character that guy is where it's at. At least we know that Naruto likes to devour ramen with his old sensei in his free time.

The artstyle is really awesome though, I agree with that.

Well, I like reading gamebooks such as the World of Darkness and maybe a little bit of Dungeons and Dragons. I always like creating my own worlds to play on these games. But I never get to do it cause in the end, it's boring to me to play.

I'm extremely fond of reading and talking about urban legends supernatural, paranormal and other such unexplained phenomena even though I don't believe that any of these are actually real. To me, it's just a way to entertain myself.

Finally and most important...

I always felt nothing but contempt against my country and my fellow countrymen. Something like McGregor's monologue "It's a shame to be Scottish!" from Trainspotting. I was feeling the same way for my country. But now that my country is actually threatened and hated on by foreigners, I am overwhelmed by a dire urge to fight for it and defend it against those who I would consider enemies.

I think my interests are quite common:
Reading books (science fiction, comedic fantasy (especially Pratchett), mythology and history), listening to music, parties with friends, watching movies, gaming, surfing in the Internet.
In my work - electrochemistry or more precisely electrochemistry of lithium-ion batteries.

@ OhforfSake
Viewed from your perspective, this means that any interest is meaningless. Let us look at your example about football. At first sight there are 22 players who chase a ball and that's it. But in fact there are rules, tactic of the teams, beautiful performances of players and goals, that grabs your interest.  If you are ultra supporter and beat other people because your club then I will consider it like odd (even twist) interest. But if you only joy of the game it’s nothing wrong. Just we have a need to waste some time without serious thoughts.

We can discuss many other examples. If you read a good novel, listen a music, watch a movie or a picture that will not feed you but only enjoy you. If we follow your logic, the art is completely meaningless. The things can not be considered only on a primitive level - eating and working. Because we are not robots. Look Maslows hierarchy of needs.

In fact, we spend most of our money for our interests (hobbies). Our nature is on that way - not only eating and surviving like all other species, but to have interests (goals) to follow. People are looking for every way to have fun and if you think that supporting a football club is strange, better look around you and see what interests people have. Probably some people will think your interests are “weird” because they have other “weird” interests. Other will thing that your interests are pretty common. It’s all about personal taste and style.

Some people have interests in cars, animals, clothes shopping, sports and whatnot. Psychologists call them substitutes when you missing something. In my opinion it’s not so simple. The interests are not simply substitutes of something, but they are part of us. Without them we won’t endure a single day. We'll become robots.

Nowadays advertisements play an important role in the people's selection of interests. The media makes everything looks fancy and increasing your interest. We're masters of self-delusion
