In fact, we spend most of our money for our interests (hobbies). Our nature is on that way - not only eating and surviving like all other species, but to have interests (goals) to follow.

The question is what you do to follow the goal and what the actual goal is. Supporting your favourite team may end up with millions of fans paying their money for a few stars, who earn millions of dollars every season. And corporations strive to milk them even more. And what you get in reward? Fancy spectator's gadgets? Ability to sit in front of TV?

I would rather do sport myself, as it is creative activity. But most of people are passive consumers and take whatever is offered to them.
It simply doesn't work for me.

but you may admit it is very tempting. but also, most people probably don't look further than what is offered to them. in most case they seem to only consider what concerns them directly and the immediate gain. for example, in discourse of voluntary servitude, tyrants provide their subjects with entertainments to make them accept more easily the tiranny, because they just see the immediate gain, they aren't aware of the whole process and not willing to think about it.

Some people have interests in cars, animals, clothes shopping, sports and whatnot. Psychologists call them substitutes when you missing something. In my opinion it’s not so simple. The interests are not simply substitutes of something, but they are part of us. Without them we won’t endure a single day. We'll become robots.

I can't say for sure, but I would say that in most cases, if not all, it could probably be compared to a drug (for the psychological effects) don't you sometimes feel like you become slave of your interests?

Entertainment and for some people, feeling of being accepted into a group (football fans) without any real "requirement".

I love watching good teams like FC Barcelona. What they do looks like art, it's just pleasurable to see.

Please, Barcelona, art?
That farce they put up? That's not art, that's garbage.

Not a fan of FCB I take it?

I'm not really into any team. I like Real and FCB both. I don't care for their backgrounds if they keep me entertained.

what are you trying to say? Also it really depends what you are pooling ressources together for and collaborating on whether youre weird. IRC is just a means of communication.

"IRC? Whats IRC?"
*explains it*
"Why are you on IRC instead of Facebook then?"
Basically the sheer stupidity over the paradigram they was presenting.
And what do they do? They play football(fair enough), and sit a lot on facebook(boring).

The lenghts to what they have taken the drama with real is beyond idiotic. El Clasico used to be one of the very few football matches I watched but with the way they're going there's zero football and 200% drama and cheating. Just pathetic.

@ Warmonger
In these two sentences that you quoted, I meant the interests in general. I did not mean only the football. You're right about yourself. You prefer rather to do sport than spend money for season tickets, kits, shawls and etc. But after you're in a game forum I suppose you feed the game industry if you're not a pirate . And that's my point, everyone of us has a weak spot and spend a lot of money for something. For example a new game is released and you heard about it but after you look the trailer, screenshots and read some positive feedbacks you're thinking "I want that game now" and the interest becomes a goal. It doesn't matter if it's for games, books, movies, rims for a car, cloths, travelling, skydiving or something else. We spend money because we want our toys and entertainments and the corporates know that making fancy ads.

The thread almost derail with the football topic. OhforfSake gave only example for one of his interests

Ha, you're wrong. I rarely buy games and play only the very best ones, which are just worth appreciation. Still, gaming does not belong to most  profitable activities, but as you said everyone ahs weak spots and just need to take a rest.
Also, if you visited the board more often, you'd know I'm into modding and programming. Playing is nice, but what if you can make something that others will enjoy to play?

Football is a good example, as most of people are interested in in. Also, it involves big vents, big crowds and big money. Many hobbies can be celebrated in small groups of friends or totally unerground clubs or associations.

I wouldn't consider my interests odd, but they are odd combined, since many of they are considered antithetical to one another. Let me give two examples.

- I've practiced gymnastics on a national level (jock)
- I've built my own computers, and I'm very technologically proficient (geek)

- I have a masters in science
- I study theology in my spare time

I'm not interested in cars or football, but rather philosophy and politics.

But reading the heroes forums I'd bet many of the people here are INTJ type personalities (Jung and Briggs Myers typology). Those interested in psychology would perhaps know of it. If not, why not test yourself and find out? Click

I'm not sure how they are supposed to oppose each other.

and doesn't it make you odd in conversation to be mainly knowledgeable about "nerdy" subjects? even if you have a lot of culture, sometimes it seems that being completely ignorant, but having only watched the latest football match helps more for communicating

people could just discuss for hours about what team or what brand of beer is better, but try talking about books and the conversation ends instantly, with people awkwardly looking each others

true for me

yeah, rather true too I think. it's most likely a very rare quality?

might be true. I try to do that, but we are all more or less driven by emotions

I used to be like that, just to find out that things don't go as planned at all.

No, but you're welcome to share it as well.
The question is, if you've interests you don't really like. Like me with soccer.
In some cases, I'd guess what Fauch wrote could be a possible explanation:
Quote:

Viewed from your perspective, this means that any interest is meaningless.

No. I don't understand how you derived that conclusion. I think any interest which is only an interest due to the feelings it produce, is... well I maybe wouldn't say meaningless, but rather, a waste of time.

I would not call other people's interests meaningless. That's not for me to judge, only those "other people", in my opinion.

By the way, I like your post. It's nicely written.

I'll look at your link later btw., right now is not such a good time, but it hasn't been for some time now, so I thought I should at least show I'm still interesting in the topic.

Your interests don't necessarily define you. My interests are fairly normal, but I'm weird as hell.

I like movies, video games, girls, food, drink, music, sports, outdoor adventure stuff, and long, hot, leisurely baths.

Well unlike some .. ahem .... I'm completely normal.  Normal interests, normal pastimes and hobbies.

I guess a lot of people like to think of themselves as being different or weird, but thanks to the internet there isn't really anything different to experience that other's haven't at least heard of.

I guess for me to raise an eyebrow it would have to be someone telling me ... they like to be suspended upside down with a dead hamster in their mouth (ha that had you going didn't it!), blind folded and dunked into a vat of warmed milk with flying insects.

EDIT:  And now my point of reference has edited (sanitized) his post!!!

It's because it's not entirely true. For example, the used underwear thing isn't particularly appealing to me. Tentacles are definitely hot though.

well very few people of my agge, 16, are interested in politics
of course that has changed a bit now, since I study Social science in school now and there is a lot of fun politics involved in that

since few people in my age are interested in politics, I wonder if it is so wise to let 18 year olds vote, since a lot of them voted on the enviromentalist party because "they are being nice to animals!!!"
or they vote on the anti-immigration party because an immigrant threw a rock at them once and because I am slowly indoctrinating my class to vote on them (it's actually working, I have one guy who thinks that they are racist but that will change...)
