With all shows recent mass cancellation, it becomes clear that the show must have exceptional audience if it reached 5th season, and godly if it went until 10th. Dallas show, for example, had over 360 millions viewers for its cliffhangers as "who shot JR" and lasted 13 seasons, which is an utopia today.

Not really. CSI  will go into the 12th season next year - and that's only Las Vegas.
The Simpsons are in their 23rd season now.

I bet for every one you can name that stays good after 4-5 seasons, I can name 2 dozen that declined in quality or were outright cancelled by that point.

Oh I know a lot that went downhill but Del was pretty much saying that was the fact for every show. I know a lot that are equal in quality or better after season 4. I'll admit that there's more that decline but to imply that it's like that for most is wrong.

Most shows will decline with time, because usually the writers put much more thought into the first couple of seasons to sell the idea. Fortunately Dexter has some great writers that have managed to keep the show fresh to this day.

Speaking of that, what do people think of the new season? I think it's a hell of a lot better than season 5. I didn't much like season 5. I actually thought it was one of the more boring ones, in the same way as season 3 was. I'm loving this one already. The two serial killers are amazing.

Yes, season 6 is looking really good so far. It has many interesting sub-plots that could get really interesting.

I actually think the Tooth Fairy would have been a good storyline for the entire season. He was a rather good character even though he was very short lived.

Of corse, because that's only natural (and this effect is there with ALL sequels everywhere, for example with movies and computer games... ).
There is a reason for that as well. On one hand the show must continually feature what makes it good in the first place. On the other yu can't just deliver "more of the same", because that would get old after a while, meaning "decline".

So that means, you have to continually develop the characters, the setting, the situation and so on, leaving enough basical motives, but also introducing ever new ones.

A good example for "how to make a good series" is - in this respect - 24. This includes a regular, controlled, deliberately planned final. (Although I'm not sure whether this is on-topic: interestingly enough there are those who claim that 24 is part of the reason why Obama won the election: by portraying the black president Palmer the way they did and paving the way for a lot of people to come to grips with the possibility.)

A good example for "how to screw a series up" is Dead Zone (although there are many more of those).

But that's of course in the nature of things. Premium quality is a pretty elusive thing, otherwise it wouldn't be premium quality but run of the mill.

Well 24 is certainly an excellent show but I think that's a stretch.

Seriously, though, even with 24 - I'm on season 5 right now and while I still am enjoying it quite a bit, I am noticing that a lot of plot conventions are continuously recycled, such that I can predict, at least generally, how things will play out.

Well, I don't want to throw any spoilers about, but I think that season 5 is a rather stunning season, even with 4 seasons in the back. It starts with a real "blast", and without saying too much, it will end with one as well - depending on how you choose to see it in fact with more than one -, not to mention the ones in between, and even if you ARE very good in forseeing the ways of the script writers, season 5 will have a couple of surprises in store. There is a reason that many rate this season as the best of them all.

What I actually DO like a lot in 24 is the fact that they virtually don't make any prisoners. The brown stuff is really happening, and no matter whether the really big desaster can be avoided, in the end, they always find a way to leave their main character in deeper misery than before.

I mean, there certainly is a habitual effect here. The action is so dense and the situations are heaped so continuously on top of each other, that by season 5 you are basically expecting everything every second.
It's like a rollercoaster. You get used to it.

Finished the final season 24 on Sunday.
I have to say, the last 8 hours of that season may be the most intensive ones in the whole series.
Without spoiling anyything here, I think, Jack's line in episode 21, "You dumb snow have swallowed it!", has the potential to become a classic.

It could be the greatest show if it did not constantly used the american cliché as "my family first" and "I did this to protect you".
Becomes tedious and highly predictable after a while. The cliffhangers are mainly based on kidnapping someone and forcing a relative to do stupid things.

Going off topic, I can't understand how people can like 'Friends'. It's the most unfunny comedies I've ever seen in my entire life. Everything about it is just stupid. Don't get me wrong, I like the odd bit of stupid humour but Friends isn't that type of humour that I like. I find some of the humour to be very forced.

YES SOMEBODY ELSE SEES THE LIGHT ON FRIENDS.

Seriously though, Coupling is way, WAY superior to their American Counterpart, like always. All Friends has is like... Lisa Kudrow being a quirky retard in every episode (which is funny <3) and that's it.

Then again it really isn't surprising that the British version of a show is better than the American one, because the latter country is a country that actually thinks Jack Black, Martin Lawrence and Eddie Murphy are "funny" (ew.barf.)

Yay, finally someone who has heard about Coupling. That show is SO much better than Friends - the actors are better, the story is funnier, and it even has a content.

Just finished season 5.  Over all a very good season, better than the last couple IMO.  A few events were a little unbelievable (outfitting an armed Russian sub in a commercial shipdock, able to be taken over by four terrorists?  I don't think so), but still pretty entertaining.

Unfortunately, half the regular cast was killed off.

Yup, no prisoners taken.

Started with Breaking Bad (we always watch a couple of shows parallel, so it's not more than 3 episodes or so a week).
Amazing.

I think it is the price they pay for being forced to fit all action (find terrorists, catch them) in 24 hours real time. Almost everything is unbelievable (Jack taking a plane, making hostages, search in every baggage and back to headquarters in less than 60 minutes, that was defying Einstein theories + LA traffic). I doubt any ever saw a russian nuclear submarine (full armed) in Los Angeles dock.

Guarded by 4 unharmed guys. Comic.

For those of you who have a soft spot in their hearts for the Western genre, check out AMC's brand new "Hell on Wheels". Seems like it will be a decent show.

Preach it, Alci. Oh, and any series that has <3 Jack Davenport <3 and <3 Sarah Alexander <3 as their two lead actors can never be bad <3
