I really dont get how can anyone prefer stargate over battlestar galactica

In battlestar, there are twists (it's arguable whether they're good or bad but they exist), characters are more developed (deeper), stripped of all and on the run when survival is the only thing left and the question of how do different characters deal with it, pilosophical aspects, religious aspects, the unknown scenario (your fav character may die in the next episode)

Stargate on the other hand - 95% of the episodes are literally the same episode done over and over - 4 characters, each episode you pretty much know exactly who is going to die the moment you see them, each episode follows the same scenario "they go to a planet, face an impossible situation and find the solution in the last second" and then next week its the same bloody scenario (just another planet now), 4 man squad that's literally invincible and so resourceful that they have defeated not an army but something along the lines of galaxy of armies and when that wasnt enough they went to another galaxy just so they can defeat another galaxy of armies... 4 people !!!!!!
Ohh yeah and even though planet earth is insignificant to aliens (with billions of potential slaves as opposed to other significant planets that have vast populations of 500 people) it seems that 90% of the planets in the galaxy are worshiping in one form or another the same gods our ancient civilizations worshipped (makes perfect sense) its just that on other planets arrows are probably the most advanced weapons they have managed to think of throughout thousands of years of evolution.. yup amazing show...

Battlestar Galactica?

Honestly, the 1st season was easily the worst season IMO. It was average at best, then it picked up big time in the 2nd and 3rd seasons. That's what the critics seem to think also.

Well tastes are like anus, everyone has one.

SGA continues to thrive because although there is continuity the show isn't really dependent on it from week to week in the same way as  BSG currently is. The basic concept of 4 people travelling through a gate to a distant world pretty much allows many stories to stand on their own individually, and the show is good at making sure the continuity they throw in there doesn't overwhelm viewers who dont watch it religiously.

Then BSG is completely humorless and takes itself WAY too seriously. Myself I get hurt by the hand camera which constantly tries to suggest there is something important happening while is not. Then the acting in SGA is formidable, McKay and O'Neil are immense (again, my taste) while all actors in BSG look sick.

Then re-watchability. I could not force myself to see again BSG even once, having a strong feeling of deja vu, while I watched over and over SGA for 5-6 times entirely.

And then, again personal opinion: SGA HAS awesome MUSIC themes (Joel Goldsmith), whole BSG use the leitmotiv for anything, being "themeless" , now tell me if you can sing any theme from BSG right now. The music from it has no much sense, it is a bunch of old instruments packed for the sake of new sonorities, ignoring the core of the music, which is the theme.

Then BSG is dark. I don't enjoy dark shows, I want action and fun.

Finally the most important: I worked one full year for a complete modification of Heroes 3 into Stargate Atlantis universe (which I consider my best wog work until now), and that's me:  instead of useless argue about one show or another quality, I prefer to materialize my admiration and try to share with others on a solid base.

Goes to simply show that SGA isn't memorable, while BSG is.

"All along the Watchtower"?
In any case, the music is really, really FITTING; also you may want to read the wki article about it: BSG Music Facts

I don't think it's dark - not at all. I mean, sure, the MAIN SETTING or STARTING CONDITION is quite a dark one, and there are of course very dark moments, but all in all it's a very strong plea for hope, for never to give up, for trying the impossible and for carrying on, for tolerance, for humanity and for striving to get into the light, so-to-speak.
There are enough shows that offer "action and fun" as opposed to "fuel to think", so I was quite thankful that the action part was subdued.

While that's certainly true, the 1st season is by no means "sucky". I'd rather call it more conventional.

I was talking about original music composed exclusively for the show, not a remix or arrangement of Dylan/Hendrix. What now, put Mozart in NCIS and suddenly have the best show music?

I was kidding.

In fact I enjoy any music style where you can remove the drums and still have a quality music. The drums are artificially creating the feeling of drama and raise the adrenaline. But in the end they are just a rhythmic noise and often are used to cover the lack of melody.

Like in BSG, for example.

However, the drums motif from Terminator is epic.

First of all, yeah, I understand you're a musician so it can be an issue to you, me I dont really care about the music all that much coz content and mindpoking is what I truly enjoy...

Fun action indeed it is, but die hard is fun action, its something you watch and forget about it three minutes later, fight club, usual suspects are good movies, those stick with you for more than 3 minutes, in that sense stargate is IMO (and of course anuses and all that) fun action, I watched it as well but it lacks tension it lacks mindpoking, you know exactly whats gonna happen most of the time... BSG on the other hand digs much deeper, into the characters, into the story, into many aspects it plays with and it (at least) tries to make you wonder what would you do in that situation, characters die all around you, it keeps you on your toes, in one episode they win in another they lose and even the times they win there always is a price like there usually is in real life, in stargate its like "there are 4 of us and you only have a few fleets with millions of soldiers, you cant touch this man" let's be frank, in all the episodes where they have faced an almost certain death (which is 99% of the episodes) did you doubt for a second that some insane 1 in 12343434242525436523462 chance plan will save their asses ? Its like watching your fav team play when you know that they simply cant lose, its just not the same thing to me at least....

But then again I have a slight problem with "scheme shows"...

House - first scene someone gets sick, second scene house convinces his team to treat him/her (or the team convinces house) poking and probing, mistake after mistake, dude is literally dying in half an hour and then boom some random event makes House see the light and the dude is saved...

Its like if you see one episode you've seen them all... It's boring /lazy writing IMO... Stargate follows the same pattern... For some reason viewers respond better to less creativity, I dont know why is that.....

Creativity concept is perceived differently from people to people. JJ calls it "mind fuel", you call it "deeper". Myself I call it empiric experiment, it leaves marks on you, but don't try to explain why, you will always fail.

You and JJ try to explain why BSG is good show in 20 lines/3 minutes work, while SGA (being less creative - from your point of view) stimulated my creativity during one year of hard work. You will understand then why I am not ready to give up on the show's quality, it leaved a durable mark on me. If one does not like it, that's fine by me, but don't come and tell cheap BS that people liking it are less creative and you won the lottery with BSG. They both are only shows.

Never said liking it means you're less creative nor that my taste is better than yours, I just said how I view certain type of shows and that I dont understand why certain "types" that are of more "simple" nature get more viewers....

You can be inspired by twilight movies or reality shows, people get stimulated by many things... cheap, fun and snowty or sophisticated, high maintenance with a lot of headache to each their own, neither right or wrong but both stimulating

I don't think, you can even compare the two shows. SG has been immensely successful, 10 seasons, a couple of movies, one successful spinoff, one not so successful one.
That alone must count for something.
In comparison, BSG with its 4 season and 3 movie length features seems pale - but BSG tells ONE story. In effect it's a 60 hours movie.
It's a bit like comparing The Shield with CSI. Makes no sense, because they deliver a completely different experience.

However, I'd like to add something for the music. If you look at amazon for Soundtracks of BSG and SG, you'll find a wealth of it for BSG, but only a season 1 soundtrack for SG. Why do you think that is so?
In my mind the music score of BSG is a very integral part of the series and contributes beautifully and breathtakingly to the overall atmosphere.
And what is called so diminishingly a "Dylan/Hendrix" remix is actually a masterpiece, since this is, if you remember, part of the STORY - it's NOT so that someone said, hey, I like All along the Watchtower, let's rearrange it, it will make the music score better. Instead, the authors wrote the text in, and McCreary HAD TO re-arrange it. Certainly, the end of season 3 is one of the most awesome moments of TV and movie history with regard to "the role of music in TV and movie shows" - if you know the song, that is.

Which is only showing that we are discussing this from quite different point of views. There are some who don't like the show, and that is fine.
But let's not compare the shows, that makes no sense.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the full version of the song (with the Intro):

It wasn't my intention to compare. I think SGA fans rushed on BSG once SGA ended prematurely and tried to find a deja-vu substitute, but the show being totally different, a feeling of deception followed. Now, independently from this, I was firstly captivated by BSG during the first season, but less and less with every new season, the very last season looking to me as fruitless attempt to give answers to questions already forgotten and buried under thousand of other questions. In fact, I had no clue what's going on.

Also I had a problem with actors from BSG, all of them being unknown, thus the charisma habit process took some long time, and by that time the show plot took derisory and mystic directions, which didn't help to like them. Maybe the solution would be to see the whole show in a row-as a movie-, but when looking it once a week as I did, I found it pretty arrogant to require me such good memory and personal investment so I can remember why this or that. For me this should be the difference between a multiple seasons/episodes and a well twined movie watched in one evening.

I agree, that watching a show like BSG (or 24, for that matter, or, uhh, Prison Break and so on) once a week is ridiculous. You don't want to watch a thing like BSG over a couple of years.
Of course that is better with a more traditional show without a continuing story.

That said, I have no clue why people would watch these things on TV at all - if you buy, watch and sell fast via Ebay you have minimum costs and maximum freedom to watch, and it's even legitimate.

Agreed with all of that, JJ.  Which is why I'm excited about the way Netflix released House of Cards (i.e., all at once).  Here's hoping this leads to a gradual change in the way TV shows are aired.  Less and less people watch their shows via traditional cable.  Times are changing.  The network that changes first will score big time.

After reading the facts for HoC I agree - we ARE at Video on demand, and things might be working like with Steam for games.

What that means is, that instead switching on TV and zapping around or studying the program, watching for no cost, but having to endure advertisement, this will only be true for Live events, while the rest will be "video on demand", pay per view. Individualized program.

Reminds me that I need to read Zuboff's "The Support Economy".

Babylon 5 was the only show I consistently watched on the air, which was in 1995. I never watched shows because I'm not a routine-based kind of guy and I never quite weaned into it. There's plenty of shows like House that you can sit down and watch regardless of the order, and although they're entertaining, they simply don't match up to the continuity you find in shows such as BSG or Rome, which are basically superlong movies that can delve into the characters and story in a way that the silverscreen can't come close to. I only started watching lots of shows ~2 years ago with my Netflix subscription.

In a way I kind of like the ones that I have to order through DVD because it forces me to set a pace, as opposed to splurging, but either way, streaming/on demand is what made shows watchable for me.

Okay, I've got the entire BSG season 3 here and I'm going to give it another go.

What I recall most clearly about post-season 1 BSG was the ridiculous Boomer baby drama that started giving me nightmarish flashbacks to watching V.
