I liked Spartacus very much. About the sausage festival, can't say I was disturbed much, as when there is sausage, bush is coming, so keep watching.

I just stared House of Cards, good show. A little hard to follow sometimes for someone not from the US because of all the detail about the political system but overall, clever plot that attracts your attention.

And Kevin Spacey is like De Niro till the mid-ninties; a very skilled actor with the sharpness to pick interesting projects.

I just watched the first season of The Newsroom. I want to ask something, all through the episodes there is this heavy criticism of a group called the Tea Party (not the historical event of course), there are some really shocking quotes from them and they are referred by the shows main character as the Taliban of America based on those quotes. Now, is that stuff real or is it just the shows' exaggeration?

I'm going to stop you right there. Here is the Wikipedia page on the movement. If you want to discuss this more, please choose an appropriate thread related to politics. It has a high chance of turning ugly and I'll not have that happening in a thread about television shows.

Right. Spartacus Blood and Sand done.

What can I say? Sam Raimi is in it and it's great.
Don't want to spoil anything here, but it's a perfect and completely un-typical season ending.
Actors are in the main roles BRILLIANT. John Hannah is of course a pretty good name in Europe and is awesome as Batiatus, and Lucy Lawless is probably the bigger name. Together they are what Keith and David are in Six Feet Under - and probably better. Craig Parker, well-known from Legend of the Seeker. Viva Bianca as Ilithya is a stroke of luck - I expect to see her more frequently. She's awesome.
And they LOOK like it: Solonius; Numerius Calavius? Roman faces.

That the women are gosd-looking - well in fact they are NOT.

Varros wife Valeria? Nah. The wife of the magistrate? The wife of Batiatus? Well, yes, she looks as old as she actually is, but looks good anyway. The female slaves? well, OF COURSE! They look good for the most part - I mean, would you expect them to surround themselves with UGLY female slaves? Sure they look fine - but did you watch the arena spectators? Geez.
And the men?
Mixed blessing. The main guys look good - but they are the best. The rest? Well. Not really.

Bottom line is, the show is cool. Unique mix. Brilliant casting. The blood? I think, the technique they display in the last episode is quite classy.
Historical? I still hold the point. The show works out what it wants to use and makes sure to display everything that is different, shockingly in your face.

On the surface it seems to capitalize on sex and violence - and it DOES, but that comes with the territory.

Did someone watch the Canadian show Vikings! by the way?

I agree JJ. I'm a huge fan of the show. Unfortunately I didn't care for the 2nd (true) season as much as the first, and it didn't really have much to do with the new lead as Spartacus. I just thought the writing wasn't quite as good, and the outside-the-gladiator-school-and-on-the-battlefield setting made the mid-range budget a little more obvious. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed it. But compared to the first season it just wasn't as good. Haven't watched the third (and final) season yet so I'm not sure how it ends up.

That's a pity.
I was going for the prequel first, for obvious reasons, and I had my doubts for more seasons of the story, but of course there is enough of it left to go on.

I'm myself watching Homeland and enjoying it thoroughly, in the middle of 2nd season atm. Also enjoyed first season of House Of Cards, pretty brutal in its own way.

@JJ
What's a pity - that the third season is the last? Well, I'm sure you know the story of Spartacus in legend, and particularly how it ends. There wasn't much left the writers could do after that.

No, I mean a pity, that the second season is weaker.

It's clear that the story can last only so far.

Why? It didn't for Kubrick... If you mean TV show and not the Spartacus story by territory, well, you can expect things to be a little more commercial I guess... As I said, I have no objection about the show being fun, but historical or realistic would be the last words I'd pick to describe it, it is the opposite of that, both visually and storywise. When you choose to be so grotesque on the visuals you sacrifice the historical realism anyway...

Artu I completely disagree. "Historically accurate" is a non-commodity anyway, because I don't think anyone is able to recreate the 2100 years distant past "accurately".

But the show does a good job of ... hammering in an impression of a time DIFFERENT, which is what matters: the LANGUAGE; the MORALS; the POLITICS; the SLAVERY thing, and so on.

And what you call "grotesque" is just a little bit of overstatement; if your pulse is at 160 and your blood pressure is up, because you are exerting yourself and fight for your life, and if then an artery is hit, the blood will fountain out.
That has also nothing to do with history either.

Well, I'm not talking about factual accuracy either. Language is English, so I don't know what you mean by that, other than that, all the things you enlisted in capitol letters was WHY I found the show anachronic. Slaves acted too enlightened, morals... women were almost feminists (not much in the first season though), politics again did not take me to the Era. The gore is intentionally grotesque. I think that's too obvious to even discuss.

Anyway JJ, I'm glad it did it for you. I don't know what else to say. When I watched Rome, or even the Gladiator for example, I felt like I was in Roman times, when I watched Spartacus, I didn't. I wasn't being too picky, the flaws were just too many for me. It was fun but that was all. Btw, your post reminded me I downloaded Vikings a few months ago, started watching it. It looks fine, I've just watched an episode yet but my gut tells me it's way better than Spartacus.

I adore the "thick of it", contains strong language, but it's not modern idiotically used, but sensible well prosed swearing. In particular the main character who happens to be an angry Scott whose job is to make sure that the political machine operates.

Series? I watch Allo allo if someone knows it! It is from mid 80's and it is all about WW2. It is actually a parody on that war so it is a comedy but hilarious you should watch. I watch Game of thrones too I know wait for the 4th season
Btw, I have a question. I love war and mid age series, if someone watched it, is Spartacus good?

Midway through the 3rd season of West Wing (English), I'm quite convinced the show has the most intelligent dialogues ever written for any TV show.

Anyone ever watched LEXX? If you are looking for some really PUNK SF series - that's the one. Balancing on the thin line between genius and crap, one thing is for sure - you never saw something like that before.

Aaaaand an advice for those who have fun with stuff like Medium: Afterlife, a Brit take on it, is pretty unsettling. WAY more serious than Medium.
