On the reality television plane, i am currently blazing through the first season of Project Runway. For the uninitiated, it's a show about fashion design. Don't let that fool you though. The show itself is hilarious and amazing. Fashion isn't even that much of a focus point, since it's all about the *contestants* participating in it and almost every person in ProRun 1 a star. I'd recommend it. It's out there on youtube.

and here's a hilarious tubechop to give you a first impression: http://www.tubechop.com/watch/1473026
parts of it JUST FEEL like you're watching an The Office-esque sitcom <3

i am also following the current season of Prorun (which is its 12th), it's not nearly as good, but decent.

The best reality tv show that is airing right now is CAPTURE though. It's a show based on the Hunger Games, basically, and it's pleasant and surprisingly entertaining. AND has one of the best boot orders known to mankind, which also helps.

Midway through the 3rd season of West Wing (English), I'm quite convinced the show has the most intelligent dialogues ever written for any TV show.

That's Aaron Sorkin. The writer behind West Wing, Studio 60 on Sunset Strip and currently The Newsroom. He has a very distinctive style when it comes to dialogues but I think sometimes he overdoes it. Everybody is so sarcastic and witty all the time, ping ponging cleverly crafted comments non-stop... After a while, instead of different characters, you start to see little Aaron Sorkins running all over the place. But he's really good at it, so you watch anyway.

What happened to Dexter?  I'm watching season 7 right now and it's just mediocre.  After the amazing season 4 it's been downhill ever since.

Well, it's one of those subjects that, if you keep prolonging you'll lose believebality. What made Dexter believable was his detachment, but as the show went on and on because of high ratings, something (other than what already happened) had to happen. So he fell in love, became a caring father,  he got away with things without getting caught too many times and then his sister keeping both his secret and his lovers' was way over the top.

The thing about TV series is, ironically, if they succeed, they start to lose their grip because too many things start happen to the characters and that just feels unnatural. I'm glad Breaking Bad is ending in S5, otherwise same thing was going to happen. As of now, only Boardwalk Empire and Mad Men are shows that truly make you believe the story could actually happen the way it did, and I'm not talking about realism, I'm talking about making sense.

That's not strictly true, because depending on the job a character has, things are bound to happen. Dexter, for example, is bound to meet all kinds of weirdos and stuff, so that's not the problem.

The problem is, that there is either repetition or development. The long lasting shows combine the repetitiveness of retelling variations of the same cases over and over again with developments with a bigger cast of characters. Example: CSI (LV); important is that there is a whole bunch of characters, which may in parts be exchanged, meaning, you can let one die or retire or move and get another in, so the character development is secondary but makes for a bit of individual attachment.

That changes, if it's about one person only. This is Dexter or Breaking Bad and many others, which is a lot more difficult. To stay with Dexter - it could also be a Vampire sseries, mind you -, it starts out with Dexter being far outside of the fringe of society, having a big "flaw", and he's disguising or camouflaging himself to appear as safely within, while trying to control his flaw and direct it: he could be a Vampire as well drinking only the blood of criminals.
Now, for a good series, you have to combine repetition with development. You can try to leave the Dexter situation unchanged and concentrate development with the others, the exchangable persons, but you can also try to have the main character himself develop, and THAT is what, then, is leading to the end - one way or another, because there comes the point, then, when the character is "done" - again, this or that way.

Now, with Dexter, the development I see (I'm end of 4th season) is, that he moves from being FAR out of the safe body of society to the fringe of it and further into it, and with him going family and all, it's clear that the aim is to absolve himself from everything and become a real nice guy and all - so it's the plot itself that I expect to change the character of the series from 4th season onwards: you can safely say that up to this point Dexter has been a hunter, but I predict that he will switch to becoming the hunted, since he has more and more to lose and to cover up on one hand, while wanting to share his real self with his immediate family on the other (and find some kind of absolution).

Which I have to guess at this point would have been served better when they had done it in 2 seasons and then end it.

But to make that clear again - it's in the nature of things that a good story as opposed to a string of loosely connected episodes MUST end eventually, and the real feat here is the timing: don't overdo it and find a timely end.

CSI series are different, the main event is one case at a time while there are some continuous sub-plots in the background (relationships between the characters etc etc) while Dexter falls in to the category where the continuous story is the main thing and events framed in single episodes are the sub-plots.

Since, you're in season 4 (I'm in 8), you're not there yet but the thing is, his detachment and lack of empathy was what made Dexter who he is. Now, of course, his camouflage life caused him to change and that's not a problem if you don't push it. But in season 4, the character development is yet not a change of 180 degrees. Yes, the wife and kids change him and what started out as a camouflage eventually causes him to be more caring but still, there is a part of him that is detached and he hides it. As seasons went on and on, he started to become too normal a guy and you just can't be that and keep murdering people like flies at the same time. Put that aside, too many people learned and accepted his secret, like it was just some weird little flaw like cross-dressing at saturday nights or something. When I say, too many things happened to him, I don't mean meeting killers, he seeks them out anyway and even in season 1, he already has a box full of blood slides. But the thing is, there's always some major crime event in Miami and Dexter and his family and co-workers are ALL part of that event not just because of their jobs but on a personal level. You repeat that too many times, it will feel unnatural.

What makes me feel a bit angry about Dexter is the continuously increasing amount of sheer randomness (=luck) involved. The first few seasons it was acceptable if some event changed the situation to dexters side, but with time, it became TOO unbelievable (despite the whole show centering around a hobby killer). As a surplus, in the last episodes, killing people became such an every-day issue, it's awkward. While in season 1-3 he (almost) always planned his killing into the smallest detail, he now does it anywhere and anytime...

artu, have you ever watched The wire? For me also one of the series I believe to be natural/believable. Even more after I watched some documentary (I forgot the name) which, more or less, showed exactly what The wire did...

Yes, I downloaded the whole series, started the first season, it's very realistic and well-written indeed. But then somethings got in the way and I delayed watching it. May start anytime again soon.

Right.
Dexter 4th season is pretty obviously brilliant.
I think, the closing of it - not a cliffhanger at all - was a pretty drastic move, making sure that Dexter won't continue his journey towards absolution.
It makes the 4th season a killer, of course, but it also is indeed a difficult situation, when you think about continuing the show, for reasons more or less mentioned already (this will doubtlessly allow a more repetitive pattern=.
Remains to be seen, though.

Another thing I have to mention is another Brit show - Murphy's Law.
Brits do TV different than the Americans - for one thing a season most often comes with only six episodes, and most shows have a much shorter running time; 2 seasons may see already the end.
In case of Murphy's Law the thing went for 5 seasons, with the quite outstanding James Nesbitt.
I can also point to "Jekyll", a six-part show with him which is a lot of fun.

Anyway, Murphy's Law takes underco´ver police work to a pretty high standard.

Talking about The Wire; I watched the first 3 seasons, and it's pretty intense. You may want to try "Homicide" if you like The Wire.

I just read that there will be a spin-off of Breaking Bad called "Better call Saul", centered around lawyer Saul Goodman.

Hilarious idea. Quote from Wiki:

"I like the idea of a lawyer show in which the main lawyer will do anything it takes to stay out of a court of law. He'll settle on the courthouse steps, whatever it takes to stay out of the courtroom."

Peaky Blinders.  Just watch it. I was afraid it would turn out too much like Boardwalk Empire (post-ww1 mafia story set in degenerated town) but it's so stylish and the polluted, poor streets of England set such a dark mood, it feels different from the start. The cinematography is wonderful and the Martin Scorsese-like use of classic rock in the background is a perfect choice and another mood setter. Acting is first class and the story is elegantly embedded in a historical context. This is good TV, has the potential to turn out into even more. And this is just my impression of the first episode.
