Absolutely Fabulous - 9/10 This is the only toffee nosed, Southern born sitcom I can actually stomach, it strikes a better balance than One Foot in the Grave ever did.

So I'm after four episodes of Netflix's The Witcher and all I can say is that critics and haters can suck my b*lls. Some of the best tv series I watched in a while. It's not perfect, but it is definately worthwile. Good stuff.

It's fun to watch, has good atmosphere, the actors aside from Triss fit their roles nicely (Henry fits Geralts role, but I also like Yeneffers actress, or even the supporting characters like Dandelion or Tissaia), has strong production values and good music.

The time skips are a bit confusing but if you watch carefully you're notice references here and there which help you understand what is going on (I like how they point out events that unfold later on). There might be a bit too much dialogue, but there's enough action to satisfy your needs (and yes, swordfights are flawless). To make things clear I didn't read the books becasue I don't like Sapkowski's style of writing, but I have a bit of knowledge based on the games or the original Polish TV series.

I was a bit skeptical after the first two episodes (I especially miss the Slavic setting from Witcher games), but the next two hit all the right tones for me (for ex. the Striga battle was spot on).

I know there is a lot of hate currently for the series, but I don't give a rats ass. I stopped caring for "internet" opinions a while ago.

Quite the opposite for me, liked first couple of episodes and then came the third that managed to bury a perfectly good story and an amazingly written character under huge piles of smelly poo. FAQ off show! I have read that part of the story and the way it was handled was atrocious.

It's a pretty alright show though, looks good, has stylish action and feels mostly right. I didn't even mind the split narrative across different times, it is easy to make sense out of it. However they did not build up character relations properly if you ask me. Speaking of characters..

I like Cavill as Geralt, he has the right tone, voice and physique. Yennefer is a miss though, she feels pathetic most of the time. Have only read the last wish and the first book so I'm probably missing things but her portrayal just.. doesn't convey power and control. She is wimpy, petulant and prone to childish tantrums. Worse yet, she 'graduates' being mostly useless and then timeskip, she is max level and actually considered top student. Moving on.. Ciri is fine but her face weirds me out for some reason. Also her sidestory was predictable and did not offer much to the story. Foltest is [mod warning] [stop it Elvin] [this is your last warning], the least said about that crappy affair the better. Renfri and Tissaia were good, though I have not encountered the latter in the books so I can't really say if they did her justice. Jaskier was epic. Toss a coin to your witcher on repeat ^^

Ending was a bit meh. Could have used some impact or.. anything really. Looking forward to more.

The most recent. The one which stops you from roaming around with stupid scripted scenes

Ah, don't have a good pc for that yet As far as I know it's good in combat and story so either it's not your kind of game or its earlygame is not interesting enough? Watch an episode and you'll know if it's worth your time.

Well, I am all for a nice scripted introduction, or some short video in  key moment, like the wonders from Civilization, but the Witcher is just pushing that to ridiculous boundaries. Basically every 5 minutes of gameplay, you jump in a scripted scene, and man they are looong.

The scripts decrease once you're past the intro stage.

But yeah, there is a crap ton of talking in the game. I watched the stuff related to the main plot but the extra crap I usually just hit the skip button and then massacred whoever it is that needed massacring.

Might be of interest for the French speaking guys out here.

Engrenages (called Spiral in English) is an utterly awesome show. Only available in Fremch with English subtitles, but totally worth every bother.

@JJ

Which platform? Is it on Netflix or something?

@ Sal

If you liked Game of Thrones, chances are you’ll enjoy the Witcher enough to go along eight episodes. Not as good as early GoT but it’s similar to the final seasons in terms of character depth. Medieval fantasy, no absolute good or bad guys, shifting alliences etc..
I have never laid eyes on the games, they are not necessary to understand it. Witchers are specially trained mutants that people hire to slay monsters, that’s pretty much all the lore you need to know beforehand. .

They still release DVD’s?

Last French series I watched was a comedy on Netflix called “Call My Agent.” It was really funny with interesting characters and sub-stories about the artist ego. (It centers around a talent agency working with actors and actresses in French film industry.) And in almost every episode, there is a guest appearence by a French movie star.
