Capture all external dwellings, convert to your town, and start stockpiling creatures.  If you have all the dwellings, you should outgrow him quickly.

sorry for the double post. i was just wondering after playing for a little bit,

i notice that whenever you cap an area, the creeps, symbols turn to your/your enemies. do they affect anything?

secondly, i would like to know if its a good idea to have a HUGE main army and small groups of troops with other heroes? i understand that, that huge army isn't going to be able to be everywhere at the same time.

or should i spread it out evenly and even if someone dies, i throw another hero at him and keep doing that until the enemy is dead?

thirdly, is it a good idea to place units to hold a certain key structure like a crystal mine or lumber mill until the fort is capped? i know that if i choose to leave them there, the troops will not be able to move :\

and is it true that if my hero is killed, all the artifacts he/she were carrying are all gone? :\ lol. because that's what happened to me in the demo.

Well, the idea is to keep a strong force with the main hero, strongest that you can bear. In earlier games it was wise to keep a secondary hero with a skill like diplomacy that could actually do well on big maps on his own, but in this one, I'd actually stick one big hero and the other for resource snatching only (they may as well have no creatures at all)

Bad idea. You would have to split the artifacts too, and it kinda beats the purpose because the hero that defeats half your army will acquire those and beat the rest even easier (and gain a ton of exp as well)

In general, no

okay thank you for the replies

i'm back with a very very very very sad news. i think i'm not suited to play heroes as i'm failing badly... IN THE TURTORIAL!!!! !!! i'm unable to go past the tutorial. oh man.. this is the first game where i've unable to complete the tutorial !

i do not have much troops left given i've fought and creeped all the way to ulgath(?) so, i had to go back, and stockpile my troops again. by the time i have 3 stacks of 50 sentinels, he's got 102 maniacs and 32 hell hounds.. and his 6 succumbus, 5 dementeds and 2 breeders.

please someone tell me what i'm doing wrong !!! i'm know troop conversation is extemely important.. but i can't help it if i keep losing stuff to creeps or is there something i'm doing wrong?

i know camping is not a viable way of playing.. but i can't engage him especially if i only have a stack of 3 orcs, a stack of 13 orcs, 6 marksmen, a stack of 8 sentinels and a stack of 11 sentinels...

i think i'm about to fall into depression LOL >_>..

thanks for any replies...

EDIT: i just won the tutorial.. but i think i did it in a wrong way. i'm still open to advice. basically i stacked up all my sentinels into one huge stack of 164 and my orcs into one stack. then i just basically waited as long as possible as i wore out the AI using my heroes attacks. but eventually their units came out and attacked me. i ended up losing all my units except my sentinels.. so i'm still a little distressed :| and still open to suggestions of improvement!

There really isn't a lot you can do on the tutorial since all your skills are limited to warcries. I just got heroism for the occasional extra dmg and that was it, however stand your ground helped me a lot more - A def boost and an extra retaliation is very handy when you face multiple creatures.

In any case the only things I'd advice are keep your group tight so that sentinels can protect archers and sisters from harm and I mean adjacent for their special to reduce dmg from attacks. All units SHOULD be in full stacks so that when they attack they deal more damage and also have a stronger retaliation. Do not attack with frail units like archers or sisters first, wait and attack with sentinels first, possibly after using stand your ground on them. You could also keep 1-2 single sentinels to attack and waste the opponent's retaliation so that the main sentinel stack or your other units attack without being retaliated upon.

Anyway when the next mission starts pick heal, it will help minimize losses

Listen to Elvin, he is one of the best imo.

Split sentinels into a few 1 unit stacks, keeping one stack with the majority.  Use these stacks to soak up attacks and retaliations to buy time while your archers pick the enemy off from range.  It's very effective, and reduces losses to a minimum.  Plus Sentinels are the only units you can replace on the first map.

thank you both for your responses! i've just completed the tutorial... after a neck and neck battle with me and gerhart.. >_> it took 22 turns and i was left with 3 praetorians and he was left with 3 marksmen. thought i almost lost as the turn before he casted guardian angel and made his marksmen invincible... next turn my charges were enough to cast a guardian angel myself. and my normal attack killed 2 of his marksmen.. leaving the final one.. boom .

i feel so elated now.. and this is just the tutorial.. lol.. >_>

anyway, i've followed your advices. sadly, i lost my sisters early on in the first campaign.

anyway, i crept as fast as i could and when i fought gerhart, my slava was around level 7-8? although that did sacrifice my other hero's development badly. but i guess it was worth it.

gerhart had about 43 vestals, 20 vestals, 51 marks men, 20 marksmen, 61 praetorians and 20 praetorians..

i had roughly about 30 orcs brutes, 48-55 praetorians, 49 praetorians, 55 crossbowmen and 33 sisters.

thank god i won i guess. lol.

but i've learnt many things such as time is of the essence. i've essentially this time round to be able to creep without much difficulty. I could even kill the elite lich which was guarding that "secret" warp portal with losing almost no troops

thanks for the advice guys!

(now for the other campaign missions...)

i think it was

-stand your ground
-fireball
-lightning charge(that lightning bolt which strikes down. you get the skill from a helm >_>
-life drain (gotten from a scroll)
-heal
-greater heal(the upgraded form.)
-rush
-flawless charge/attack

... lol. i think i had one more from the initial skills you had access to in tutorial map 1.. >_>

In my case.. Tactics, heal, arcane exaltation, archery.. Not sure if I had inner fire but it can be nice in big battles.

I am not sure that fireball is a good choice, you could probably have exchanged it for something a bit more useful

i guess passive skills are then active ones :\

ah yes. one question. does the AI have unlimited mana? if it does, that's totally cheating >_>
