One last wish, please hear me out

Monday, the day I join the army draws close so this is my last chance to do something meaningful for the community. I also have one last request for you, anyone willing to spend a little time to help me out.

Amazon and metacritic have an infestation of trolls that give 0/5 or 1/5 for the game on the grounds that there are no Black Dragons, that square grids have replaced the hexes or that there is no tactics phase when combat starts. There are of course more valid complaints about real bugs and issues but even that does not begin to justify such grades, these people are simply pissed and taking a dump on the game just because they can. And along with them, all the people who worked hard on it. You may tell me, big deal, trolls have been even in previous titles. But now the ratings are there to stay.

I have a feeling that amazon and especially metacritic have a big role to play on ubi's future decisions and I fear what may come if we let them have their way. When I started the fans for heroes campaign I did it with the honest belief that this game deserves better and knowing it can be improved, from me, from you. What I ask of you if to take a short amount of time to write a sincere review about what this game really deserves. If you believe it deserves an 7 give it 7, if you believe it's an 8 give it 8 but please do not let its future be compromised by such blabbering idiots who do it for teh lulz. It is not fair and it CAN hurt the game.

Now some details: Metacritic forms its score out of the total reviews posted, negative, mixed or positive. You can find its current score here, which is also where you can submit a review. All it asks for is a mere 150 words minimum and it doesn't take longer than 15 secs to register. If you do write a short review or if you have already written one whether in a blog or this very forum you could also post it on Amazon. For instance here, here, here, or here.

Can you take 10 mins of your time and write a fair review? I would appreciate that. I will start writing one and hope to see more follow my example. Perhaps this way we will get the  2 expansions with 2 factions each, one can only hope

Unfortunately I don't own the game and probably won't for quite some time (measured in years rather than weeks) - at least, not until I get a new computer.  So no review from me.

But it is unfortunate that trolls have nothing better to do with their time.

7.3 is actually fairly reasonable given all the flaws of the game IF I don't count the fact that they were much more than, say, when the beta began. If I was a customer who has never played the beta or participated in the pre-release discussions, respectively someone who doesn't know much about all the fuss surrounding the town windows, Ubihole's promises and so on, why wouldn't I be disappointed? I'd give it 6.5/10 myself for the time being, which may go up or down once I finish the campaign (so far it's leaning towards "down" but I won't judge before I complete it with all 5 factions). Objectively. Just in comparison, the initial release of Heroes V wouldn't get more than 3/10 from me.

Well, in Amazon.de and .co.uk aren't really such recensions (talking about nirmal version)
I'll see what can be done in .com; do you have to buy something from amazon.com in order to write an recension? Cause that's hte way it's working in Germany.

78/100? Isn't that about the 8 of 10 I've been seeing from the rest of the critics?

I'm not disagreeing Elvin. I don't care for the critical opines anyway. By luck, I did read many posts at that-site (first and last time)the other day and what I saw was the usual mix of wonderful or crap. Seldom is there middle-of-the-road reviews except from those that are paid. So what I do is read what the pros have found and then just look-out for the other complaints. Sometimes they're valid often not.

Meanwhile here is my review on metacritic, rated 8.

As a long time fan of the series I have enjoyed every single one, each for what it had to offer. No doubt they had their differences and some I enjoyed more than others but they were all enjoyable in their time. Having followed the development of H6 from the very beginning I was excited yet cautiously optimistic. Having seen the game evolve over 4 beta patches and the continuous improvements, most of which being fan suggestions I can say I am fairly optimistic about the course of the game. And having played the final release I am absolutely loving it!

I will not refute the fact that the release was problematic and there were some serious issues such as the laptop black screen or flickering cursor along with plenty of ubi support mishaps. But I'm rating the game and not ubi am I now? Thanfully I never did encounter any serious issues and having said that I have only enjoyed the game. It has been a long time since I have enjoyed a game that much and seen that all the serious issues present in the beta were no longer present. In fact I only encountered 2 notable bugs with the rest being too minor for me to give them a second thought.

The game itself is smooth, fun and addictive. The missions are fairly long, with more content and dynamic objectives. The graphics are so beautiful and the music that accompanies them give this wonderful feeling of exploration that is utterly immersive. The new features are smoothly integrated into gameplay and eliminate micromanagement and pointless chores. The AI is decent and keeps you on your toes. The storyline is intriguing and has some nice twists, it's no Shakespear but hey it's good for a game and I like the new focus on more personal stories. Combat is deeper than ever and there are plenty of unit / ability combinations with possibilities of synergy. And better yet units no longer fall like flies, that can only allow for more strategic battles that are not decided in a matter of few turns as was the case in H5.

Of course there are some bad parts too. The game could use some more balancing for one, there are still a number of bugs most of which minor, the skill system could use some faction-unique abilities for class differentiation, the town screens were windowed and I am not sure that reducing the amount of rare resources was the best of ideas. Also simultaneous turns and random map generator are missing but which heroes game started with them anyway? On the plus side both will be coming soon and quite possibly in a patch or asa free gift for the community. The screens will also return as a patch and pretty soon too. All in all it's not so bad as some people make it out to be.

As a conclusion I would say that the game is well worth trying, after all most of its issues are to be fixed. The map editor and a decent core game should keep it going strong until then. Of course it is entirely possible that you hate some of its features, it is hard to objectively rate such a game with so divided a fanbase. But I believe it is a worthy successor of the series and one that has the potential to surpass the rest sometime down in the future. Or at the very worst be the proud champion of its generation, I can live with that

That's pretty much the case with me as well. I won't be able to get the game until Christmas, and by that point people might be wondering when the expansion will be announced.

Not having the game doesn't matter in this point. I think the point is to not give the ground to this jerks who rate the game 0 for not having Black Dragons. So whether you have the game or not doesn't matter that much. Just write something short and give it more than 5 stars. I think we like the Heroes series that much to support it against this internet imbeciles in any circumstance as we are in its community. You can renew your review when you have the game, but the current low reviews affects the sales deeply.

I would agree w/ an 8. It's an excellent 9-worthy game with lots of bugs that bring it down to an 8.

I think a 7 is being generous.
The 'streamlining' of the game has made exploration super-dull, and I just don't dig the visuals.

Speaking from my experience from the beta, I think I would rate the game a 6 and 'promising', because it definitely isn't there yet, but have the potential to get there.

On the positive side:
- Adventure map looks gorgeous.
- Game ran smoothly when it didn't crash (lol, I know that sounds weird, but what I mean is there is little lag on AI turns).
- Game brings back important features missing from H5 - ok, important feature, namely dual Hero classes.
- Blood/Tears specialization and advanced classes can become good.

On the negative side:
- Town Windows (duh!) and UI in general (confusing and none-intuitive button icons).
- Poor skill system, that imo. needs a complete work-over.
- Unnecessary simplifications or changes of certain game features like ressources and spells, and not for the better.
- Lots of things that still need to be done - not only bugs, but also general balancing of creatures, skills and spells.

@alcibiades and Avirosb

I think you two should play the game first, not only judge by the demo or press info. I was a very big sceptic but I am very pleased whith the final product, exept the Bugs and TW. The skill system is more of a maner of taste (stil not my taste but you get used to it) but many aspects of the game are realy above standard.

Eve the Economical part of the game is really well made inthe campaigne. I love how the neutral stacks constantly grow with your hero to make a chalange most of the time. The number of map objects is also very High. Unlike heroes V the game gives me a chalange even at normal difficulty With I didnt see from the time of Heroes II.

Thing I would improve in my eyes that are ot related to bugs, ad the most obvios are:
1: Option of random Hero In custom map. not only dynasti heroes.
2: None dynasti weapons in custom map (hope they are there, not tryed it yet)
3: Additional unites (I have the fealing of meating the same ones all the time)

I had been checking users reviews on jeuxvideo.com and it was quite the contrary actually, lots of people rating the game 20 because the other guys were bashing it too much (even though most of them still rated over 10)

that's funny, how can you have an accurate average score when every single reviewer wants the average score to be exactly representative of what he thinks?

I doubt they have changed the gameplay mechanics and added more resources since the demo.
I'd be willing to give it another try though, if you buy me a copy

Heck, why shouldn't I judge by the demo?
The whole point of having a demo is to help people decide if they want to buy the full game or not.

Tbh, this game is not worth anything above 6 (and I'm quite generous there). There are so many bugs that have NOT been fixed since beta day #1 and they managed to include many more since the end of the beta - one wonders how they managed that ... Did they even play-test their game in internal ?

Right now, the game is not fun as we spend more time running from a bug to another than playing ... didn't the beta-test end last month ?

Add to that a VERY retarded CS that is not able to fix one of their major snow-up (lack of Deluxe content for every UbiShop buyer) and refusing to even acknowledge it.

So yeah, if I had to rate the game, it would get a 6, Ubisoft would get a nice 0.

Bad interpretation of my words. ;-)
I just wanted to say that the game I have played sofar has a different feeling then the Demo had. And this feeling is much better. A lot of the features that I was sceptic about were (in the campaigne) treated whith care and well thought throu. For example the economical part I was very concernd about camou out worig well. But I did not have this feeling from the demo or any rewiev, this is an experienc you have to make.
And if you want a free copy.
We have a contest at Heroes-centum so you can take part in it:-D.

But as Elvin Said. Giving the game a bad ranking whitou trying it just based on the facts that you are predjudist to some changes is a bad idea. I do not want to say you do that but at they end, I like that the new heroes brings some fresh ideas rather than be a bad copy.
