Snow maiden? Snow zombie?

Why does snow maiden look like the zombie in Japanese horror films...

They are supposed to be good race right?

I think the Snow Maiden looks awesome. They are one of my favorite creatures. Ever tried their special ability + Frozen Ground?

The Yuki-Onna really inspired me and gave me lots of creativity. ^^

Ugh, the name seems... so out of place.

There are certain names that just doesn't sound good when spelled out in the English language.
Yuki-Onna's one, Svartálf is another.

It's still much better than a generic 'Snow-maiden'.

Yet they sound great in Japanese I like the Japanese names of Sanctuary creatures very much, Black Hole designed this faction very well.

Zombie? She's just a really pale girl (keyword "snow") with white pupils, that's all.

I think the un-upgraded form is the worst, that one looks downright scary in the in-game model.

yeah that dead ghost look is too scary for me & one reason I don't play sanctuary, but I suppose when one looks at the descriptions in fan manual, it looks like they are ice ghosts...I suppose "ghosts/spirits" don't have to be necessarily good or evil.

lol at frozen caress description in fan manual about a daimyo trying to "maintain his hardiness"

The un-upgraded Snow Maiden is the most cool looking unit in the game for me. And also very beautiful as a woman.

I totally loved the artwork, but the in-game model is ... well, it doesn't capture the feeling of the artwork at all, to put it nicely.

Yeah, they're obviously in love with partical effects.
Why couldn't they have added a few more layers to really bring home that 'icy mist' feel?

The appearance of Yuki Onna is just fine. This is what she's supposed to look like in Japanese folklore too. But you are right to be reminded of a ghost when you see her, cause in the actual Japanese folklore, the Yuki Onna were murderous spirits and sometimes they were given vampiric attributes like sucking the life force of their victims.

I just don't like the faction at all.

It's created out of nothing, no history of the race, and completely gone in 400 years (when HoMM 5 is about)

And the naming of creatures are the worst... You can't just call the base unit A and its upgrade as A's local name in origin -- It's like Genie upgrades to Djinn, Hydra upgrades to Hdra

Or Hell Hound upgrades to Cerberus.

Questionable nomenclature aside, though, I agree that the entire faction seems to come from an artificial place of "We need a faction in the water; what can we come up with?" rather than "We have these creatures; how do they fit together?"

One way forces you to contrive units for the sake of filling out a roster; the other way forces you to take the units you have and figure out why they're all working together.

I think that's why I dislike the current faction line-ups, and Sanctuary in particular.  Previous Heroes games seemed to follow the "take the units first, then figure out why they're there" line of thinking, which produced a much different brand of storytelling.  Current Heroes games follow the "take the concept of the terrain, and then figure out what units are native to that terrain", which produces a fairly homogenized line-up.

Now, take it or leave it, some people prefer things to be more cohesive.  But to me, something about it rings false.

It never really made sense when they just threw together random creatures, nor I don't see how that's a "not false" method. Not to mention there wasn't that many storytelling about faction lineups in the past, whereas I loved how they introduced us to the Sanctuary units in the campaign.

The concept was there for 5+ years, that they needed a faction worshiping the water dragon, so it doesn't make sense to still complain about it. It's their vision in the end, not how there's true or false developer vision...

On topic, the Snow Maiden is alright I guess, still feels kinda out of place but the campaign kept telling me snow is just like spring, river and ocean, part of the big thing so I guess I should leave it at that.

Most people have difficulties even pronouncing them and don't have a clue what those names mean so that's not important. Besides not all of the Japanese names are exact counterparts to the level 1 creature names, for instance "Mizu Kami" means "Water Spirit" not "Spring Spirit".

May I ask something? How the hell you pronounce Hdra?
And by the way, Genie is closer to the origin then Djinn... as someone who learns Arabic at school (not out of free will... but you must learn 3rd language for 4 years where i live) its pronounced j-i-n-y, which is demon in Arabic.

anyway,
I liked the art of the Snow Maiden, even through I haven't got them in the campaign yet.
And don't forget it's a elemental spirit, it suppose to look supernatural.

In Greek is Ydra. What's this got to do with the Yuki Onna though, I'm not quite sure.
