Usually, to have fun and get paid at the same time it's a rare s.h.it, mostly you have to give some in order to receive, it's a natural thing.
Related strictly to the games, you can come up with the following example : "Look, game tester, employed at EA or UBI, it's fun and you make money out of it". It might sounds true or tempting for an outsider, but in practice and in a long run, you'll see that the fun turns into a regular job.
Prizes are good, no doubt, but they'll come when the initiator will get something in return, in some way, no point to enlist here lots of arguments. From what I learnt so far, Vesuvius already invested alot in this site, mainly to feed his addiction to homm serie,to create a community and make a name out of ToH for no hidden purpose.
He succeded. He fed his addiction, we found friends and had a great time over the past years, and this its all that mattars. '
I called it a complete successof this investment.
Trust me, I will never remember any prize that I won, as vivid as I recall some epic games which I lost due to a single square wrong move or a f.u.cking luck which popped last round. These are true memories, in regard of this game.
If you don't believe, ask some old guys, which shared that intensity of the games, to name a few: Camoes, Insatiable, Gagatek, many others, and you won't believe it! - even Jinxer  , even some russians ...
But that happened several years ago, maybe things changed, and I'm outdated and might be wrong.
F.u.ck the prizes, try to hope they'll patch H6 to a great game, and you'll certainly get satisfaction eventually.

Money prizes are evil ? Not is not. Almost every TV concurs/show, every serious sport event have solid money prizes, money prizes help talented players to became professionals, to dedicate their lives to occupation they like the most. Give resources and time to achieve world records in sport, in music to create songs that will stay for centuries ... Take a look at football - worst pro team beat every game amatory team ... No more money prizes on TOH is huge step backward for TOH.

All things from your examples are heavily sponsored and trigger huge gains through a bunch of publicity. Vesuvius could do same and make you happy, but are you ready to close 15 pop ups each time you navigate ToH pages?

In addition to what Salamandre said, other game genres (FPS, MMOs, RTS), will be far more popular than turn-based strategy ever will, beacuse of the time restraints and less luck factor.

On TOH was money prizes, but no publicity. What make you think now publicity is a must ? Our live is full of publicity, on streets, on TV etc ... Not all publicity is so bad, depends how is done. I think we can live with it on TOH too if is not too aggressive.

I glad Vesuvius fed up well his needs. Also as meeting point for Heroes multiplayer funs TOH is great place. Maybe in the past was great for ranking. But last two years or more TOH fail every tournament he try to organize, people leave TOH. Right now TOH is almost dead, few player playing H6 now. And this is not merit of TOH, but just because new Heroes appear. Even regional Russian league beat TOH big time now. They have tournaments, activity, 75 people participate in last tournament. Why ? Will tell you why ... Later ... Have to go ...

When H5 was fresh, there were a lot of activity in TOH.
Still, sooner or later people get tired of grinding the same game for years, and H5 came out 4 (or was it 5?) years ago. I know that after playing ~100 games I felt I pretty much exhausted what this game could offer.
Heroes 6 will probably be popular after they sort out these fundamental multiplayer issues.

Important factor of cos but it's work the same way for all, for TOH, for Heroes League Ru. Still Heroes League Ru have good activity, TOH not why ?
Heroes League have coordination consilium composed from veterans, they decide on HL. TOH is monarchy. Work well for some time too because Vesuvius was active player that know well the situation. But for some time he is very far away from Heroes game, no offense, but i think Ves have not enough understanding what is going on TOH. Still all decision are taken as in old time - "I said we will go this way, and we will go this way ..." Ahh, i almost forget about Vesuvius evil cardinal Jinxer ... His brilliant decisions make leave StriderHL after first season H5 Caesar. Just words ? Not is not. Remember topic were almost all TOH players agreed ranking need changes, need modernization ? Vesuvius ignored completely players opinion. Now more recent event. Caesar H5 season 2, all active emperor, trusted veterans announce boycott to Natalka. Do Ves hear as ? Nop, decision is - i said Natalka will stay and play ... Do he at least investigate the case, do he ask for proves of Natalka cheating ? Looks like cheating is no more big crime on TOH. First off all player must obey Vesuvius, this is condition to be successful on TOH. Boycott can't be last unpunished and our Highness Vesuvius decide to teach us a lesson, no more money prizes because luck of respect toward him. Main mistake of Ves is he think he is only one deserve here respect. Elite players ? No, they are just abusers, cheaters. Soon i will get new blood, old one is bad. No respect for them, they only generate head aches, dramas... In any sport organizers of competition are respected, but players, performers have ten time more respect because they deserve it. Just words ? I remember then Elit addressed Ves in hope he will solve his dispute with Strider. Ves response - "Elit do you know how fast accelerate Buggati to 100 km per hour ? ". Ves learn to respect TOH players and you will get respect you ask.

That's simply because V is made from other kind of iron. I can't imagine Mocara, Prometheus, Frank or Sir Alkin going involved in such petty argues about cheat/no cheat, ask the ToH owner to solve -probably those names are unknown to you, but in that time there was not a single dispute and site running perfect-.
If you guys have a problem playing one person, ignore him/her and move away. One standing man can't listen to every whining from the kindergarten.
ToH offers automation, fast browsing, tourneys, prizes. All individual disputes can be solved outside the command center, between mature people. As one who played in all past Heroes leagues and assisted helplessly to their inevitable end , I am amazed how far ToH made it, and still alive. Simply outstanding, hat of.

Because theres was no caesar last season, I see no reason for a prize. I see no reason for cash-prize anyway...but whatever, its Ves decision, not mine or urs: his money, his prize, right?
Also, I really dont understand y people are so eager to get those 500$...Im starting to think they are earning such ammount of money in a whole year or so...OMG!
EDIT: hahahahahahhaha, I really enjoyed ur piece of imagination about monarchy, cardinals, pawns, duchy...

There are VERY few people playing multiplayer in toh right now. Its magnified by multuple servers, no sim turns and the fact that people still playing campaigns.

It's not about money, just think a bit. Strider was on Caesar not for money. We have prove. Initial problem solution for final of Caesar H5 season1 was split medal between StriderHL and Firedragon. Do he accepted half prize in money and half Caesar ? No, he preferred to leave in silence ...

Mostly I believe seasson 2 didnt deserve a caesar is the buggy protection of the game in multiplayer game. This among the others.

Anyway, I hope over time this h6 will be THE GAME to bring back some of the golden age (aka homm3) gaming. Only time will tell, those campaigns are so long that I'm only on the 3rd one still. A lot of fun dynamics to the multi on this one, but I've noticed that over the decade, people are more used to complaining on the message boards than actually contributing anything positive. Look at the hate on the homm6 UBI boards for example.
I haven't even requested a news item on TOH with celestial heavens yet, because I'm waiting for a few bug fixes (chipmunk sounds, imperial griffin ability, etc..) and the fact that most are playing the single player for the next month. Say, starting in december onwards I see activity going up in multi, and I will be making a permanent room online for TOH as well.
And again infinitus, if I have to repeat myself: There will be prizes if there is enough activity, but I'm not going to give a $500 prize for 8 active players. I might as well donate it to the local charity than give it to someone who spends his life not contributing a single thing to society, but only complains on a message board.

Because of such people game will have better town screens, most probable simultaneous turns will be implemented because people are active. Many bags are reported ... Even UBI say in every response letter - thanks for your feedback etc ... And you say we not contributing to anything positive ? Thanks for appreciation ...

The key to that is that there are fans that PURCHASE seats to watch these events. 400,000 seats X $50 per ticket = $20,000,000 brought in per game, PLUS all the hot dog sales and the beer sales and the peanut sales and the jersey sales and the giant finger sales and the parking sales... So yes the big sporting events pay there players but only after Millions of dollars are generated first.
TOH generates a grand total of ZERO Dollars of revenue...
So how about this.. we charge Infinitus $10.00 per week to play in TOH.. and at the end of season 1 (50 weeks) TOH will have taken in $500. Then we can pay a cash prize to the Ceasar of $500
This solves everything.

Awww.... Infinitus didnt get his way, so now he takes his ball and goes home. What a shame, there will be Legendary battles and games and tournaments to come with H6, and I am sure you could be one of the greats. How ironic will it be that after you quit, the activity Spikes to epic proportions and ves adds double the Prize Awards
Maybe you should try some patients. Trust me... I am always quick to want to quit, then after I think about it, I have clearer view.. So Even I am trying to be more patient before I make rash decisions.
