Darkness (OoC)
After returning from escorting an Envoy to another kingdom, the characters find their kingdom in ruins. Nobody survived whatever happened. The characters are somewhat already experienced, and this also means they know each other. Some did remain behind to experience the sights of the other town as well (for new characters that join later).
Since this is a human kingdom..only a few races to choose from. Elven, Human, and Dwarf. The classes for now are going to be limited to Mage, Cleric, Warrior, and Thief.
Can't give too much away about this, as one of the focus will be trying to figure out what happened. Here is some info about the world, however.
The Kingdom the characters are from is the Kingdom of Marik. The worlds name is Faron. There are four kingdoms..or were..and two continents. The Kingdom of Marik was the biggest. Taking up over half of one of the continents. For it to be taken out, without anybody else finding out how or why would take a LOT.

Mmm, been wanting to do a fantasy character for a while. How does magic work? (By which I mean, is there a spell list to choose from, are we limited to certain types of magic, that sort of thing.)

Think I am going to go for a female Elven Mage this time. I will think about the character some more.
I'm going to be a Evocation Sorceror. I'll write her bio tomorrow.

Ok, if you specialize with magic you get more spells from whatever school you specialize in a day..but you then do not get spells from its opposing school at all. You can generalize, having fewer spells, but not limiting what schools you can access. I will get a list of spells, going to start with a basic list and go from there.

Alteration Illusion Enchantment
Divination ✵ Conjuration
Invocation Necromancy Abjuration
The list of schools. Alteration is opposite of abjuration, illusion is opposite of necromancy, etc.

I'll see what this is like... could I be a mage-thief? A thief who sacrifices some of his acrobatic abilities to gain minor arcane abilities?

I'll allow double classing, but remember that it slows down growth because the 'experience' is split between the two classes. Somebody who casts magic also has to obey the rules of magic..ie metal on armor will interfear with magic casting.

13th warrior instantly comes to mind.
Have no worries, by being a thief also, I'm craving the ability to pick locks and evade unnecessary confrontation, not to mention the extra agility might come in handy.
I was thinking of chain-armour rather then plate, due to the weight, I'm expecting our guys to travel great distances and I shudder to think about dragging my @ss up and down hills and what-not in full plate armour , even if it was weightless the sheer heat inside of it would be enough to collapse my strength .  .
I'll stick with chain mail with gauntlets and perhaps shoulder guards (over the chain)

So in a group I was traveling with we came to this pit with very sharp stakes at the bottom of it. The thief goes around by climbing the walls and makes it over. The Paladin in full plate with a towershield and a great axe climbs up the wall, across the ceiling and to the other side.
...
Anyway, I'l be a mage thief.

As for gear/equipment/etc I am going to just state you have all the basic gear (backpack, food, rope, etc) and up to basic chain mail for armor. One weapon (of choice), and about 200 in gold. Remember these are seasoned people so they have a bit of spending money.

You are ... were... in the employ of the destroyed kingdom. Working for the Military, in various fashions. Which is why you were escorting the envoy.
In the end of the day you answered to the King, but were not mercenaries (who wouldn't really care if the kingdom was destroyed).

All right, I think I'm going for a dwarven warrior that... Well, we'll see how he plays out, but I like him already. I'll try to make him not as generic as those two words sound together.

The characters were a military escort for the Envoy, working on the Kings orders.
Edit : DOH, might help if I remember he was a captain, not a sergeant...fixed.

A destroyed town, no sign of any army or anything living for that matter. It is on the outskirts of the kingdom (coming back from the other kingdom) Lots of dead bodies though.
