Darkness (IC)

A few miles into the kingdom, the group comes upon a small town, where they were going to resupply.

The devastation was total, complete.  Barely a stone left standing.  Bodies everywhere, not a soul stirring in the bleak landscape in front of the group.  Having just returned from escorting an envoy to a neighboring kingdom, nobody was expecting to find this.

The captain, a Bartholomew (Bart) McCade just stares for a moment, as if he is hoping he is just seeing a mirage.  "Company...dismount!  Spread out, see if there is any survivors!"

"Captain.." starts a young private nobody has bothered to learn the name of yet.  "Captain there is no way anybody survived.."

"Stow that private..I said spread out..find any survivors.  We have to figure out what the heck happened here!"

Tanis slowly emerged from the caravan.  The acrid burnt smell assaulting her nostrils.  The smell of death was everywhere.

On the horizon, Tanis could just make out the smoking spires that once were the proud minarets that dwarfed the beautiful formal gardens within the ducal compound.

She walked out past the caravan's shadow.  No sunshine could shine through the thick layer of smoke and smog that appeared to cover the entire planet.  "Where the hell do we begin?", she thought.

Kerym steps forward, gazing across the scene. In his travels, he had never seen the likes of this. Close to, in some cases, but not this. He followed the order given out, and set forth, looking around for anything that may be alive, or that might just be important. He also took out his sling, as well as a couple bullets. Just in case he found something or someone that may be the cause of this setup, or is just an unfriendly individual. He did his best to remain in a relatively close proximity to at least one other person.

Most of the valuables had been smashed... and it really wouldn't have mattered anyway. There was no one to give them to. At least, not in the servants quarters or the kitchens, where he had expected any survivors to most likely be. Raistlin finished retching outside of the kitchen. No, no one was still alive in there. Who or what had done this?

Fearing what he would find but knowing that people would most likely have hidden in secret passages in the keep, Raistlin set off for the ruins where the town hall was... and went immediately to the place the tunnel to the prison was. Maybe some of the prisoners were still alive?

The air was deathly still as Ivor dismounted with a clinking thud, his hopes to find survivors dwindled as he moved to and fro from one corpse to the next. Though the horror of this atrocity gripped him like no other, but he still had the gall to search the bodies for something useful/valuable.

Immediately one thing becomes apparent, with all the bodies and carnage of the place..not a single corpse is not of the village.  Whoever, or whatever, attacked this place either suffered no casualties, or dragged away their dead.

Not a single item is salvageable, not that has any real worth. The attackers were very through.  As the group sifts through the rubble, they do come upon something unusual however.  Three stone circles, about 5' in diameter each, touching each other, in what would have been in the middle of the town.

((Keep in mind that this is an outskirt town, there is a castle..but it belongs to a duke or the equivalent.   You have not reached the capitol yet))

It is quickly apparent that not as much as a chicken survived this.

Shuddering, Raistlin returns to the captain, "Nothing sir... not even the criminals were spared." It had been even worse for them, the prisoners had barely even been able to defend themselves. The carnage was still sickening to the stomach. "If you'll excuse me sir... I need to be alone for a while..."

Tanis had prodded a few of the bodies.  Having a rather macabre outlook she tended to gravitate towards the more mutilated corpses.  She came to the body of a Ducal guard.  She recognized the uniform.  His body had been tied to a pole and whoever killed him, had taken their time.

Tanis was neither disgusted nor disturbed.  What upset her was the smell.

She made her way back to the others.  "All dead", she reported without a trace of compassion.

Morlin walked through the ashes of the outskirt town. His axe dragging through the ashes. If every place in the country was like this...
No, he couldn't think like that. The Dwarven merchant empire couldn't have fallen. His clan still had to live. It just had to. He felt anger falling over him, but it felt out of place, since this anger didn't drive his axe into his enemies, except a wedge into his own spirit.

He would get to the bottom of this. As he spotted Ivor trying to loot corpses, he made a mental vow to punch out his teeth next time and made that very clear by shouting at him harshly. In a way it was a good release for his anger. Now, he was standing at the stones, though, and he had no clue about their purpose whatsoever?

"Perhaps... this is some trickery that wizards have used to kill everyone in the town." Morlin said. If this was some monstrous magic, that'd at least put his foe into a context he'd understand. A context that was susceptible to axes and fists.
He shouted for attention from the elf woman in their convoy. maybe she'd spot something.

After hearing Morlin's insults and threats his greed turns to shame but if anything valuable or useful or perhaps even a clue is still left on the bodies they are far better in the hands of the living and in the hands of those who aim to bring rest to their vengeful souls. After finding absolutely nothing on the bodies of a dozen dead, disgust and sorrow overwhelms Ivor and he returns to report.

"The men and the women all, dead.....not even the children were sparred captain, nor did I find anything worthy of salvaging. I say we burn the corpses and report this atrocity as soon as possible, there's nothing we can do. Everyone is dead and the town in ashes and no sign of the perpetrators. Unless someone can make out what those stones are, we have no leads"

Ivor looks at the quiet elven lass with a questioning gaze, almost expecting her to know something, for everyone else seemed as confused and grief stricken as he is.

This... this was beyond sickening. And that Drow... Well what did he expect? Drow had no pity or remorse. Hell, if given the right incentive she would probably have done this herself. Oh no, not by herself and not without provocation, but she would have done this without batting an eyelash. It wouldn't even surprise him if the Drow race were somehow behind this. Sickening.

Raistlin berated himself for thinking like that. The girl had done nothing to betray his trust, what right did he have to accuse her, even if only to himself? Let her be. They did not know what had happened here.

But still... to look at these people as if their lives had meant nothing... as if this spark of life that had been extinguished did not matter... "Tanis, I know that we do not see eye to eye on most things, but do you honestly feel nothing for these people?"

Tanis had suddenly become the silent focus for a few of the group.  She knew they were looking at her for answers regarding the stones.  However, apart from old childhood stories about stone circles being found in the desert, Tanis had no more idea than anyone else.

"They are of some significance that much is obvious, but I don't know any more about them than you", she lied.  "They may very well be of some magical significance, but that sort of practice would indicate something primitive ... and I very much doubt anything that primitive wiped out an entire town.  So for now I suggest we push on and see what else we discover".

Turning to Raistlin, her reply was swift and callous, "No I don't".

She then turned and walked briskly towards the caravan.

"By the gods..." Lo'or murmured, kneeling, his fingers sifting through the ash.

"What could have done this?" His face was a sickly, pale color, his hands were shaking.

"Captain, you've heard the others, there's nothing here. Let's not stay in this foul place longer than we have to."

He looked at the ground again, his face shocked. Then he looked up into the sky, muttered a prayer, and murmured, "May all the poor souls who have died here be avenged, and rest in peace." He stood up and quickly walked towards the caravan.

The captain nods, but before he leaves..he gets a detail to bury all the dead.  "I will not leave the bodies to the elements.  The dead deserve more respect then that."

After every last body is in the ground, the group is gathered and leaves toward the capitol.

On the way many more towns and villages are seen, and every one in the same condition.  Including the Stones.  Eerily, not a single person or creature that could be thought to be one of the attackers is seen.  No bodies, no lost or broken equipment from them.  Almost as if the towns or village had no time or ability to defend themselves.

When the group finally arrives to the capitol..the only difference there is that the circles of stone are larger.  Much larger.

With every destroyed village and town they passed, everyone noticed the stones.  Tanis decided it would best to air her concern with the Captain, in private.

"Captain, may I have a word please", she stated.  It wasn't a question.  She moved away from the group and waited for McCade to join her.l

Aleron circled another line of corpses waiting for burial, making tallies of the dead and observations as to cause of death. It was distressing, of course, but any caster worth their salt learned to concentrate on the matter at hand. What was more distressing was that this was only the last of several such tallies he’d had to make, and diagrams of the strange stone circles had grown repetitious enough that now he only documented the differences—size, position, orientation, and anything else he felt might be of mystical significance.

As McCade approached Tanis, she began.  "The stones are summoning stones.  Whoever is responsible for the carnage is teleporting through those stones", she stated, noticing the look of shock on McCade's face.  Without giving him a chance to answer, she continued.  "The stone circles have gotten bigger in respect to the size of town or city, you've probably noticed.  If I am right this city will have several more of these stone circles placed in strategic positions to ensure surprize.  Whoever attacked, calculated it perfectly and overwhelmed them, probably at night".

She waited for McCade to respond, but he didn't so she finished.  "Vast armies would have swarmed out through those stones in a matter of minutes.  The city didn't stand a chance.  That's all I have report so far".  She then walked passed him towards the others.  As far as Tanis was concerned, the conversation was now over.
