They are both right.

There is the undead effect that provide +20% resist Cold spells.
And another passive that provide +10% vulnerability to light.

My bad, haven't seen that "undead" description, but seriously, resistant to water? WTH? Where do they come up with such decisions?

I loled hard on some of the replies, and you seemed to believed what people said to be true. I am telling you this, what most of the people said are related to PVE, and useless for you. UD is not overpowered in PVP games and hardly ever an counter of Sanctuary. (though its harder for Sanctuary due to 20% water res)

All will be personal options, and others will lol at what I will say too. =) but you should hear me out.

I don't know what game setting you normally choose. I normally go with middle option for game difficulty and level speed(its 'fast' i think), no dynasty, 2minutes per turn.

With this setting, and current patch, 1.1.1. Sanctuary blood mage is the most powerful. The reason is simple. Kappa has initial of 50 and can upgrade to 55. You have the advantage to hit and run in early game and heroes are so cheap to revive. blood mage gain water grave ability
at blood tier 1, it has a very high dmg output, can't use on undead but good for MF.

Here is a walk through, D1 build tavern get h2 and pass units to h1.  H1 choose +25% xp at level 1, at level 5, you should have enlightenment, logistic, tactic, heal(or regen) and pressed attack.
I am normally level 5 at W1D4.

Level 6 - lightning bolt, high dmg spell. + water grave, you ll be god like against npcs and other races except UD. clear map fast, with 10 shark, 17 priestess you should be able to clear guards if battlefield, (like 8 kensei, 6 Yuki-onna and 6 mizu-kami in one group) if you can't, then practice more. W2D3 ~ W2D4, H1 should be level 10.

At this time, you can get level 5 H3, and H3 should have few kappa.
Against non UD, you can use h2 H&R at level 3, lightning bolt is enough. 1 shot kill 10+ core range creatures. Against UD, use lvl5 H3, with Sunbusrt(H3 learn Sunbust + light magic 1 & 2 + magic infinity1 to max dmg output). After few H&R, H1 should be around level 12 ~ 13, and good enough to defeat your opponent. Spend the rest of your skill point on Magic Infinity1, Air Magic1&2, Ice Bolt, Ambush. OR whatever helps your combat the most.

Game is normally finished around late W3 and early W4, and my army contains 40sharks, 70 priestess and 30kappa during the final battle. + or -. The UD opponent should have....... nothing, killed by my H3 hit and run.

Do you get my point? This is PVP, all the other replies are more PVE BS. Also, if you PVP alot, some basics are very very import. Something like the difference between Passive, Neutral, Aggressive and Hatred is very important in PVP game.

All the best. Wish you have fun and beat your UD friend =)

WHat would you consider to be PvP or PvE? IMO there's only one PvE element in Heroes and that's creeping. Even when playing vs AI heroes (which the OP isn't), the gameplay is still PvP.

Well thank you very much Stevenyy, that was really helpful! I think that a Sanctuary blood mage is somehow related to the awesome Dungeon faction (i played it most ), basically with the hit and run tactic and the fast creeping based on spells. Speed is the key there!
I will play against my friend this weekend so we'll se who's the best now hehehe

True that Heroes is mostly PVE, but when you play against another person, there will be PVP elements and you need to change your play style around it.

I consider PVP to be countering every single of your spell, targeting weekness of your creatures, and surprising you every possible way it can be. PVE is just against script, and have many ways to exploit. All your PVE skills will be reflected in the final battle against your human opponent, e.g. PVP.

I suppose water is associated with living creatures, like our planet Earth made up of 75% water....things which all living creatures need....so they made undead slightly resistent to water damage....

Anyway, it's still not that bad, being 20% resistant to water damage doesn't matter even if you're Sanctuary Magic...instead of going with water & air magic, go for water & fire magic....when most water spells deal the chilled and frozen affects, this makes the stack vulnerable to fire damage by 20% more.....

Or maybe just, you know, Water magic is often (in many games) limited to Ice/Cold/Frost spells. Undead should be good against that stuff, it's cold in the grave blah blah. Fire is another matter.

Dominions 3 actually has a Cleansing Water spell which works against demons and undead only. Cleansing water and purifying fire appear in folklore all over the world.

DoubleDeck:
You've been just caught making stuff up as opposed to talking from experience . (No fire magic in Sanctuary)

you can make a nice combo with sanctuary if you choose air+water magic! soaked units are 20% more vulnerable to air magic (chain lightning! ) and a sanctuary blood magic hero has a special that soakes all enemy units and punishes them with a lightning storm, so against undead you should choose air magic as your main damage ability (plus any light magic spell you consider useful)

About countering with Haven.

With all that charges (sun rider's "built in" and one from hero's skill) bugged, and by no means, working, or working with an opposite effect...

Griffon's battle dive missing everything on path...

Haven is not a good way.

Wait for patch and then smash your buddy with holy, might/tears/retaliation-retribution based army. Wait only for him to "spell first".

With all those big(2x2)things Haven has, they have to hit them (they retaliate first, then take dmg) or miss a turn going around.

Dominate has major drawback. You have to only hit dominated monster (hero's attack, piercing bolts or better, aglaya's teleports, are good counters).

Undead don't breathe, so they are resistant to water in a sense. Undead also feel no pain, so they are resistant to cold.
