I always hated their lineup - small dwarf, small dwarf with spear, small dwarf on bear, angry small dwarf, small dwarf with beard, big dwarf, walking dragon 
Seriously, dragons are the most unique creature in fortres lineup, becouse they are the only dragonsin the game that walk. That alone says enough about the faction.
But i'll vote for the secont most unique - dwarf on bear.

priests and their area of effect attacks. moreover they have the best destructive spells of all the creatures in the game.

Thunder Thanes! Their only problem was them doing twice the damage it said they would, leading me to think I couldn't kill the stack.

I like how the Lava Dragon looks but now how it plays so I'll go with what could have been a much cooler Giant creature, the Thane...

Right creature wrong upgrade. Thunder Thane for me. Every attack is a chain lightning wtf. It is great to have Rune Of Battle Rage Cast on them and let them attack a line of units. Total massacre! 
I've started to forget things about this game as it's been a long time since I last played it. Rune Of Berserking remains until triggered right? So you can have both Berserking and Battle Rage on the same unit?

The Thunder Thanes are easily the strongest dwarf unit. Love them. Hate fighting them. They are fast initiative, high speed, devestating chain attacks, and good defense/hit points. The low attack score is made up by the chain strike. Definitely the best Fortress unit. Even if a Giant Dwarf is an oxymoron.

Thunder Thanes and Flamelord usually are the first units the enemy player goes for, behind Bear riders and sometimes rune patriarch or keeper. But i would have to say my least favorite are the harpooners and my favorite all all the other units, especially magma Dragon and Thunder Thane

That's because it's really a giant, not really a dwarf...funny thing is in King's Bounty, they have this same theme where dwarves are allied with giants, while they are mortal enemies in D&D (hence dwarves have combat bonus vs giants).
Funny thing language...giant === dwarf (yep no sense)
Regenerating flying flamelord with flamebolt and fire vulnerability as well is the fest for fighting neutrals.

Without a doubt, the most impressive opening attack in any battle would be the thunder thanes with rune of battle rage!
