I think that the "Ancient times" doohicky is actually meant to imply that it came before the wizards and is just some fell spawn that survives to this day... Not sure though. War, got anything to confirm?

As they prey in Shantari ruins I think they originated from that times.

Ok, as promised in the quiz thread, here is an explaination to the workings and favourings of magic.

First let me start by stating, perhaps superfluously, that there are 7 schools of magic: Earth, Air, Water, Fire, Light, Dark and Prime. The first 6 are elemental and have their origin in the power of the elemental gods. Primal Magic has it's origins in both Asha and Urgash, yet is not their direct power, as opposed to the elemental gods/magic, but rather the residual power of their birth and/or the power of the spirit plain. Magic drawn from the Void is also classed as Primal Magic.

The schools of magic are generally favoured by these kinds of people:
Air magic is favoured by the priests of Ylath and the Human magi of the Free Cities. It is also popular amongst Orcs.(Via the invocations of Father Sky)
Earth Magic is favoured by the priests of Sylanna and the Elves. It is also very popular amongst Orcs (Via Mother Earth)
Dark magic is favoured by the priests of Malassa, Dark Elves and Faceless. It is also popular amongst Necromancers.
Light Magic is favoured by the Priests of Elrath, Angels and the Humans of the Holy Empire.
Fire magic is favoured by the priests of Arkath and Dwarves. It is also popular with Demons and their Cultists.
Water magic is favoured by the priests of Shalassa and Naga.
Primal Magic is favoured by the Priests of Asha, Necromancers, the Blind Brothers, the White Weavers, the Silent Sisters, the Dragon Knights, Nethermancers, Demons and their cultists.

As you may have noticed, the Wizards of the Silver Cities are not on this list. This has to do with the ways of using magic, which are 4, and I am going to explain next.
The First way of using magic is called the Path of the Elemental Dragons. This basically equates worship. Through the correct forms of worship, such people are able to channel the power of their patron Gods and prefrom magic thusly.
The Second way is the Path of Chaos. Either through the direct worship of Urgash(which is rare) or through tapping the Chaotic corruptions within them, these people are able to preform Chaos or Wild magic, which is either destructive or corrupting in effect.
The Third way, is the Path of Sar-Elam. Here, magic is a form of higher knowledge and it can be studied. This Path can be subdivided into 3 forms, which are the Ways of the Wizards, the Ways of the worshippers of Asha and the Ways of the Dragon Knights.
Wizards draw magic either from artifacts or from spirits that they have bound to them. For Wizards, knowledge leads to ways of binding spirits to their will, the drawing from or the creation of artifacts.
The Worshippers of Asha, for them the worship of Asha(who, as opposed to her children, does not answer prayers and worship) and the study of the world and sacred text is the same thing. Through worship and study, they find ways to acces Primal Magic.
The Dragon Knights are the ones who approximate the teachings of Sar-Elam the best. They tap into the residual magic of their own creation and are able to channel such outwards. They learn how to do this by close study of the teachings of Sar-Elam.
The Fourth way is the Path of Orc Shamans. As many of you know, Orcs are not natural beings, but artificial ones. And they are the amalgamations of Humans and Demons and as such beings of the directly opposed Chaos and Elemental Order. Because such creations are anomalies, the chaotic taint opposes their elemental(read Human) nature. This is most evident in their blood and the spilling of it, is in fact a very indirect and limited form of Chaos magic. However, Orc Shamans use the spilling of Orc and Goblin blood to disrupt the Natural Order of Creation and are able to "tear the Veil". What this means is they are able to connect the Material and Spiritual plains and "leak" magic from the Spirit plain into the Material one, which allows Shamans, who have ridden themselves of their Chaos taint, to direct the leaking Magic. (The most direct way of which is invoking Father Sky and Mother Earth(Both beings of the Spirit World)) The greater the magic used this way, the more blood needs to be spilled, which is why Goblins are often sacrificed, read simply bled dry, in such rituals.

No, they are in Danse Macabre. Aether = Void.
Aethermancers just sounds better than Voidmancers.

Are, those. They are called Nethermancers, by the way))

Two questions.
What was full answer for orcs' blood?
And Isegrim clearly was capitol of the Wolf Duchy when Gerhard was alive (H6 states that clearly, in signpost). Maybe Nilshaven became it after the eclipse?

You are correct. They are called Nethermancers. I must be confused with something else.
Nilshaven is the capitol of the Wolf Duchy, even if the compendium retcons it as such, before the Eclipse. Isegrim is refered to Gerhardt's palace/fortress ingame. So, given the conflict in this, I'd say that one should give the compendium right of way, so to speak.
The correct answer (could)would have been, Shamans use bloodletting rituals to use Chaos magic/Blood Magic and to enter the dreamworld.

I nearly forgot about this short story:

Long, long ago,
when Angels ruled the skies,
They angered with the Faceless,
and plotted their demise.
'Faceless know no truth,' they said
'and Angels tell no lies.'
But both sides bled and moaned when cut,
And tears filled blinded eyes.

And so it was with Angel Nava,
And so the old bard sings,
In the war against the Faceless,
Fair Nava lost her wings.

She fell down upon an island,
With the corpses of her friends,
And there she would have died alone,
Had she not to make amends.
Nava buried the Angel fallen
In a tomb of purest stone
And cried fresh tears for their souls
And cried to die alone.

But the dragons were not done with her
And one found her on bent knee,
Roaring 'You shall fly again'
'You need only take to sea.'
So Nava left the DRAGON
to look o'er the Angels' tomb
And took a ship WESTWARD bound
She sailed off to her doom.

To the West she found a temple
On the island of a Queen
Who screamed at sight of wingless Nava
All battle scarred and mean
She begged Nava to travel NORTH
To islands in need of might
There they needed heroes
And here there was no fight.

And so it was with Angel Nava
And so the old bard sings
In the war against the Faceless
Fair Nava lost her wings.

And to the North Nava found
Great monsters spewing bile
And people swimming frightened
From bay to tiny isle
And Nava became a hero
The foul beasts were downed
But still she'd found no wings
And so EASTWARD she was bound.

Nava came to TWO ISLANDS
Each SHAPED LIKE A WING
Homes to warring kingdoms
Each kingdom had lost its king
Each island offered Nava
A throne to call her own
She'd only to conquer the others
And make their mothers moan.

Nava knew the dragon
Had spoken all too true
She'd only to kill a little more
And her wings like islands grew
But Nava left the kingdoms
To heal in their own hate
And set her sails to WESTWARD winds
To encounter her own true fate.

And so it was with Angel Nava
And so the old bard sings
In the war against the Faceless
Fair Nava lost her wings.

Nava's great journey over
She laid down to rest
Beside a giant PALM TREE
Under a griffin's nest
And Asha came to take her
And reshape her in just fashion
The Goddess gave Nava new wings
And new life as a dragon.

And so it was with Angel Nava
And so the old bard sings
In the Dragon’s restless islands,
Fair Nava found her wings.

Not too much with general lore but it's nice and have few references here and there.
