Insufficient Disk Space

I am playing Heroes III Complete and I keep getting this error message:

'Heroes III requires at least 5 MB of free space on the current drive. Please make at least 5 MB of free space available before running the game'

I currently have 465 GB of free space available

The strange thing is I have been playing Heroes III all year and this is the first time I have seen the message.

Any ideas how to fix the problem?

Looks like You have too many game maps in Maps subfolder inside the game folder.

Try this:
1. Delete unneeded custom maps from Maps subfolder.
2. Move all maps from Maps subfolder to another location, start the game (with empty Maps subfolder), quit the game and move maps back.

IIRC the number of maps should not exceed 200.

I have more like 2000. Main menu takes a moment to load, but nonetheless  it works.

Thanks for the help, I'll try that.

As it happens I am using Windows 7 but I didn't pension my old XP machine off so I copied a save game over and am still playing. What a tiny screen - and I thought that was so sweet when I bought it.

I am lucky enough to have a computer and laptop with Windows XP. Absolutely no problems with HoMM 1-4 Windows versions. And fortunately I do not have the possibility to test the game with Windows Vista/7 crap.

Don't you dare compare windows 7 to Vista!! It seems vista was only made to make windows 7 seem awsome compared to it.

Oh okay. Never mind then.

Btw. calling it windows millenium activates the feeling of recognizing, though I'm not certain if it's because it was what we had after 98 or if it was because of something else.

I think the problem lies in the use of the function GetDiskFreeSpaceA which give's wrong information about the free disk space. If you 'shake' a bit the files on your disk to alter the free disk space as seen by Heroes3.exe you don't hit the bug in the use GetDiskFreeSpace. So the solution of removing some map's in the map folder works just because it alters the free space.
In my case I have copied/pasted a big file in my disk and the problem dissapeared.

i dont remember exactly but when it does that you take out your games or maps folder out of the heroes 3 folder, you run the game once and then you put the folder back in and it's gone.

I have had this problem many times, but early on I managed to figure out what the issue was, and it is easily solvable.

When the game was made, they didn't seem to allow for the increase in hard drive size that everybody now has.  As a result, the game doesn't recognise a clean Gigabyte measurement of free space.

To explain a bit clearer: if you have exactly 10 gigabytes of space free on your drive, the game will say "you need at least 5mb of space free", cos it doesn't see the 10 gig, it only sees the '000' mb after the 10 and thinks you've got nothing left.  So, if you add or subtract any amount you like from the 10 gigabytes, and for examples sake let's say you add a 100 megabyte file to your drive, then your drive will read only 9.9 Gb free, and the game will be satisfied.  It will read the .9 Gb, or 900 mb and be happy.

Does that make sense?  I've had this issue about 6 times now, and a simple adjustment of the available hard drive space fixed the problem instantly every time.

I don't know why but you must delete one a map. If workn't you delete more one a map again. Maybe about 5mb. If not work, try other files. Too long time ago, not only Heroes.

That sounds like the problem alright because I haven't had it again. I'll know what to do next time it happens. Thanks.
